Are you suggesting that websites evolving is a bad thing? And that when you pay your money to a website you're buying some kind of stasis, a guarantee that, like the car, nothing will change while you rent it?

By that logic, screenshots and artwork should not be here either.
Besides, Flickr still *is* a photo sharing website.

"Let's hope Flickr scales well because 90 seconds of video /150MB x however many tens of thousands per day is a huge amount of bandwidth and storage. And we all know how Flickr gets the hiccups now already... "
I think with over 2.4 billion photos uploaded to date, flickr already has the scaling aspect down. And of course, a 150MB video that is uploaded isn't going to be served to viewers as 150MB. It'll be compressed to something quite a bit smaller. (If you can make a 150MB video at regular sizes that is only 90 secs long, you're doing something wrong.)

I was with you up until the Microsoft/Vista analogy. You're right, Microsoft hasn't asked me. Which is why I'm buying a Mac for my next computer (which is a purchase I hope to be making sooner than later).
My pro account is paid through January 2009. I will give flickr and video a chance until then. But if I feel that my flickr experience has changed for worse (due to video) I will look for a better product. Why should I pay for a feature I don't want or need?
To those of you saying just give video a try; you're just going to have to accept that it's not everyone's cup of tea. I've owned a camera for five years now that has had video capability. It wasn't the fact that up until last night I couldn't post video on flickr that has kept me from using it. Just because flickr has decided it's neato doesn't mean that I suddenly have this urge to run out and shoot video.
And Eric and Shanan (staff) stop trying to silence the dissenters by telling people to give others a chance to be heard. No one has been shouted out of the group. In fact, the beta testers have all had quite a vocal and visible presence here through out the day. We're already upset over the changes. Having staff give the appearance (intended or not) that they're trying to silence the nay-sayers isn't going to garner you any good will.

Possible because it's irrelevant? Functionality has been added, not removed. Whatever you used flickr for before, you can still do it now. Therefore, the addition of the ability to upload videos is irrelevant to you.

@Marco Wessel: thats the max size you can upload at and were talking people here who wont be videographers who will upload a MOV video from their PnS camera at high res for no reason other than they didnt know they could reduce the quality for web uploads. Do that enough during peak hours and have Flickr convert it to the flv flash format and it will cause some lags now and then.
There has been a "Flickr is Slow" posting in this forum for months now, so I don't think that they have it down 100% all the time for non moving videos, err I mean photos. :)

And "beauty" is in the eye of the beholder. So what's crap to me, may be riveting for you. For me, almost every video in the video video video group is crap. The four pages uploaded last night by one of my contacts, was pure and utter crap. A video group for what is in your fridge - crap.

I'm sorry I got it wrong, but the article talks about the freemium way of working (Which flickr uses) but it mentioned nothing about ads.
Sorry my bad.
But according to all the latest research despite massive growth in users of social network sites like flickr the revune from advertising is actually very low. For example myspace had a 500% growth in users in a year but only had 13% growth in advertising revenue despite investing heavily in the advertising functions on its site.
statistics from broadcast weekly
So the correct statment would be that the majority of the burden is carried by 1% of the users.

You don't have to give it a try, its just not going to affect you is all people are saying.
Well actually it probably is indirectly, as the changes in group administration that came along on the back of all this, is allowing the 18+ groups to filter out any images that aren't made 'restricted'. That is going to force people to flag up their stuff correctly if they want to add it to the 18+ groups.

Adding moving-images to flickr, takes away from still-frame photography as an art in the flickr environment, and has the proven ability to dissect. At least give it a new domain name: videos.flickr.com, or something.

Please remove the video controls / download status from a video that is not playing (in the same way that they don't show on a video that is playing). It will look a lot nicer. (You could put a small icon in the corner, or after the title, that shows people that it's a video, and not just another photo).
It will look way, way better.

You'll find most of the slowness mentioned in that thread is not related to flickr but to the ISP they happen to be using. Flickr is rarely ever slow for me. (I'm well-connected, yet outside of the US).
Movies from PnS cameras won't be 150MB for a minute and a half. They only way to get to 150MB in 90 seconds with a reasonable frame size is to store video uncompressed.

2 of those examples are video-specific groups that you can avoid by not joining them, right?
I know that you had a concrete problem with a ton of videos showing up in your contact's pages, but if you ended up dropping those contacts over time because they only uploaded video, you wouldn't see that either.
I don't doubt that you don't want to see video, but I'm trying to understand where it is that you go in your daily Flickr rounds to see if video is killing it.
Maybe links are a bad idea, but are there groups you belong to that have been overrun? Is the stuff being shoved in your face anywhere?

look, i'm tired of this. i've had my say, but trollistic buffoons like zyrcster and walwyn are making me want to fight even harder. as my last post in this thread, here are the two points i want to make.
1. it was originally, and last time i paid, a PHOTO site. sure it can change, but that is not the reason why i came here. in fact, the lack of video was a major reason i came here.
2. i'll stick it out for a while, but i really hope some options are given to the people that obviously don't like the change of environment. i am dumbfounded by the incredulousness the above-mentioned folks have as to why anyone would oppose this. get real. there are a slew of options flickr could entertain that could easily make EVERYONE happy, and that is all i ask to be considered. thank you.

How? How does it take away the 'art environment', when that 'art environment is entirely of yoru own creation? Flickr did not create an art photo site, it created a 'photo sharing site'. The emphasis on 'sharing' rather than 'photo' is just bigger than you thought.
It does not at all denigrate from the ethos of flickr - sharing. Your perception appears to be flawed. Flickr was never an 'art' site.

RubyMae: I assumed they were telling the non-dissenters to go away, to make room for more dissenters. that's kind of funny.
"if I feel that my flickr experience has changed for worse (due to video) I will look for a better product. Why should I pay for a feature I don't want or need?"
That's valid, and I agree. Most of my concern with video has to do with the backend, how will it impact Flickr, the rest of Flickr. I'm relatively confident that they'll stay on top of speed/storage issues (I assume there was some significant investment in prep for this release, which probably led to the doubling of the photo size limit, too.) but I'm less so when it comes to the site-wide things that may get pushed back, to focus on video functions. Time will tell, indeed.
[edit: stubby: how about waiting to see if it happens. Since video is pro/paid only, and video porn is forbidden, I don't honestly expect to see this as much of an issue.]

Personally, I've seen a LOT of flickering black screen today.
I agree with many others - the lack of video here is one reason I chose to be so active here. There are plenty of places to host video, and a partner site may have been a wonderful thing. Having this thrust upon us isn't so nice, though.
While the crap may not be here yet...it's soon to be, and the dregs will follow. I would have liked this place to remain pure, but then nothing ever does. Greed overtakes everything eventually.

"@marco - why do you think a changed environment is irrelevant? still photography and videography are two completely different disciplines."
Be that as it may, this change still does not impact your use of the website so long as you aren't uploading videos. There is nothing you could do earlier that you can not do anymore with this new feature. Therefore, I see it as quite useless to bicker about it so much.
"1. it was originally, and last time i paid, a PHOTO site. sure it can change, but that is not the reason why i came here. in fact, the lack of video was a major reason i came here."
And it still is. There are about 2.4 billion photos on flickr. Allowing videos to also exist does not change that.
In fact, what exactly is a video? A sequence of lots and lots of photos! You should be ecstatic because of the large amounts of extra photos you can see now!

zyrcster As I've stated before, no one is forcing me to watch video. But to avoid video, I must once again, narrow my use of flickr. Video is not adding to my flickr experience; it's taking away from it. If flickr stops being fun for me then I will not renew my account. As I've stated before, I'm not finding video to be very fun.
I understand that it's adding value for many customers. I am not one of those customers. Your reasons for finding it valuable are not sufficient for me.
I'm not losing sleep over this. This isn't the first time that a website I relied upon lost it's functionality for me. But I don't need to spend time, money and effort supporting a website that I no longer find useful.
It's disappointing but not the end of the world.

um. what statistics? You've shown some random sampling of groups. How about the number of video uploaded already? That would be a nice statistic.
You might find this shocking, but the vast majority of Flickr users don't use groups at all, don't even look at them. Hmm, that almost sounds like a metaphor for something.

I just refreshed Everyone's Photos 20x and didn't see one video. I saw two protest signs, though. I also saw 20 pages of mediocre photos, with a few sprinkles of great photography. It seems video is easier to avoid than mediocre photos.

I don't think they are the *right* place for Flickr,
but I have been toying with the idea of uploading one myself.
I am simply expressing the feelings of the MANY members of Flickr,
as well as the groups I administrate,
who are clearly unhappy with the Video idea.
I do agree , however, that Videos have nothing to do with Photography, and should be kept seperate
(if not restricted to a member's stream, should Flickr keep this new option)

Well what is it a question of? What I like against what I don't like?

Criz, you just made my point for me:
My Flickr comments on those videos range from funny to sweet to just cool. My YouTube comments are a barrage of nonsense and spam that I continually have to delete.
Let's talk again in six months. LOL!

It's been 15 pages and at least 1000 replies since I last commented in this thread. Since then I've uploaded my first video and I love how it integrates with my photostream and sets.
As others have said, there is and will always be a large percentage of stuff on Flickr or any user content driven website which others find of no interest... or even find to be rubbish.
What both Flickr, and more importantly Flickr's user communities, have always been good at is setting up groups, tagging things, and making it easier to find the gems amongst all the junk. This was true with photos and I have faith that it will be the same with video clips.
I signed on for a way to have a secondary backup of my photos and share them with friends and family, and now for the same price I get to upload unlimited video clips too? What's not to like?
There's always a huge backlash every time Flickr does anything. Either about the fact that something was done or about the way that it was done. A seemingly large number of users always tout that they hate the change and some of those even vow that they are leaving, and probably even some who actually do.
In the long run it's always been a good thing for the majority of users, most of which are so happy with how Flickr's services are working for them that they can't be bothered to come to the forum.
I suppose my post takes on an air of "get over it", but then as I read most of the posts in this thread... that's the three words that keep coming to my mind. :-)

zyrcster I don't look at Everyone's photos. I do look at my contacts page, and nearing 50% of my contacts most recent uploads are video. I wasn't joking about having a fair number of beta-testers as contacts, either.

OK, but by then I think I'll be even more enamored with video. As the admin and a mod of two video groups already, I have an opportunity to help shape how video looks on Flickr, hopefully for the better.

I'm done with the bickering and bantering here. It's obvious my opinion doesn't count in this matter anyhow. Toodles!

RubyMae: obviously this being all shiney and new, there's going to be a bit of a larger amount of videos posted by people a) trying it out (notice my shit-tastic 3gp upload) and b) remembering they have some old stuff they'd like to show (notice my timelapse). I'm confident that will slow down during the next few days.

RubyMae Yea, I know, and that would bug me too.
I posted a very cool set of ideas earlier. I wondered what you thought of them. If you have time. They are easier to find in the Flickr Ideas thread, though.

RubyMae: Then clearly 50% of your contacts want video, yet you'd rather hamper their experience by denying them that option, rather than simply just ignore the little arrow symbol?

I did see your refrigerator video, Criz. It was quite cute.
Like I said here...or perhaps somewhere else (LOL!), I don't mind video per se - I just would have liked it to remain elsewhere other than Flickr. For me, a link worked fine.
I also liked the professional aspect of a photography community.

@zyrcster
They're great ideas, and I hope at least some of them will be implemented.
What I regret is that all the time they take to implement this video thing is time they don't use to improve other details, to work on other requests...

"Heather, Kevin and Co. are saying, "Let them eat cake". "
anthony: I don't think they're saying that. But if they are, I think they'd really like you to film yourself eating cake, and post it on Flickr.
Clearly they're still lurking about, but they may not have much to offer at this stage. First there was "denial", then clearly, and currently still, "anger". But I'd gauge we're nearing the "bargaining" stage. That's when they can probably have more input.

"I also liked the professional aspect of a photography community."
You went to the wrong place to start with, then. Flickr was never `professional', even though the paid account might be called `pro'.
Ack, the clock says 3:31 am is really really bedtime. *puts away his trout*.

Well, projects do have to get shuffled.
On the bright side, we have a new uploader, we have double the file size for photos now, and we can set content types and filters on group pools.
I also liked the professional aspect of a photography community.
And that still exists. There are still 1000s of photographers on Flickr. Good ones.
But there have also always been the more casual amateur photographer. With so-so photos. Do they not belong here either? Do they make Flickr less "pure"? I'd have a hard time getting behind that argument.

I don't believe anyone is getting "cash for comment". Because, judging from the absence of staff through much of this topic, Flickr doesn't really seem to care what we think anyway! Heather, Kevin and Co. are saying, "Let them eat cake".
Marie Antoinette I am not. I think we've responded to constructive critcism throughout and we're definitely pow wowing here back at Flickr HQ. That said, these forums topics are like surfing a wild tsunami and feedback that we do provide can easily be lost.
I've been with the team through a variety of feature launches that have brought change to the community. Through it all, we've been hear listening to feedback, making change where necessary to make Flickr better. We want to hear your feedback and I think that for the most part, we take all comers.
Personally, the emerging side of feedback that's become almost abusive via protest images in comments leaves me mostly speachless (and I'm a talker). But we understand that it's important for people to have their say. We haven't implemented any sort of "clean up" tool for this, leaving it up to individuals to determine what they are comfortable with within their own photostream.
I'm not sure what to say to those who don't want peanut butter in their chocolate (so to speak). Video is now part of the Flickr DNA and while we will definitely be addressing some of the great feedback for ways that the implementation can be massaged towards better things, we're not pulling up stakes and rolling back. When we're ready, we'll share those changes with you hear (if you've seen any of Dunstan and I tripping overourselves regarding video in Explore, you'll appreciate that we want to have our ducks in a row).
We have a wonderfully passionate community and whether your imagery moves or stays still appears to be divisive. I mentioned earlier in this thread that I was very much against it when I heard that it was on the road map. If I had my way, I'd chuck all things digitial (even your beautiful DSLR) and dial the flickrverse back to all things film. That's not going to happen. I have to respect that there will be change and that the flickrverse is really a multiverse of people all who have different ideas of how they want to share the world around them.
Just as there are more megapixels now than there even a few years ago, I think that how we capture both still and moving is going to change dramatically over the next few years. Including video within Flickr will enable those who choose to....
I think I've gone off on a tangent, but as I began this post with Marie Anne I am not, I want to finish that we're about being inclusive. While there are a few rough edges that need to be polished out, I think that in the long run, video on Flickr is a wondeful complement what's been built so far.

Perhaps in the old days, when there were fewer members of the team, yes. But we're at a size now where we're developing new features in parallel. There's more good stuff coming.

nope, I would prefer Flickr limit itself to still photography. I believe the addition of video is what has been slowing down my Flickr experience (and I know it's not my internet connection...). I think Flickr is "known" for the spectacular photography, and video splits the focus too much.

I'm gonna yell PIE in a flickr minute. Or perhaps 90 seconds...which now has become a buzzword.
Lies, Damn lies and then there's statistics.
Big deal 15,000 or 15 million videos. It doesn't change the fact that video is a slippery slope. I guess video is here to stay. Let's all just belly up to the bar or go belly up. The Lowest Common Denominator wins as usual. Maybe we should all take a trip to Disneyland and give the masses what they want huh? Pretty pictures tied up in bows and all the butt kissing and game playing at being the most popular.
I don't even know when to start or where to start doing those things. I do what I do and so be it. Let the chips fall where they may. So what if I don't get as many views or comments as some of the Popular Kids in school. Eh..whatever.
Have a nice day.

flickr can't be bothered to fix comment notification so it doesn't repeatedly blurt out that I've got NEW COMMENTS.
And flickr won't give us options to format the screen background so I can try a nice black or charcoal gray background with understated caption colors that don't scream for attention. Anything but the minimalist Web 2.0 nightmare that is the current color scheme.
But flickr will give us 90-seconds of video that apparently very few people want (and of those who want their minute-and-a-half of fame, far fewer know what to do with it).
But I'm not upset--and y'know why?
Because flickr LOVES ME!! It says so right on the logo.
And you always hurt the one's you love.

This is the worse idea EVER! Bringing video to Flickr is like bringing a stripper to a 4 year old's birthday party, it doesn't belong. Who ever thought this up should be fired, sent to a deserted island and banned from humanity before they screw something else beautiful up.
