Love the new homepage. I never spent much time on the old page since I would always quickly navigate to contacts, groups or photos. The added information and photos is the perfect amount to see what is new since I last logged in.

After some playing around on the new homepage, I guess I like it and the options it offers. But I also have an issue with this "recent activity" thing: On the old homepage, I saw, when I had new comments, now I have to go and look. I usually don't check recent activity, if there are no new comments on my pictures.

Apart from that: Thumbs up! :-)

Ugh. Too cluttered, too "lefty" (I preferred photos on the right, weird brain thing), I really dislike not having the separate "Comment You've made" and "Recent Activity" pages, I dislike the scant feel of some of the pages, and I dislike the slow loading times.

I agree with Shadow Viking
I'm currently using a ten year old computer, and the load times are even worse for me.

As time goes by, my like of it has increased- except for the combination Recent Activity and Comments You've Made mode. I still find this irredeemably stupid.

If there's just a way to stay on the old style home page permanently, I'll be totally happy. I don't understand why the new version can't be an option instead of a change.

I like new home page a lot. Congratulations for such a improvement.
I have one think that likes in the old one better and it is a recent activity page.

On the "recent activity" under the my photo stream should reach to the activities around my photo stream and not from the entire community or group that I belong to.

The new "recent activity" page is interesting and good way to discover good photos but it should be under the more corresponding header.

If the new one show from entire community, it should under the EXPLORE, if it is from my contacts, it's under the "Your Contact" and so on.

Check the links in the thread opener - one is to go back to the non-beta version of the home page. (I would hardly expect the old one to be preserved as an option once this one is out of beta, though! I don't know *any* major websites that have done that.)

Adding another request to please separate the Recent Activity into 2 choices the way it was before, having either option viewable from the same page with just one click. I realize I can change the settings for only one or the other to show, but to have to change options and resave anytime I want to change views is just silly and time-consuming. I'm not a fan of the muddled Recent Activity soup that gets served me when I have both options ticked now.
Love the mute function, though.

My one (ok - two) complaint is the fact that you can't toggle between comments on my photos, and comments I have made easily. It's hidden in the activity settings which I don't want to have to go into every single day. Oh, and the "NEW" icon beside activity would be neat as well...

Adding my voice to the other requests to please separate out the recent activity between those comments left on my photos and comments left on photos I commented on. As someone said earlier in this thread, sometimes my time is limited & I don't like having to sift through all the images. I know I can change the preferences but I don't want to have to toggle back and forth. I do like to see the comments after I commented, but separated.

I also really miss the yellow "new" icon!

I can deal with the rest of the changes & do the like the addition of the recent group photos. Also love the ability to mute comment activity on individual photos.

I really like the new design but it would be great with some additional features :
- better use screen width (I'm using 1280x1024 screen) if it is available. There is a lot of lost space in the default screen, which could be use to display more photos
-it would be nice to be able to reorganise the default layout, move blocks around (just like Netvibes) : for instance, "Explore" is not visible after loading the page (because of too much content before) but the right column is full of free space : I would prefer to have Explore there.

In the beta home page, if you *don't* have new activity, it will say so. Otherwise you see a link to the new activity.

That said, it seems oddly inconsistent (at the moment) to have the yellow flag for new photos from contacts but not for new other things.

Looks good but my only complaint is why as a homepage are you still using a narrow column in the middle of the screen. The very stuff designed to make me explore more - i.e. links to Groups I might not have checked and the final thing promoting new groups or explore is pushed beyond the page fold.

Why not make the homepage at least, a little wider. I bet if you look at your analytics you'll see the majority of people are using wider screen resolutions now. Make use of the extra space.

fraying  Pro User  says:

An amazing improvement. Good job Team Flickr!

A few nits and suggestions:

* Design/Interaction Nit: There's a interaction design collision between the pink "»" characters before the subheadings that have no functional value, and the disclosure triangles right below them that do. The effect is that it makes my eye ping-pong all over the place. Suggestion: Lose the distracting pink "»" characters. They don't do anything, and they confuse the functionality of the page.

* Personalization Nit: I really don't want a sparkline for my stats. I may be weird here, and I surely am, but I don't follow my Flickr stats, and I don't want to be reminded of them. It creates a gaming mentality that I find destructive to the community experience. Flickr allows me to customize so much of the new homepage. Let me turn the stats sparkline off, please.

* Groups Nit: Correct me if I'm wrong here, but it seems like the group that appears on my homepage is randomly picked from the groups I belong to. Random is okay for Explore and Tips, but I think Groups should be different, because we all have some groups we care about more than others. For example, I'd like to see an overview of the groups I admin or moderate. Doing this would help remind group creators to tend their groups. Suggestion: Instead of showing 5 recent photos from a random group, show me 5 groups I belong to, in order of most recently updated. Bonus Suggestion: Overlay the Admin or Moderator icon on groups I admin or moderate.

* Iconography Nit: The new Activity page is AMAZING. I love it. So this is a small nit, but nits are nits, so here goes. The icon for "mute" is unrecognizable. Then, once I recognized it as an eyeball, it's confusing, because the text is "mute" but it's an eyeball. Suggestion: Change the text to "hide" instead of "mute".

Rock on!

First impression? Love it. :] There's definitely still things that could be tweaked but, overall, I'm a fan.

Not sure anyone cares, but here my opinion on what a heard a lot of people saying:

'It's too cluttered and confusing':
I really don't think it is. It's confusing at first because it's different then what I was used to, but if you look at it, it really hasn't changed that much besides a new order of things- it's still very much like the old Flickr.

'I don't like the shift from the right side':
Ha, that threw me off at first. All in all, I think it's better on the left side. Weird to look at first, but it almost seems more natural that way. Like reading a book- you start from the left side...

'Merging of "recent comments" and "comments you've made"'
Yeah, I'm going to have to throw my hat in with everyone else and say I would REALLY like it if they were separated similar to before.

Me likey. But... (surely you were expecting that)

I agree with what someone said earlier having to scroll down is a shame - the compact single screen layout before was nice.
There's a big blank space on my new homepage below the blog link on the right. If it was me I'd have put the "Explore" stuff there, then it would all fit , unless the twisties were deployed. Or is that reserved for advertising for non-paying members?

That's probably my only gripe. On the whole it's a nice refresh. I am particularly impressed with the little mini stats graph - I thought it was just a generic icon at first, but then looked closer. Very cool.

s5xxx says:

My overall impression is that the home page is fine for people who just started using the site, and basically useless for people who have been using it for a while.

Why is so much functionality hidden and buried? Why not do what every modern web site does, and offer a customizable home page (like iGoogle or even sfgate.com)? I would love to have a "recent comments" box on my home page, and I would love to always have the "Explore / Places" box, without having to click the cycle button ten times until I find what I want. I should be able to rearrange the boxes on my home page, and close the boxes I'm tired of and add new boxes that will keep me updated on the content I'm interested in on Flickr.

Instead of doing this, you guys took away functionality, by mixing in the comments you leave and the comments other people leave on your photos. This makes zero sense, and should win an award as the most insane UI decision of the year. Checking comments that other people leave on your photos is a completely different use case than following up on comments you've left on other people's photos. Yes, you can change this in your settings, but, why? You have to change your settings each time in order to filter your "activity". I can only assume that the person who made this decision did so to remove the number of links on the home page so it would be "cleaner", without regard for whether or not it would be useful to anyone.

The "cycle" button in the "Explore" and "Share what you know" boxes really says it all to me. Instead of doing something smart and allowing the user to customize their home page (and provide some very basic defaults so new users aren't left confused), you took functionality and hid it behind a button that you have to keep clicking until you can find what you want.

And my final criticism, why can't I page through thumbnails in my "Your Contacts" box? I still have to click through and load the full page.

This is a home page for a site made in 2003, not 2008. Truly a step backwards. Yes, it appears less cluttered, but the UI is convoluted with functionality intentionally taken away, with no options to customize your page.

Or put more simply, FAIL.

I like it for the most part.

However the recently activity part is kinda sketchy. I liked being able to choose between seeing comments on my photos and comments I've left for others.

It's also kinda of strange to have so much open space on the left now and all the ads on the right...

@Philippe and Angie: isn't that the feature you refer?

You can still find those.
Refresh the Explore section, and Everyone's photos will show up.

I rather like it as well. At first I thought: "Oh, dear. This is going to drive me bonkers." But I nearly always think that. About everything.

Then I started playing around. Cool. Good job, folks! :-)

my account reverted to free status recently and I was prompted whether I wanted to enable stats or not, thought that was only for pro members

It was fine the way it was. Please use the Kiss principle as you continue to tweak this or at least give Flickr users more option to customize their own page.

Generally, I like the new home page. My only complaint is that there seems to be a lot of dead space down the right side.

I absolutely loved the intro while the new page was loading for the first time. Listening to The Girl From Ipanema in old-skool midi was the high point of my day.

Another complementation: the little yellow box on the left of your recent comments, was maybe the coolest function on flickr, and it was just as satisfying to see it than to actually read the comments itself.

It was so nice to open the home page, knowing right away that someone commented on your photostream without reading the content. Clicking that link was as rewarding as opening a real gift box.

Really geek, I know...but I got really used to it. And it wasn't so confusing as the new layout! Thanks!!!!

Weird. Now I'm seeing Yellow New in Recent Activity, but how do you turn it off? The www.flickr.com/?clear=1 trick doesn't work any more.

I LIKE IT, much of an enhancement, contrary to "some other web 2.0" service changing layout in a short time :)

@Zack Sheppard. It seems to be working now. When I go to www.flickr.com/groups/ it correctly shows a group with a pending photo.

The "Pending" link just takes me to flickr.com/groups/

Yup - my gut says it should take me to a list of only those groups that have pending photos.

I'd prefer that too. I expected that, not my normal groups page.

hooray! great work, flickr. the music, of course, is the best part.

i DO like that activity on my photos and "comments you've made" are lumped together, but perhaps there is some way to differentiate them? perhaps comments on my photos are hilighted or in an ever-so-slightly grey box?

The new home page is great, but I miss the separation between recent activity on my photos and comments I've made.

I agree with wanting my own and other's comments separated as it gets confusing, and I have to manually change it just view one or the other.
