Third-party image blocking -- back on topic

judy_and_ed says:

i know i'm swimming upstream when i say this breaks a lot of my comments, so i won't pursue that. but might it be possible to increase the size of the downsized remorte images a bit?

this one isn't even showing as a remote thread here:
html omitted here --> ross-park.net/flickr_shortcuts/serstakur_one.html
but can be found in a comment here:
www.flickr.com/photos/sl_6x6/7481892640/

i would like to be the same width as the original:
333.

Flickr doesn't control the size of the image. Whomever wrote the code (that particular group's admin, most likely) that displays it does. You'll need to ask them to change it if you want to see it larger.

The code on your group page has sizing tags:

width="150" height="84"

It's simple to adjust those.

That image is actually smaller than what's appearing here. The sizing tags that Patrick mentions are enlarging it.

The actual image is 100x56:

The original is 4500x2500. Far too large to display in comments.

How about a compromise?

thanks for comments. attempting to clarify, flickr is doing some resizing of my third-party image (ross-park.net/flickr_shortcuts/serstakur_one.html). the original image is 150x22, and the size tags say the same. yet when it is loaded in flickr comments, it is downsized to 100x22 -- please see screenshot below.

no idea why 100 wide; i find on inspecting related flickr css a reference to "img.maximum_width=500". or some such.

Why not use the Flickr version like everyone else?

judy_and_ed says:

yes, of course. that's what i will do. sometimes i get too wrapped up in keeping the internet tidy -- hence the misguided attempt to put the record on flickr resizing straight. who cares, when there's a convenient work-around?

well, maybe i care a little; fixing resizing would let me not fix already posted comments.

No image posted in a discussion thread is allowed to be more than 500 pixels wide, as that would break the page layout, hence img.maximum_width=500

visp says:

Interesting. It appears that the external image blocking code strips away any dimensions supplied in the embed code, thereby always showing the picture at its native resolution (unless it gets down-sized by the notsowide class). Images hosted on Flickr on the other hand can be scaled any which way by supplying width/height attributes.
Bug or intentional?

judy_and_ed says:

i suspect bug. it appears that flickr wants to limit external images to no more than 500 pixel width, yet they are reducing my 150 pixel wide (native rec and html tags) to 100 pixel width. :-(

edited after the next three comments were posted: probably not a bug. it seems flickr's intention is to limit size of any image posted in comments to 500 pixels wide, and also to prohibit the re-sizing of third-party images using img attributes. thanks to vise and patrick costello for this clarification.

visp says:

, the native resolution of the image you referred to is 100x22px, so they're not resizing it, they're just not letting you resize it using attributes in the img element.

Flickr limits EVERY photo in a discussion thread to 500 width, regardless of where it is hosted.

judy_and_ed says:

visp -- thanks, i concur. and i note that prohibiting resizing using attributes is new. (don't now know how the native res got to be 100 x 22 -- too much fooling around trying to understand this, i suspect.)

thanks for all your help, i believe that visp's and patrick costello's last comments sum up what we have learned.

Now my profile looks awful, with lots of icons like this one:

img854.imageshack.us/img854/4161/flickrimagenesnoautoriz.jpg

www.flickr.com/people/beatriz_molina/
You have to click on each of these icons for to see them all. :(

And they are only safe images from flags or logos, just for to link to my profile in other SAFE webs like FilmAffinity, Lastfm...

Not cool at all.

The Searcher says:

Those appear to be a bunch of tiny flags (you know those icons are clickable, then anyone can see the images, right?)

Why can't you just upload those tiny flags to your photostream? You could set them to "private", but then they'd still display on your profile just like the other ones did.

Hi!

Yes, I know you can view all of them by clicking this icon (read my other post ;) )... but it's annoying, isn't?

About your suggestion of to upload them to my stream and make them private: I have a first Flickr account where I usually did this, but (without naming other reasons) I opened this second account just for to have a "clean" stream, and also because when you're not more Pro, ALL pictures count on your stream for to reach the 200 free (even the private ones), so...... as I said, not cool at all.

But thanks for your input and ideas, very much appreciated.

"ALL pictures count on your stream for to reach the 200 free"

Just change the date so it's beyond the most recent 200. You can still display on your profile. Old pictures are only hidden from your photostream view.

Mmmmm... I've already tried to upload these images on my old, and first, Flickr account and tried to copy the private link to this one.
It worked (and I thought you only could do this with "the account you're working on", don't know if I express myself well), so thanks to both. :)

But... I don't wanna be boring, but some of my external images where from safe sites and I can't get them because they're part of an external code.
Examples:
* The link to my LastFM profile was made with a widget taken copied from here: www.last.fm/tools/charts?setlang=en
* And the external image from Flagcounter doesn't work neither: s07.flagcounter.com/more/LeQ

So....
what to do?

Advice, please.... Thank you.

Just come to terms with it. Either that people are going to have to click through, or that you won't be ablt to use these widgets on your Flickr profile page. You can always replace the graphics with plain text links to things like your last.fm profile.

Still loving much more Flickr when this didn't happen.
