DVDs ... again
|
|
So, QOOP is out of business; Snapfish's CD/DVD service is very spotty (and doesn't include full-resolution images, and cuts off titles and descriptions and metadata, etc).
All the previous suggestions in the help forum are pretty outdated.
Since Yahoo doesn't seem to be jumping in to revitalize Flickr, and things are just sort of coasting downhill here, I'm thinking I need to get a full DVD backup of all my photos and videos just in case.
But it looks like none of the current partners allow this.
Now, just before Yahoo took over, they said this would be something that would always be available, but I'm having trouble figuring out how. Any suggestions?
I have about 9800 photographs & videos, going back to 2001.

Why not just DIY? Buy a pack of DVDs and copy from your computer.

Have you considered Flick and Share? It may work for you.

Hairlover, will try.
Lú, because clicking on each image, then clicking through to full resolution and downloading can take as long as 20 seconds per image. That means more than 50 hours of work.
And since both Yahoo and the founders of Flickr said that you would never have your images be "held for ransom" and that you would always be able to get your images off in a full-resolution digital form easily, I'd prefer to just hold them to their words.
I'm certainly willing to pay for it. After all, it can't cost more than the many years of pro service (and all the pro account gifts I've given), can it?

I suggested DIY because I assume that people don't make an online photosharing service where they keep their only copy of their work. It's far too good a recipe for losing everything. All it takes is one person to hack your account, and you have no more photos. Please consider using a third-party batch downloader to download all your stuff, then keep it multiple places.

But that's not what Lú_ suggested. She suggested buying the DVDs yourself and making the backups from the copies that you already have on your computer.
That way, there's no need to download any of your photos from Flickr at all.

Yes, I agree. But I don't have backups of some of those images - and many that I have aren't the full-resolution images. Yes, my fault for not being able to afford a backup HD etc when I should have bought one, and now that I can it's too late.
I agree 100%.
But the fact remains: this is something we had access to; it is something that we were told we'd always have access to; there must be a way to access it now, but I just can't figure out how.

Please re-read the second reply above for a suggestion.

@kmacgray i think my sets are too large or the images are; the java on the page is crashing every time i try it, and on every set.
I will gratefully use that (wonderful looking!) tool if I can get it to work. I'll try from a non-Mac and see if that works better.

"But I don't have backups of some of those images"
Do you mean you don't have any copies of those images? (A "backup" refers to the 2nd copy, 3rd copy, etc.)
If so, hopefully FlickandShare will work for you (I've tested it successfully in the past). When it does work for you, then you'll have one copy of each image on your hard drive. Once you make the DVD copies, that'll be the backup (second copy).
Good luck.
At least you caught this now while you still only have a few thousand images on Flickr.
Even if it takes a long time and a lot of hard work, I'd still advise making this your top priority (not in life, but regarding your photos). If the files are important to you, it's worth it.

Thank you.
Will there be an official staff response to this, or a followup to the Yahoo promise to make folks' photographs available digitally?

Your photos are available digitally - they're on Flickr in their original form. As you're a pro account user you have access to them whenever you want and can download them.
I'm curious as to why you want staff to respond? You have access to your photos, no promise has been broken. If you don't keep a backup then that's not really Flickr's fault.

I hope that everyone reading this now realizes how important backups and off-line copies are!
In addition to the above, also look at BulkR [professional]

I guess I'll echo the others' thoughts. What kind of response are you expecting from staff? Sorry to be blunt, but the fact that you don't have a backup / local copies of your stuff is not Flickr's problem, it's yours.
As for making your images "available digitally", you currently have downloading enabled on your photostream, so all of your images are quite available.

If a particular third-party tool is not working for you, consult that tool's developer. That person will know things like what systems are supported, etc. Flickr can't help you use third-party tools.

When Stewart (Butterfield) originally addressed this, he said "you'll always be able to get your photos on DVD or CD" or something to that effect - I'm sure I can dig up the exact quote, but it was in response to whether or not people would be able to get an archive of their images to make them portable from Flickr, or would they have to go through a painstaking download process to download them individually.
At the time, Flickr had partners who provided these "third party tools," and as part of that relationship offered support for them as well. This was prior to the purchase by Yahoo, which apparently invalidated several of these relationships and promises, from what I have been told by Flickr staff outside of this thread.
