Just as a reminder, keyboard shortcuts don't work on all browsers. If you use IE6 or IE7, they will not be enabled, and pressing the ? key won't do anything.
If this applies to you, we highly recommend upgrading to Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or IE9.

tivac - Yes, unfortunately the shortcuts we've implemented sometimes override the built-in browser shortcuts. If this is a problem for you, you can disable keyboard shortcuts on Flickr by pressing the ? key and unchecking the checkbox at the top that says "Enable Keyboard Shortcuts".
Sorry for the inconvenience!

thomas.armstrong & RayPG 2.0 - I'm glad you two mentioned that! We have support for different keyboard layouts waiting in the wings, and we just need to do a bit more testing before we turn it on.
Sorry that it doesn't work for you now, but we'll have support for the Spanish keyboard (and others) soon!
If the ? key doesn't work for you, try going to a photo page and clicking on the text at the bottom of the page that says "? show all shortcuts".

Just to note: In Firefox, it's actually the "/" key that brings up the keyboard shortcut list. If I actually use the question mark ("?"), it simply hides my browser's status bar, but has no effect on Flickr.

Hairlover - If you've disabled keyboard shortcuts in the past (with this account setting page), or if you're using a browser that we don't support keyboard shortcuts on, then the list of shortcuts won't appear at the bottom of the photo page.

Using the ?-button without shift creates a ß on German keyboards.

I'm loving the new keyboard shortcuts. Just one question - having used a shortcut to pull up, e.g., add to group, I still have to use the pointer to complete the action. Is there any way you can introduce a shortcut so that hitting Enter will complete the action? That would make the whole thing perfect!

Just tried it and it is FAB!
Just one suggestion to make it absolutely tip-top super -
WHY NOT HAVE a 'Home' and a 'You' shortcut too? - as these are likely to be the two main 'resting' pages for most peoples' Flickr sessions. Certainly, having upsized my contacts thumbnails an instant 'Home' shortcut would've saved me a bit of faff looking for/trying to remember the scroll up command so I could go 'Home' manually.

You are correct that the shortcuts aren't new. Just the one key that opens up the "guide" to the shortcuts.
For almost a year, I've been using this list as my guide, and updating it occasionally.

Karen_Chappell - Thanks for the bug reports!
I've tested the maps in IE9, and there is indeed an issue. We'll look into it immediately.
The keyboard shortcuts and the new guide both work fine for me in IE9 (in Standards Mode and in Quirks Mode). You might want to check this account settings page to see if you have shortcuts disabled.

I love, love, love these shortcuts - thanks sooo much!
I want more now - please help prevent me from getting carpal tunnel syndrome by having to use the mouse to click in order to have a workflow for downloading a Large or Original photo. It would be soooo awesome if there was a D (Download), L (Large), O (Original) workflow using shortcuts.
For now, I've been using the F to Favorite something, then viewing Favorites, using L to Lightbox, then having to click Show All Sizes, then wait, then when it loads, click Download the Large Size, then hit Backspace to go back to the Lightbox, then right arrow to go to the next photo, and then repeat that for each one I want to download. Then, I have to go look at each of my Favorites one at a time and hit F again to remove them from Favorites.
Please make this easier!! It drives me nuts.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
WTF with the ? that doesn't require the shift key?
Once you have learnt what the shortcuts are (or the subset you use) you no longer need to keep referring to it. The '/' in FF has been there for years, we are all used to using it. It is how the browser works. This extension breaks browser behaviour.
And yes I've seen the response by Ross above and the solution of not using shortcuts at all is just wrong.

In German layout its the underscore _ and minus key - next to right shift to bring up the keymap help its the same position where in the US keymap the questionmark is. Maybe for other languages its the same :)
(I'm guessing Flickr uses the scancodes of the keyboard to implement the shortcuts)

Walwyn - Unlike other browsers, Firefox does not give us the ability to distinguish between the / keystroke and the shift-/ keystrokes.
In JavaScript, which we use to implement these shortcuts, shift-/ returns zero information in Firefox about what key was pressed. If we had this information, we could have implemented it as you described, and left the / intact.

cnmark and Andreas. - Thanks for the feedback. As Andreas. suggests, we do in fact use JavaScript keycodes to implement these shortcuts.
We should have an update out in the near future that adds support to the Keyboard Shortcut Guide for widely used keyboard layouts, like QWERTZ (German), AZERTY (French), and Spanish. You will then be able to look at the Guide and see what keys map to what functions on the site. In the meantime, sorry for the confusion!

I love the keyboard shortcuts. I want them more. For instance, L to start lightshow even from any photostream page and not limited to a specific photo page. With a Norwegian keyboard layout the key to press is the one containing the symbols * and ' (next to Enter).
But this does not work in the Opera browser at all.
Also, Opera uses symbols like + (same button as ? in Norway) and * for zooming.
The feature is very nice, so it would be very useful if you could add an alternative key on a plain letter - it would probably help many of us with different keyboards and browsers. Less easy to remember, yes, but better than something not working!

Hi all!
We've updated the keyboard shortcuts with options for other keyboards. Keyboards now available are QWERTY (the most common), Spanish, QWERTZ (primarily German), AZERTY (primarily french), and Dvorak.
To change the layout just open up the guide with the '?' key and you will see an option to change it on the left.

Indeed. The deliberately clumsy QWERTY arrangement slowed down a typist's speed, which helped to prevent the primitive mechanical typewriters of the day from jamming. Dvorak reassigns the most used keys to the strongest fingers, increasing speed. Yet, QWERTY works better than Dvorak on computers, because most of the typing is done by the left hand, leaving the right hand more time to move the mouse.
