Responding to zyrcster from the thread that was closed while I was typing my reply:

If a lot of my contacts go to primarily video, so I'm skipping over umpteen video uploads to find a sporadically posted photo, then flickr would not be as enjoyable (and yes, I can already think of at least a dozen contacts that will choose video over photos). If many comment/discussion threads turn into discussions about video, then flickr will not be enjoyable for me. If groups I'm active in stagnate because everyone is flocking to new video sharing groups, then flickr will not be enjoyable for me. If every Help Forum thread turns into a question about video then flickr will not be enjoyable for me. ;-)

I can imagine many ways video will impact my flickr experience. Merely excluding it from searches is not enough for me. But I only have one foot out the door. I will wait until the feature is actually launched before following with the other.

Well, I'm convinced that there will be video-only groups on Flickr.

Besides, admins of groups can choose to exclude video from their pools, and presumably from the group, too.

I doubt very much that video will make photography stagnate on Flickr.

That said, I'm one of your contacts that has a few vids in my stream now. But on the whole, I intend to stick with photography, by and large.

The Searcher  Pro User  says:

RubyMae: we'll have to see how this will play out, but with the limitations Flickr has built in (90 seconds, pro only, "safe" & "moderate" only, homemade only, etc) I would see this as one of those "hobbies" that kick in here, less a complete takeover. Like HDR groups, TiltShift groups, FishEye Lens groups, etc. People will take those kinds of shots, but unlikely that's all they'll do.

You may find an initial spike, as everyone jumps at the chance to make a video. Then once the novelty wears off, and people realize they still have to be creative to make something good, it'll settle into a niche. maybe.

worcester: they have a little triangle in the corner, even in thumbs. And if you click on it, the thumb will actually play.

dbthayer: I don't think they have anything for excluding seeing them on people's photostreams, just from searches.

However, considering the content filters can hide content on streams, it does seem like a feature option that they could add. Depending on interest, I suppose. So you may have to wait for a bit more backlash for that one.

Just when I thought Flickr couldn't get any better you go and add video. I guess I'll still be using Vimeo for longer videos but Flickr will be perfect for short clips I want to share with friends.

As for everyone's moaning and groaning over the addition of video, well... it's something thats there and can be used if you want or need it but not something that is going to be bothersome. You can even restrict your searches so you never see any video if you're so inclined. For those only interested in the artistic side of photography... well I'm sure most would agree that video can be every bit as artistic as photography. And for those that want to share baby's first steps... well... there's no substitute for video, is there? :)

I do have a question though... is video going to start showing up on the Explore pages too?

Nevermind, I see the bit in the FAQ now. :)

Flickr is almost certainly the best online photo management and sharing application in the world.

tavop (and cathycracks) you should both read the FAQ before assuming you know what it is first. They're trying to do something the other sites do not. It isn't meant to be a video site like YouTube (which would suck) thus the limits on content and time. I also haven't seen any other video sites that do "portrait" video, which adds an odd photo format element to it.

Maybe you should wait for the YouTube videos to get here, before assuming that's where it's going.

illinichick: I wouldn't assume you or RubyMae are going to be in the minority. This a pretty major change/transition/addition for a photo site. Change is scary, and considering the insta-break Flickr experienced just as this launched, often rightly so. I'm benefit-doubty, until I see the bad, instead of going by my assumtions.

However, I am now miffed that video is going to be allowed in Explore, yet artwork is still banned. Kind of breaks they're whole "you're not allowed because Flickr is a PHOTO sharing site" argument.

Or at the very least (since Explore isn't really my issue) make images flagged as "art" show up in searches by DEFAULT, instead of hidden by default, as it is now. Considering Video appears to be defaulting to visible, that seems only fair.

The Searcher If you're read the blog and the FAQ, we're not supposed to think of it as video, but rather a long moving photo. So the distinction between between drawing/illustrations and photos still exists.

The Searcher  Pro User  says:

Photojunky: it will likely be more difficult to take video off of Flickr than images, since it needs to play to be snatched. Video can be embedded, but odds are that's a control you have like "all sizes" for who can and can't do that.

But like YouTube, there will likely be 3rd party tools written shortly that can "strip" out a video while it's being played, and copy it elsewhere.

So with everything else, self-policing will be an issue. Of course, the "value" of 90 second video clips, may make that not such a big issue.

You have intriduced another bug with the changes.

Now all groups can flag acceptable safe, or moderate or restricted content. Probably a good idea however, even private 18+ and public 18+ groups are restricted to safe content only by default. Surely if they are flagged for 18+ only, the default should be to set the group to all safety levels?

The end result is that now I cannot upload any of my shots to any group I belong to.

The Searcher I agree. I have always thought that Explore should be open to artwork as it is a part of Flickr. (And I'm a fan of yours). If Video is going to be allowed then I see the argument behind opening it to artwork also. I doubt that will ever happen, and am not happy about video being so at all. Not that I personally give a damn about Explore, but in that I'm concerned about what posts may be coming to the help forum about it. Our little vomiting panda may be on overtime.

When I search a particular photo stream, I have no way of filtering videos out of the results.

I can go to Advanced Search, but then I can't limit my search to a particular photo stream.

Cool thanks for the answer. Though I give Flickr a congrats on their new video feature I will probably keep Flickr just for my photos. My youtube just for videos. Simply because I wouldn't want to lose any of my contacts just because I upload a video or two. I read farther up some will remove their contacts if they upload videos. I have come to know my contacts pretty well. Sure wouldn't want this to happen. But Go Flickr and congrats to the staff .

I uploaded my first video and it got squashed from widescreen to 4:3: www.flickr.com/photos/amanzi/2399211403 and there's strange horizontal bars in the video. This file was straight from my Sony camcorder, no software editing.
