I've found a camera

IrenicRhonda  Pro User  says:

Hi

I found a camera, 2 months ago, which I handed in to the police. It's not been claimed so they've now given it to me. It's a nice camera and I cetainly don't mind keeping it but I wondered if there is a way I could post one or 2 of the photos of people to see if someone recognises them.

I don't think the camera is of terrific value but the photos seem to be first of a stag night and then quite an extensive European holiday , so I though they might be the honeymoon.

There's not really anything stopping you from posting the photos (and it's so kind of you to consider it), but the chances of them ever seeing them are terribly remote...

Still, you never know - someone might recognise them, stranger things have happened!!

you should watch this film short:

and then hunker down to some serious detective work. :)

@wdslentz, thanks I've done that now

@sgoralnick
lol. From the photos I think the owner might be from the Stonehaven area so I've taken your hint and e-mailed the local paper.

I think after that I'll have done my best.

I don’t know if Olympus has a way to know who owns their cameras (I mean through serial numbers)? On the other hand, I would expect from the police that they do such a check in this case.

Ha, really - you think? My guess is they stuffed it in a box under the desk for the requisite amount of time, then returned it to the finder :-)

Every jurisdiction I know of has computer access to 'stolen goods' databases. They'd look good if they could recover stolen property. I suspect that ran the serial number against that database, and THEN put it in the lost and found box.

I don’t think that the photos are from one extensive European holiday—there are too big gaps in between. There are 164 photos taken on September 14th/15th in Rome, 18 taken on October 6th in a rural place, 41 on November 18th/22nd/23rd in a place that might be the owner's home, 112 on December 12th–15th in Belgium (Brussels/Bruges), 35 around Christmas in a private place again, 19 on New Year’s Eve probably in Stonehaven, 16 on March 23rd/24th in the street (maybe in front of their home), 19 on April 18th near some ruins that I don’t recognize, and finally 120 from a Pentecost trip in some rural area.

You might try your local craigslist, too.

The Searcher  Pro User  says:

Or try the local Craigslists for some of the areas the photos were taken. It's possible people at some of the events might recognize the photos, not just the owners, and help make the connection.

Thanks for all suggestions, Ill follow them all up.I don't know what a Caig list is, but I'll look into it.
And I contacted Olympus even if the police didn't.

Technically, you *Can't* post them on Flickr, since you didn't take them.

For what it's worth.

The Searcher  Pro User  says:

www.craigslist.org

it's a global bulletin board / classifieds site, where people post about anything, like things for sale, things for trade, hey I saw you, etc. There's an extensive "lost and found" section, and it goes by country and even by city, depending on the sizes. It's the "google" of classifieds.

Mike: I think in this case, Flickr wouldn't have a problem with this use for posting photos. Besides technically, this person possesses the camera and the memory card, so the only other people that could possibly claim ownership, are the people she's trying to reach in the first place.

I've just heard a number of cases where the reason for posting made perfect sense to me, and they got deleted anyway.

The Searcher  Pro User  says:

I haven't.

Besides, accounts aren't generally deleted if you have some photos in ownership dispute. An entire account might be an issue. But when someone files an NOI, which is the only way Flickr would be aware there was an ownership dispute, the procedure is to remove that image from the stream, not delete the account.

And again, the only people who are in a position to claim ownership, are the people she's TRYING to contact in the first place. Flickr does not in my experience, punish people for being good samaritans. And in fact this is the sort of thing that the power of Flickr is well suited for.

(Has the Help Forum now turned into Flickr Central? Everytime I check in here, there's some thread that has nothing what so ever to do with how flickr works or runs, chugging merrily along. Did I miss a policy change?)

The Searcher  Pro User  says:

I don't think so. But I think a query for something detectivy and interesting, that's purpose is to help people, is worth responding to. And technically, the OP was asking if it's ok to post some of the photos here on Flickr, which is a policy question and valid for the help forum.

It's possible when people have absolutely no interest in a particular topic, yet choose to comment in it anyway, that continues the cycle of non-help topics in this forum. Maybe someone could start a help thread about that, how to not comment in a thread they don't care about nor want to see.

Is it possible in the UK to use number plates like in this one

to find out where the car owners live? Because if two of three of the cars in those photos seem to belong to the same street, this might well be the place where the photos were taken. And it looks to me as if this were just outside the camera owners’ home.

Patrick Costello  Pro User  says:

What you are quoting is the issuing centre. As cars get sold on, particularly by dealers, it's not unusual to find them owned by people in different parts of the country. My last car originated in Chester whereas I live in Hampshire. So the registered addresses might well provide a clue - that data is stored by the DVLA.
However, access to the DVLA database isn't readily available. That's not to say you can't get access, but you usually need some sort of official justification, like a local authority tracing a car for parking offences etc.

Johnny ©ontax says:

I am aware of this which was my point, unless there were a series of cars bearing similar area related plates, this is a no goer.
As regards getting the info from DVLC, not a snowballs chance in hell. even when I was in the police every index trace had to be justified and accountable..

Posting those photos in Birmingham and Chelmsford groups might get people who recognize the street to comment and help you track down the owner.

I posted in the Birmingham and Cheltenham groups as suggested by John and Coleen above. Capo2 (Birmingham Group) then posted a link in the Aberdeen group as that was where he thought the area was. The Scotland group then took up the cause. First of all people recognised the road and eventually down to the probable house number. They are mainly rented flats. Someone else then found a planning application for replacement windows for that address and following that link I found the landlords name and phone number. I described the couple and their dog to the landlord who thought it sounded like them and passed on my phone number. He then called me. He's a Flickr member himself but hadn't come across any of this.

Those people who worry about such things might equally be alarmed that based on a few pictures, such as those you might post on your photostream, a determined enough person can track down your address. Something to consider before joining in a flame war with anyone who's mental state can't be vouched for?

The Searcher  Pro User  says:

Sure, sort of. Unlike a stalker or similar, this effort took considerable teamwork from a large group of people all over the world. Sure it might be possible to "con" people into helping with an effort like this, but I suspect that it would be difficult to pull off without alarm bells going off for some people ("hi, I'm trying to track down this cute girl in the red bikini. I'm her.. uncle, yes her uncle, and I lost her address. Can anyone help me find her from these 326 photos of her I happen to have?")
