[Closed] Contact Issues

Flickr Staff

Kevin says:

STAFF NOTES

29 August 5:30 PM PST We opened a new topic over here for this issue. The lag issues that affected the contacts feeds over mostly Wednesday and Thursday have subsided from the Flickr end, if you think there are problems, please post to the new topic with specifics. Please read through the top post as well, thanks!
:)

27 August 8:45 AM PST Thanks for the reports from today, we're looking into them currently.

18 August 9:05PM: We've isolated the problem and resolved it. Everything should be back to normal, but please let us know if you still aren't seeing fresh stuff from your friends.

18 August 8:45PM: Aloha! If your "recent photos from my friends" page is looking a little dusty, just a note to let you know we're looking into this now, and will have either a fix or an update asap.

----

30 July 2:30 PM PST: During the interruption of the contacts updates several hours ago, some reports of updates still lagging have been reported. We have several examples that have been documented, we'll post if we need any others.

30 July 9:22 AM PST: Updates should be happening again now (or shortly if you haven't noticed yet).

30 July 6:50 AM PST: We see that the feed to the contacts page was broken a few hours ago, and we are looking at the issue.

Old Updates:
10 April 8:25AM PST
The contacts details should be going again for you; we're investigating causes on this. Thanks- Kevin (And what happened has been posted here)

10 April 7:20AM PST
I'm going to open a new trouble ticket to address the current bug. We'll provide updates as soon as possible -- Heather

----------

20 March
Notifications of your contacts uploads was switched back on several days ago. The blank spaces on the contacts photos should no longer be appearing. We're still tracking some issues regarding contact relationships, one of which some members who are reciprocal contacts might only show on the contact list, but not at all on the photos page.

5 March 10:15 AM PST
The previously mentioned data backfills are done, still to do is work out the notifications of new uploads from your contacts. That may not happen before next week. We're also looking at some residual weirdness for a few things like some cases of recent uploads not being shown as expected, or the missing image spots on your contacts photos section of your main landing page. It's a pretty small number at this time, but we are building some tools to try and track what is happening.

3 March, 2:45 PM PST
There are two outstanding issues we're working on now:

1. In a small number of cases, you might not be able to see photos from people you've marked as friends.

2. The emails we send to let you know about new uploads from your friends are still disabled.

Also, the data backfill is still underway, but should be done shortly.

----------

29 February, 1:44pm PST
Ok! We've deployed the Big Fix to contacts so everyone should now be seeing recent photos from your contacts again.

There are 2 known issues that may affect some people:

1. You might see some gaps where your friends' photos are listed, on your home page and/or on the page that shows photos from your friends. Don't worry too much about this - it will shake itself out as we return to our normal programming.

2. You may still see a few old-ish photos from your friends. We're transferring the fresh stuff into the new Contacts system over the next day or two, so that won't last too long either.

Thanks for your patience, everyone!

29 February 10:00 AM PST
So, the biggest chunk of the work has been completed; there was a large backfill of data that had to occur since we shut down the contacts updates to accounts. We're going to begin testing soon in preparation for turning contacts back on, so some of you may see your contacts update, while others may not. If you hear of some people seeing their contacts' latest photos but you can't see them yet, don't panic. It's a gradual roll-out... a bit like a sunrise -- Kevin

28 February 15:20 PST:
Our operations and developers teams who have been hard at work are making good progress. Thanks for hanging in there too. :)

----------

Initial Post
Per the previous help topic, contacts updates have been slow to happen. We've been working on a solution to completely change the way this works. Starting around Friday evening, the lag started going up at a much steeper rate than before, and our databases that were using the old contact system, basically stopped keeping up.

Given the deterioration of updates around contacts and your contact's recent photos, we've taken what might seem like rather drastic action. For the time being, your contact's recent photos will not be updating. This functionality has been taken offline by the dev team while we endeavour to implement a scalable solution that should improve the situation. We expect that the downtime will be no greater than 48 hours (2 days).

What this means:

* Your contact's recent photos on your launch page will remain static
* Your contact's recent photos page will remain static
* You won't get emails telling you about contact's recent uploads
* When you add a contact, you will receive an email confirming the relationship, but you will not see their new recent photos unless you visit their photostream
* If you add someone as a Friend or Family, you will be able to to see the photos they want to share with you when you visit their photostream

Once the system is brought back online, what you missed during the downtime will be available to you.

What can you do to check new photos from contacts in the meantime?

Well, the simplest thing is to visit your contacts list and check some out. But you can also utilize RSS, for public/safe content. RSS feeds for your individual contact's pages will still be available (but will not be for your aggregate contact list). For those unfamiliar, RSS is basically a feed, or list, of new content that is published (RSS explanation). If you are running Firefox, you can go to their photopage, and click the RSS icon, which will then show a confirmation page asking if you want to subscribe to that page. This is the icon behind the RSS link:

We know that's not the ideal solution for this, but for those so inclined, it's a temporary option. We'll provide updates as we have information to share. Thanks for your patience while we get this sorted out.

(Edited in after the main fix...)
GustavoG has a really nifty tool that he updated during this problem that you might like to try out as an alternate way to check contacts photos. You should check it out! :)

----------

Analogous Forum posts and banner links will be added for the other languages soon, we've done a couple so far, thanks for bearing with us on that. :)

Thank you for taking this bold step to solve the problem. Of the five bulleted items the first three will simply continue the status quo anyway; few of us will notice a difference.

I appreciate the fact that Flickr has taken this action to restore service and, more importantly, customer confidence.

Thanks Kevin, I appreciate your efforts.
However, I`d like to call your attention to another problem that apparently hasn`t been considered before.
When I check my contacts` recent additions, I start from the most recent one and go back (about 10 pages every day from my round 400 contacts) until I find a photo I had already seen the day before. Since this takes a little time, once I`m finished I go back to my first page to check if any new photos have been posted in the meantime. If none are there, I assume that I have seen all the recent contacts' photos. WRONG!!! Because (and this happens all the time) the new more recent photos don`t always appear up front, on the first page, but are inserted internally in the middle of the recent photos list (say, for example, on page 3). Now, in this case, of course, I cannot avoid missing them, unless I browse al my contacts` recent photo pages again, one by one.

Luigi, use RSS. By using an appropriate feed reader you can mark items as read when you’ve seen them and just look at those that you haven’t seen yet.

Or reduce your number of contacts.

The fact that new photos are appearing somewhere in the middle of the “photos from your contacts” stream has two reasons: first, the database update issue which is being resolved now, and second, the fact that it is ordered by upload date (many people first upload their photos as private, then add stuff like description and tags, and then make the photos publicly visible). So, use RSS.
