good, another new 'thing', but how about sorting out other stuff first?
Like why when im at my photostream, does it still say in my tab, photos and videos from Austenhaines when i dont have any videos?
This was raised yonks ago in the video thread, but Flickr decide to install something else. I dont care about the new thing, just try and sort out some of the other stuff.
Pretty please.

Not if "all sizes" is not visible. (I checked this :) )
- Where "all sizes" is visible, regardless of the "blog this" setting, "embed this" will embed the medium-sized image with linkback; it does not separately give title or name.
- Where "all sizes" is not visible, "embed this" will give only a link, not an image. The link text is the image title only.

kevin,
i have a question:
Is there a way I can 'hide' my email address from the new 'share this' auto-complete feature?
Much as I love my contacts (and I assume the auto complete only works with reverse contacts?) to share stuff with me, I'd like this only done via flickr mail.
The flickr (and RL friends) who know my email address can of course type it in- but the current auto-complete feature means that if someone types in the first letter, flickr displays my email address for potentially hundreds of sharing contacts.
If possible, i'd prefer not to make this so easy for people.
So, can I hide just my email address (not my flickr username) from auto-completing?

austenhaines Do you think that maybe, just maybe, there were various other things in the pipeline that couldn't be launched until video was rolled out? You want the devs to work on translating "thingummybob" into Korean, do you?

Im sure there are always things in the pipeline like lots of companies, but occasionally companies will realise that there rollouts didnt go quite to plan and can elect to put things on hold to keep things neat and tidy. Just a little disapointed that flickr chose not to.
Off to google "thingummybob" in korean though. :-)

austenhaines: "...how about sorting out other stuff first?"
Different people work on different things. Jude, Kellan, and Adrienne worked on sharing. Others of us are working on video.
Flickr can pat its head and rub its tummy at the same time :o)
(And fixing the issue you mention is one of the video team's priorities.)

(No prob, Kris.) As a group admin anticipating that this is going to be very popularly used for posting to discussion topics, my request for tweaks to this feature would be for an option to embed a smaller sized image (in my largest group, we don't permit medium-sized images in discussion topics after the first post, since some topics are nothing but images), and also for, below the image, a bit of text that gave the name of the image and of the person whose image it is, especially for when someone is embedding someone else's image as a discussion point.

I find it very odd that the "Embed This" and "Blog This" options appear within the Share This menu, even if the photo's creator has turned off All Sizes and blogging. This is in Windows, Firefox 2.0.
Clicking on "Embed This" yields a textarea where I can grab code like this:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/username/123456789/" title="photo title by person, on Flickr"><img src="" width="" height="" alt="" /></a>
Clicking on "Blog This" yields a list of my blogs I've set up in Flickr, but clicking does nothing.
Shouldn't these two options be suppressed/not displayed in the Share This menu?

Kathryn Yu If you actually look at what that code gives you, when all sizes is disabled, there's no image in the embed code. (Having blog this enabled or disabled doesn't affect what shows in the code -- but I think that was always independent of all sizes visibility, no?)

Also, it's not working as Steph describes for video, only for photos.
I have downloads set to Friends/Family. However I was able to log in using an account that is neither, and I could get the Embed code for a video of mine out of Share This, even though the Embed button is not there above the video.
Once I posted the video to a blog using the Embed code, the Share This embed code at the end of the video was also displayed. [edit] never mind that -- the link at the end of the video is actually not there.
But I still don't want people to use Share This to be able to embed the videos.

Right, Lú, Embed This and Blog This are independent of one another. You can have both off, one off, or both on. But why show an option in the Share This menu if you can't do anything with it? I imagine people will either get confused with the way the interface is designed.
For example, if you have All Sizes off, then when I click on Share This, I'll click on Embed This try to copy and paste the HTML code. But that HTML code won't work (because it doesn't actually contain the path to the image), and then I'll think that Flickr is "broken." But Flickr isn't broken, because you turned embedding off for your image! I don't think people will look closely enough at the HTML to notice that the code doesn't contain the path to the .jpg file on Flickr's servers.
If you have Blog This turned off, I could sit around clicking forever on my blogs in the Blog This menu, without understanding why the options "don't work." But Flickr isn't broken, because you turned blogging off for your image! But to me, Flickr's Share This menu looks broken because I can't choose a blog. Again, I don't think people will understand that you turned blogging off....
For both of these options, then I might report it to Flickr as a bug in the general Help Forum :).

I don't have a blog enabled, so I'm not sure what "Blog this" does. But with all sizes off, the embed code does give a different result than the link code -- it gives the title of the image, not the URL.

Lú, it gives the title of the photograph but within the a tag. It's the img src="" part that will render as blank on a browser.
Here is my attempt to embed my friend's image in this help thread. She has All Sizes turn off. I clicked on Share This, then Embed, then copied and pasted the code:

Nice feature. The one aspect that disappoints me is the "embed" link. Right now, I have "All Sizes" disabled ONLY because I want to hide access to the original size images. Everything else (medium, large) is easily copied anyway, and I want anyone to be able to easily share those image sizes. But, despite enabling everyone in the Flickrverse to share my photos, the embed link is totally busted... it embeds nothing.
I really, really, really think you should let others share our photos with the "embed" link. Even better, introduce a "hide original size image only" option. Thanks.

Jake, I'd tend to agree if it had just sort of slipped by without being considered. But if it was in the design from the beginning, it seems plausible to me that just fixing it would be less time and trouble for everyone than pulling the whole feature. Hopefully it's just someone using an 'or' in a bit of logic where they should have an 'and' or something.
And thanks, Walwyn, my paranoia is assuaged. ;-)

kellan It's not returning all email addresses when I type a letter or two anymore, but it is returning a contact's email when I type her screen name.
She has email set to hidden from her profile and I never knew her email address until just now. So, this isn't working as expected from my PoV. Shouldn't it just not return the email address at all, unless the email is visible in the profile?
Or can I just expect that now everyone who is a contact will now know my email address from typing my screen name into that field?
Also, the video thing? Is that how it's supposed to work (visible to all), or is it supposed to work like the photos (embed set to download setting).

1) Is the list of suggestions supposed to be scrollable? From here it's trimmed to just the first few, no scrolling to the rest.

Perhaps I'm being dense, but I read the FAQ and this thread and I'm still confused (as I always am by a new feature). If I have downloads restricted to just friends and family, but choose to allow all contacts to "share" does that allow all my contacts access to all sizes - or only to the medium sized image on the photo page?

Another request to let us share our photos. I desperately love Flickr, and upload the highest resolution of everything I have because of your great editing tools, sharing tools, archiving tools and so forth. I want the world to see my pictures, small, medium & large-- just not the originals (necessarily). Right now, we have 2 options:
1) Let anyone see all sizes of our photos, embed those photos, copy & paste those photos, etc.
OR
2) Let no one (besides contacts): see the large or original size, embed those photos, or copy those photos.
Judging by the number of responses in the Flickr Ideas thread, there is overwhelming support for letting us hide only the originals and letting Flickr users (and the rest of the internet) share our photos in any way imaginable. Please introduce this option. Not having that capability makes me very sad.

myjuditz The Share This link contains a few different things. It contains a link to your photo page, which is exactly what one would get if they visited your photo page and copied the url out of the browser's address bar.
It also has an Embed code *if* you have your download settings available. So, if someone can see All Sizes and you have Share This enabled, then the Embed code will appear.
It also has a Blog This link *if* you have blogging enabled.
Why don't you visit my stream and click through this photo of mine and click Share This?
