I can't possibly read this whole thread to find if this was addressed earlier... please, please, please, for the love of some god somewhere, please don't have videos play by default (imagine what youtube would be like if every video on a page played as soon as it loaded). At least, this should be configurable so that I can experience flickr without having things play by default.
(this is an issue as I open flickr contact updates in multiple tabs and all my dorky friends are now uploading video... when I open ten flickr contact pages in tabs from my updated feed, it's hard to find and shut up the 3 video uploads.)
Thanks for listening if you've got this far. best, Joe

Very selective choices you made there. And, since it's the most lively video forum at the moment, you'll note that many of the people in "Say NO" are in there to argue the case for video on Flickr. At least, those that the admins haven't kicked out of the group yet for voicing a different opinion to their own.

I also demand a turn of of pre-loading videos if play is not pressed.
There are many people out there that need to pay for bandwidth and it spoils the flickr experience for them as they cannot visit the flickr pages freely. I think it should be the same in the "photopages" as in the photostream if users set "autoplay" to off, load the player upon clicking the preview frame of the video.

..ok, so I stayed away from the forums for a couple of days after the video roll-out, just to see how things settled ..and I'm willing to admit that I was vehemently anti-video, although not to the point where I'd ever consider leaving (I'd hesitate to cut off my foot because I stubbed my toe as well)
..and so, after spending a few hours on Flickr this morning, I really don't see that it's made any significant difference in the way I use the service ..I haven't found the videos to be a distraction at all ..I see the little icon in the lower-left of the thumbnail and move on, that's all
..I'm on a piece-of-shit dial-up connection and don't see any difference in page-load times and I haven't had any difficultly uploading some hi-resolution photos ..except for the activity in the forums, it just seems like the same old stuff to me
..of course, this is only from my perspective, based on the way I use Flickr and the groups I administer and am a member of ..I do appreciate that other people's experiences may differ
..while I really wouldn't have minded if Flickr stayed strictly photo-oriented, so far (at least) I'm glad that the folks that wanted the additional functionality of video have got it

It is configurable. I'll dig out the link.

That unfortunately doesn't solve the problem that videos start loading by default, which is an unnecessary bandwidth eater. I hope that changing that is one of the topics currently being discussed by the Flickr staff.

Personaly, I'm not against video, I just feel that the creative process \nd skill set required to make good video are very different to that of photography, and that flickr will be flooded with a lot of crap videos. Certainly the videos I've seen so far have confirmed that with very good photographers posting boring 90 second films of their cat or child.

No more videos. This should not be the kitsch heaven that youtube has always been. The other downside to this is that flickr has now become noisy as well as mobile. I hope it will not degrade itself further with hi5-like features (pimp my profile etc).
This
is exactly what we don't need. I'd much rather ask them for my $25 back then stick around and watch retarded teens pullulate their mobile phone Jackass-knock-offs.

If you missed it, please read what I wrote last night.
Here’s our response to what we see as frequent feedback here in the forum (I’ve paraphrased the feedback in some instances):
“I don’t want video on Flickr.”
We’re sorry, but video is here to stay. We’d love for everyone to give it a shot. If it’s not to your taste, then you should change the default on autoplay. You can distinguish between video and photos by the white arrow bottom left.
“I think video should have it’s own separate site.”
Just as with our international launch last year and building language on top of our global community, we wanted to avoid siloing what is after all, just another format.
“…did none of the staff see this coming?”
Given our experience with the outrage in moving sets from the left-hand side of the page to the right a few years ago (and various adventures since then), we’re very familiar with the passionate response of our members. We can’t be afraid of that. We need to continue to improve, release new features and iterate.
Feedback and iteration are very much part of our process. We very much value the feedback that we receive after features launch. It gives us a chance to take something good and give it that extra polish.
“I should be able to filter video out of my view of Flickr.”
There needs to be a balance between the “voice” of the creator and visitors. While it’s one thing to exclude certain content while searching, it’s quite another thing to presumptively curate what a member is choosing to share in their photostrem.
“I haven’t uploaded any video, why do you say “view [member name]’s photos and videos”
Yup. This is stupid. We’re working on fixing this.
“My group pool is photos only, why does the language reference video?”
Yup. This is stupid. We’re working on fixing this.
“it should not default to auto-play….”
“videos shouldn’t begin to pre-load until I press play”
“video shouldn’t be in explore….”
“I shouldn’t have to use extended search to filter out video”
These are things that we’re pow-wowing about here at Flickr HQ.
And my favourite:
“…We're like the toilet paper she wipes her a-s with!”
I promise you that I don't think of you all as soft, fluffy rolls of triple ply toilet paper. Kittens maybe.... (some with sharp, pointy claws....).

I dislike myspace[free] and youtube[free] as well. But saying Flickr[$25] will automatically become that, is a bit like saying Myspace is going to turn into Flickr, just because it has photo hosting. It defies logic and experience and reality.
Different markets, different people, different product.

what I find unfair are unload limits. You can upload a 150MB video yet you are stuck with a small 10MB photo upload limit. 10MB is not enough to use flickr for storing high-resolution RAW files from top cameras.

I guess, once Microsoft takes over Yahoo, Flickr will work only well with explorer. And as Yahoo forced all oldskool users to become yahoo members, we will all have to become part of the hotmail community...
It is clearly time to pack and go.

Flickr, Flickr, Flickr...why would you do this? You should have taken some sort of poll, at least from members who have payed, before doing this. We joined this site to share and view photographs, and when we realized how amazing it was many of us gave you $25 for a pro account. Now you do this? I'll stick around and see how things play out, but I'm very disappointed with this decision.

Although I'm not keen on the idea of video on flickr mixed in with stills, I'd be happier with a separate flickr site that's linked. As for leaving flickr altogether - have those of you suggesting that actually looked at the alternatives? I'd suggest that flickr with video in its present form is a damn sight better than most if not all the alternatives (many have video anyway!)
As for not caring for their members, how does anyone know that they haven't responded to requests to include video? We may well be in the minority - unfortunately.

Heather,
Thak you so much for taking the time to read all 2,531 replies here. I don't envy you and your postion here.
I do have one question. When we are setting our preferences we can select if we would like to have CGI/Screenshot and artwork returned in our search query. Would it be a possiblilityin the future to have videos as an option as something we could choose to see, and honestly for those tha are only interested in videos, maybe a photo filter would be appropriate here. I understand when you say
"There needs to be a balance between the “voice” of the creator and visitors. While it’s one thing to exclude certain content while searching, it’s quite another thing to presumptively curate what a member is choosing to share in their photostrem."
but i'm inclined to wonder how video is any different than artworks, cgi and or screenshots. There are some here that the voice of the creator of those images is likely to be feeling excluded by allowing us to turn off those results.
I'm wondering if my (among others) asking for a filter was interpreted as putting blank spots in peoples streams. I for one would be sad if that happened. If i choose to enter someones personal stream then i should see what they have, art, cgi, vid..... Its just the search results.
Again thank you for your passion in caring for flickr. I imagine its a rather thankless job quite often.

I don't like the idea of videos here, but if they will be here for good, at least leave us choice if we want to see tons of lil' players on our screen (by clicking a simple option which disables videos). Despite this annoying video thing I still thinking this is a good photosharing service.

Sorry, Heather, that's rubbish! So, I can filter out porn, graphics and other such crap from my viewing experience but I can't filter our video because a user chooses to share it with me? I have never read such a load of nonsense before.

I'm continually amazed by the confusion. Legislators and governments hold elections to allow citizens to vote. Democratic decision making in action.
Businesses don't hold elections or allow consumers to vote. They do allow shareholders to vote. If you want to vote on Flickr's business decisions, you'll need to buy stock.

hangten: as referenced, this is about as crazy as it got when sets got moved from the left of the screen to the right. So we'll see how "divisive" this maintains in a month or so.
And since video is now here, it sounds like those people who absolutely cannot accept change and abide and handle it in any way or shape or form? They have some decisions to make.
As far as slowdown goes, I dunno. Flickr has been running faster for me since the launch. Should I attribute that to video? Or maybe not assume right off that one has anything to do with the other?
However, any impact on how all of Flickr functions as a result of this, certainly a valid concern, and one I share.

No, video is not "just another format." It's an entirely different genre. I fail to see why this is so difficult for some to grasp. It can be a fine art form, an enjoyable one to behold, but it has as much relationship to photography as prose has to poetry.
If you're not going to listen to your members, then at least have the decency to allow members to choose the content they view. I don't come here to view videos. I come here to share in photography. I don't think it's asking too much that I be given control over what content I have to sort through in order to get to what I want. I also don't think those of us interested solely in photography ought to have to compete with videos in order to make it to the Explore page.

Stephen: how can you filter out graphics from your viewing experience? Currently Flickr lets you filter out content type, such as adult content, but they don't let you filter out format type, such as art or screenshots. or video.
I'm not using the best words up there, but point is, video is now equal to art on Flickr. You can choose not to have video or art come up in searches, but you can't choose to have it hidden from view within the photostreams themselves.
There needs to be a permanent search filter in our account settings for video, like there is for art. But that's likely coming soon. But blocking non-adult content from being visible in a photostream, so far isn't the way Flickr has rolled.
"I use my Flickr gallery as a professional portfolio of my gallery"
Considering Flickr is intended only for non-commercial, non-professional use, that argument won't help you much.

Stephen Macken "Pretty worthless until the Microhoo rumours and pretty worthless after Microsnot lose interest and wander off. "
Stockholders get to vote no matter what the value of the stock.
But it sounds like you think stockholders should worry about the return on their investment, not voting on corporate policies. I repeat, if you want to vote on corporate decision making you'll have to buy stock and then forget that your income from that stock is based on its value. Just vote your conscience instead of your pocketbook.

Safety level is a completely separate set of parameters from format -- as it was when we were photos only.

"Items", "things" and "stuff" appear on pages where's the a possibility of mutliple formats. It may not be possible to be so granular at the scale that we're at. Perhaps this could be hooked into what we're looking at if you haven't uploaded any video.
I for one don't care to filter someone else's photostream. What I want to filter is my "what's new from your contacts" page.
I think that's pretty much the same thing (perhaps a little worse given that you're suppressing content from members that you've chosen to follow).

"Flickr loves you". And Oceania has always been at war with Eurasia. Seems to me that the powers-that-be only love the money they've taken from paying customers without providing the product that was the subject of the transaction. It would have been nice to have some warning before renewing. I might still have renewed, but at least I'd know the quid I'd be getting for my pro quo.
I agree that content of vids cannot be the issue. For me, it's the differences in the art forms. I really like movies. I also really like books. However, that doesn't mean I'd like to see IMDB-Amazon.com. Heck, going with even closer media, I'd hate to see a mashup of a website about movies with one about live theatre. The media really is the message.

As tim_walls correctly points out, we don't want to limit what others put on their streams, we simply want some options on what we see when we are on Flickr, just as with screenshots and adult content.

Searcher---
You asked
how can you filter out graphics from your viewing experience? Currently Flickr lets you filter out content type, such as adult content, but they don't let you filter out format type, such as art or screenshots. or video.
Go to your account, select privacy permissions. Second to the last thing you cn edit is content filters. There are check boxes that allow you to filter out content like art, illustration, cgi, and the like. check those boxes to not have to deal with them.
This is where we would like the additional options of photos and videos on their own check boxes.

I for one don't care to filter someone else's photostream. What I want to filter is my "what's new from your contacts" page.
I think that's pretty much the same thing (perhaps a little worse given that you're suppressing content from members that you've chosen to follow). Good God, I am astonished!
How dare you criticise how I choose to follow or not follow the people who I choose to be my contacts!
Absolutely unbelievable; you really do have utter contempt for your users, don't you?

But you are certainly not gonna give us a filter despite the numerous demand for one. No compromises from the staff whatsoever.....

I wasn't aware that were I to post screenshots, that you could filter that out when visiting my photostream. Yes, for search, but not for general perusing. As I mentione above, we're looking into at what stage in search related activity that you can sort video out of the results.

"“I should be able to filter video out of my view of Flickr.”
There needs to be a balance between the “voice” of the creator and visitors. While it’s one thing to exclude certain content while searching, it’s quite another thing to presumptively curate what a member is choosing to share in their photostrem."
This is why I think Zyrcster's idea of a tab for the photostream (still images) and a tab for the videostream (moving images) would work. If I clicked through to your account, I would see that you have video (because there would be a video tab) but I wouldn't have to look at any of it.
By virtue of the fact that flickr has a safesearch feature, the Viewer already can control what he/she wants to see. Just because someone chooses to have adult content in their photostream does not mean it's a creative choice that I have to live with. So to say that the Viewer in this case can't choose what to view when it comes to moving images versus still images in the stream is arbitrary line-drawing. (For now, I'm counting art/illustration/cgi equivalent to photos; hence still images. I'm not touching that thorny issue with a fifty foot pole.)
I fully understand that video is here to stay. However, the seeming unwillingness to make an effort to accommodate those who prefer not to view video (and any acknowledgment that many people joined flickr for the photo-sharing community, not the multi-media functionality) does leave a bitter taste in my mouth.

I'm sorry, my head is a little fuzzy. I'm missing the point of what I'm saying that appears to be offensive to you. It's not my intent.

RoninVision: but how can you separate what is "on" Flickr, with folks' photostreams? our photosteam IS Flickr. When you come to my photostream, you should see what I have there, because it's my stream, and it is what I want to share.
You can already hide video from search results (but I agree that should be a permanent setting) and you can choose not to participate in groups that allow video. And if your contacts are beginning to fill your "Contacts View" with video, perhaps these aren't the people you photo-only folk want to associate with anymore anyway. So how is it that you can't tailor your existing Flickr experience, to be exactly or nearly exactly what it always has been for you, without disrupting the desired view of my personal photostream?

I hope the autoload issues are also still being discussed. Turning off autoplay has not stopped the downloading from your servers through my routers and computer.

At the moment, my content type is set to Photos Only it specifically excludes "art, illustration, CGI and other non-photographic images in search results". Why not video? If a Greasemonkey script writer can write such a script, why can't the flickr site team add such a filter?
There is some agenda here if flickr won't allow us to disable video content at an account level and calling it sharer's choice is just nonsense.

I'm wondering if the demanding here iis being counterproductive. We aren't in a position really to demand. It's not our website. It's Yahoos.
We can ask and if it doesn't happen its not the end of the world. One can make their own site, host your own images the way you want them.
I am asking for the additional option of content filtering on both ends. and I feel its fair to those who are super happy about the videos to be able to filter out photos just like those who are happy with photos getting to filter out vids
It's a request. It's not my site. Its a service i use but its not mine.
I really hope it will be considered is all.

some feedback....
I'm strongly FOR having video on flickr, though I can see why a a sub-section of the flickr populace might not feel the same way.
My suggestions:
1. Have 4 separate explore sections for photos, art. cgi & video. I have art and cgi filtered out as default, but I would be more tempted to peruse those types of media if I had an explore type mechanism to filter out all the less interesting stuff. Also it doesn't really make sense having photos & videos (or for that matter art & cgi) turning up in the same explore section.
2. Like art & cgi, you should be able to default filter out video. (and to be fair, photos too). Let people search (easily) for what they want.
3. A user's photostream should display what they post. ie if you come to my photostream, you see everything I have posted.
(same as now)
Otherwise I generally agree with Striatic & the Searcher. My gut feeling is that the silent majority of flickr are in favour and that the end result won't be like Youtube.
If video is not your thing AND flickr promptly implements the tweaks as suggested, stick around for a little while, I bet your experience of flickr won't change much at all.

Turtlephotography & Stephen: Try again. Take a closer look at that setting. It does not let you hide art from view, only from searches. That is exactly what I said. And it is also what I believe video should be included in. Currently you can only exclude video from each search using Advanced Search. So you already have that ability, just not as a "sticky" choice. yet.
Go ahead, give it a try. Click on art in your settings, then go have a wander around my photostream. It'd be empty if what you think it does, were true.

But when I suppress adult content from my contacts that's okay. Again, arbitrary line-drawing.

LOL
That is a funny and so true. The fuk you attitude of FLickr and its' big brother attitude will be it's downfall... it will be slow but inevitable. I will be off once my sub runs out. Not just beacuase of the video issue, but the attitude and lack of respect for the customers. Sad.

Another dropdown list similar to [Home You Organize Contacts Groups Explore] would be perfect:
>Content
----All
----Photos
----Videos
----CGI/Art
----Screenshot

Myles. Again. Which customers should Flickr respect? Just because the against-folk are the vocal folk, does not make them the majority. If the majority of Flickr wants, enjoys, or does not care, about video, then doesn't that mean that Flickr is, in fact, listening to its customers?
Turtlephotography: yes, exactly. And you can do that now, just manually. And I agree totally it should be in your account settings. But that will not hide video from view in any other way or other area of Flickr. Which seems to be what others are advocating.

Surely enabling users to filter out video content ought to be a simple matter compared to implementing video in the first place - it would appear to be the major gripe - most protestors would probably be willing to accept its existence if they were allowed the choice to view or not.
Give us the filter, monitor how many choose to use it and you'll have a measure of the success (or otherwise) of the venture.

Heather said:"Perhaps in the old days, when there were fewer members of the team, yes. But we're at a size now where we're developing new features in parallel. There's more good stuff coming."
great. Now you can F up the Map AND the uploader at the same time.

Yes, yes, you said it better than I did, that's what I want as well. It's not to censor, it's to find what you're looking for easer!

I would still like to know if it is possible to restrict videos to a Server Farm (just like photos are on farm[1-4].static.flickr.com)?
This way I might be able to compromise with my employers and get them to block only a Server Farm that hosts Flickr Videos instead of blocking all of Flickr now that you host Videos
Can I get an answer from staff on this?
