Flickr extortion or blackmail

Holy cow,
I have not been able to access the pictures that i uploaded to yahoo two years ago and long story short i lost both the other backups that i had. I have only recently been able to get a new computer system up and running and wanted to download my pictures.
I am now told that I need to give them $25 to access what I had uploaded to a FREE service?!?
I am told that my pictures are still there and I can download them, BUT.
PAY US $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

WTF is the world coming too?!?

It's not extortion, it's the way business works. You get so much for free, with some limits, and you pay if you want more. This is all spelled out in the FAQ:
www.flickr.com/help/limits/

To get your old photos back, you have two choices.

1. Pay to upgrade.
2. Delete some content, and the older photos will re-appear.

Please note that if you download anything from your free account, you will not have access to the original size. Again, the FAQ explains this.

Its better than the alternative. Which means, if you'd just let your Yahoo account lapse and they didn't send them anywhere, they'd just be gone.

Don't you think the fact that some nice online company who you have never paid a cent to, but who has managed to preserve the only remaining copies of your precious photographs, is worth bunging a few $$ to?
You see if it was me, I'd be saying Hallelulah - thank you Yahoo! Despite the fact my house burned down, frying my computers, my external drives and my DVDs, I can at least recover my photographs for a measly $25.

I'd try using the double Kilo via Bravo. ;-)

brant82, welcome to flickr. bummer about the unfortunate circumstance. the way it works is that flickr has 2 levels of accounts, a free account with limited features and a paid "pro" account.

when you moved your photos over, flickr generously granted you 3 free months of the paid pro account, so you could try it out and have access to all your photos (this is more than any of us got when we signed up, by the way!). that way if you didn't like the site, you could download all your photos and happily go on your way someplace else. after the 3 month gift expires, you account reverts to a free one which means that only your most recent 200 photos are visible. perhaps staff will be sympathetic to your situation and grant you a magic month of "pro" for a short time so that you may retrieve your photos. a little politeness will go a long way with this though.

you'll be hard-pressed to find ANY photo sharing or photo hosting site out there that is truly free without any limitations. they all have some sort of catch. the totally free hosting site proved to be a bad business model and is now a thing of the past, which is why yahoo photos shut down.

Sorry, this is extortion. I made the stupid mistake of inviting someone to Flickr. They had no reason to buy a Flickr account, but getting one free seemed worth it. Now, they've lost their pictures forever because their free membership ran out. Had they not accepted my invitation, then their pictures would still be available. That's clear extortion.

Free memberships don't "run out" on Flickr. Are you saying that they no longer have their account here at all?

ColleenM  Pro User  says:

A free membership never runs out. Nor are photos deleted from free accounts.

Their older pictures are available if they simply delete some later pictures so that there are only 200 in the account. At that point, all of their images are available.

Are you saying that their account was closed?

Something you may want to consider is the part of the Flickr TOS where it outlines not using your account for commercial purposes.

And also the Community Guidelines prohibits Flickr for commercial use.

It's extortion in the same way that a storage locker is extortion. If you pay rent on a storage locker and put stuff in it, then stop paying, you know what happens?

They hang onto all your stuff. Until you pay what you owe.

I suppose if there weren't any notice or warning or anything, you'd have a case. Except it's explained everywhere, as well as to Yahoo users when the photo site was dying. Some people failed to read these pesky instructions, of course. And some people fail to keep copies/prints of their precious photos.

it's a double shame when both happen at once.

Had either of you actually read any of the terms and conditions before signing up, your friend wouldn't be in this mess now.

That's common sense...

When you invited your friend, what exactly did you say? Did you tell them to load all their pictures on Flickr then destroy every other copy in existence?
If so, then you are a very bad friend.
If you didn't, then it's not your fault if your friend decided to do that. You don't need to feel guilty.

Even I'm (a bit) with brant82 here, I prefer not to help a flamewar start.

brant82: If you are really upset with Flickr, you should just download the 200 photos you have access to, detele them from Flickr and go on downloading and deleting all the rest. I'm pretty sure Yahoo and Flickr lawyers have foreseen these extorsion accusations and have a legal and fair answer to them.

Moreover, remember that you still have access to those inaccesible photos if you have write down their url.

But unless they pay the subscription, they can't get access to the original versions of the images, only the resized Flickr versions.

Times are hard, but c'mon now-- $25?

Believe it or not, hosting, storing, sharing and providing the ability to post your photos costs money.

How would you like to work for free?
