[Official Topic] New Share Menu: Bugs

Flickr Staff

Zack Sheppard says:

For a full list of the changes to the share menu and sharing settings please see this FAQ.

Please also note the browser requirements are Firefox (3.5 or newer), Safari (version 4 or newer), Chrome (most recent version). For PCs we also recommend the most recent version of Internet Explorer.

If you’ve encountered a bug with the new Share menu or settings then this Help Forum Topic is for you. There is a separate thread for feedback.

If you are having trouble setting up the connection to your Facebook account there is a separate thread for that. Please let us know here.

Unless I'm misunderstanding the new FAQ, I think there is a HUGE bug. I've chosen here: www.flickr.com/account/prefs/sharing?from=privacy to disallow sharing.

However, anyone, flickr account or not can share my photos via email. Under the old "share this" you could disable this feature.

This is a huge bug, and is actually the first time I've ever considered deleting my account.

Is there any way to disabling sharing via email (yes, I understand that as long as my photos are public, theoretically, anyone can copy and paste the address of my photo into an email). I'd like to know if this is a bug, oversight or unfortunate new feature.

(This is a design flaw and not a bug - so I've added it to the feedback thread.)

Ross says:

I'm sorry that some pages no longer work on Opera. In order to work most efficiently for our users, we have to limit what browsers we support; that's just the reality of modern web development. We have made the decision to not support Opera, due to the fact that it has a lot of non-standard rendering behaviors and is used by such a small percentage of Flickr members. This means that new features may not work, and that the site in general might even stop working.

I recommend downloading the latest version of Chrome, Safari, or Firefox instead.

Inconsistency (perhaps by design? I think I can imagine why):

- On the photo page, the "share this" icons are followed on the right by a button labeled "[down arrow]".

- On, say, a set page, the "share this" icons are followed on the right by a button labeled "More [down arrow]".

Andrew T... says:

The site's "browser support" policies are completely arbitrary. If the layout were designed within constraints (and the staff didn't use the "support" list as a weapon to deprecate platforms and an excuse to break anything not explicitly listed), it would work on just about any post-2002 browser. If Flickr was only interested in developing for a Browser War-era "big two" hegemony, they wouldn't be supporting Chrome and Safari.

Ironically, Flickr is the chief reason why I switched to Opera in the first place. When the photo page redesign fiasco unfolded several months ago, Flickr was rendered utterly unusable on Firefox 1.5-2 and their SeaMonkey equivalents. Opera was the only sub-Win2000/XP compatible browser that offered full functionality on the site.

Just like most large graphics heavy sites. Do you have some examples of others that do this currently? I tried using CNN on IE 6 recently and my computer near-exploded. Of course it's possible to cater to every aged browser out there, but there will always have to be compromises based on staff/budget and the kinds of things you want the site to do. It's not arbitrary, it's cost+time+features.

The Searcher says:

On issue: according tot he FAQ, there is no turning off email sharing, but the reasoning seems flawed:

"Email and Grab the link are always available. Because this only lets people share the photo page URL which is available anyway, these are always available and no longer controlled by the Share setting."

However this is not what share-by-email does. It includes a hotlink that displays the image in the body of the email, stripped of the invisible gif-overlay, and letting me right-click-save it anywhere I want. Considering the functions of sharing to Facebook and Twitter and Blogger allow for the same thing, it makes sense that share-by-email should be included in the functions that users can turn off.

OR, make the share-by-email ACTUALLY only send a link to the photo page. Or make that the function if people have turned sharing off.

Following up on a previous comment by elementalPaul, here are my observations:

- Safari 5.0.4, Mac OS X 10.6.7.

- When loading www.flickr.com/photos/kitby/ , if the mouse cursor happens to be over the down arrow for the "You" menu when the page loads, the "You" menu will briefly open and the close. I can't tell exactly when in the page load process this happens.

- Similar behavior for www.flickr.com/photos/friends/ and the "Contacts" menu.

EDIT: Actually, maybe the behavior is observable if the mouse is hovering over any portion of the menu, i.e., the "You" or "Contacts" text.

kitby: That is a CSS-only :hover effect, doing its thing before the JavaScript kicks in. We may be able to improve the priority of loading on that, but the idea is to have the navigation still usable in the event that JS fails to load.

That change was introduced with the photo.gne design last year, but it is starting to be used in other areas of the site as well.

"The change you made is not supported by any number of browsers according to the complaints I'm reading here." But this is a complaint forum, so you're never going to read the non-complaints from the majority of people who are having no trouble.

Of course this is about revenue generating, but not the way you're thinking. If more users use the site, and use those other sites, then that's more traffic that comes here. What's wrong with basing new features on business decisions that could actually make the site money? Or staying competitive with other photo services (like Instamatic) that easily do these things already?

Sometimes if I hover over the big white box, the options will appear. Only sometimes, or I couldn't have grabbed the html for that screenshot. It took a few tries. Then, if I'm lucky enough to have the options appear, they won't go away. Click the drop down arrow again to close, and get this....

Fair enough. To be clear, what I find (slightly) distracting or weird is the "flashing" behavior, or maybe more precisely, the fact that the menu disappears without me having to do anything. If the menu happens to start visible because my mouse happens to be hovering over it, that by itself is fine.

Anyway, this is likely not a big problem in the grand scheme of things. (-:

@: have a feeling that this would have had a fair bit of regression testing across supported browsers. That said, Flickr can't control:
- proxy caching of files
- router caching of files
- browser caching of files
all of which can impact how you see the page. Furthermore, plugins & userscripts (eg: Greasemonkey) can all have negative impacts on the operation of the page - and these are, again, outside of the control of Flickr.

@: actually they align to Y!'s graded browser support levels. Take aim at Y! not Flickr.

@: re the "flash" - I'll take a punt that this is for progressive enhancement as a design methodology. It leaves when the JS is loaded and takes over (allowing the "click" event on the arrow to trigger the menu - without javascript it'll prevent people from accessing the submenu, so there's a css rule for the :hover pseudo class.

@: who says it *wasn't*? Wrong area - this is bug reporting - take it to the dedicated feedback thread.

LOL at eleventy versions. Still using 7. Hate to move to 8 or 9 because it will inevitably screw something else up.

I don't use Facebook
I don't use Twitter

I DO grab the link - this appears to be working (edited to add that now it DOES NOT WORK)
I DO grab the HTML code. THIS DOES NOT WORK!!!!! I click and nothing happens.

Just a suggestion to you Flickr people, why don't you test your changes before you foist them onto us.

And just for the record though I don't think it can make the slightest difference I am using IE8.
