iansand and Civilised Explorer: I'm digging into it right now but it looks like the disappearing upload button may still happen if you're not signed in when the photos you sent using "Send to Flickr..." are ready. That's not to say that you're not signed in but that the Uploadr hasn't finished checking your stored credentials. I'm reworking the order of things it has to do on startup to address this issue.

I was told to post my problem here

So what happens is:

you use flash-based upload page or flickr uploadr (any version since 2.4) and the progress goes immediately to 100%, then stuck, then says there's a problem with connection and that pictures cannot be uploaded, (in flash-based the progress simply freezes there with no promotion) .

But in fact, if you go to your album, 90% chance you will see a few pictures that have actually been uploaded successfully (under uploadr 2.x), or the first one, (under 3.0 or flash-based).

Interestingly, a Firefox extension, fotofox, almost never had this problem.

This problem ALWAYS occur to me under XP or Vista, under many different ISPs and network environments and different computers. The only likely invariable is that where the problem occurs, there tend to be relatively a little bit slower network speed.
(It's unbelievable, it's like the only invariable is MYSELF)

I had sought help here before, although no one gave me any direct solution, somebody recommended fotofox as a temporal solution which did work well.

But as flickr uploadr upgrades more and more, I'm desperate to switch back to the official uploadr, but this problem has made the uploadr completely NOT USABLE.

Please somebody help me out here! Many thanks.

When I add pics (either by drag & drop or by using the "Add" button), I get this :

With the console saying :

At first, I had installed 3.0 on a preinstalled 2.5 Uploadr. I then uninstalled and reinstalled brand new v3.0.2, but problem still remains.

What could be wrong ?

Another bug that I noticed is that after added photos to a batch, I select them all to assign them to a same set & put in some common tags. I change the window to copy some tags from a text file & when I come back to Uploadr window, the tags that I assigned to all photos just a few seconds ago are gone!! I tried this thing 2-3 times to see if that was one off incident but no, this problem is very much there everytime.

rcrowley says:

mll: I agree with oledoe, it looks to me like your photos have some strange characters in their EXIF or IPTC title fields. Have you tried adding any images that do not have titles/tags/descriptions embedded? I'm still working out some of the strange ways that metadata is stored inside image files.

Da Silent Knight: There is a bug in 3.0.2 that causes batch titles/tags/descriptions to disappear. What's actually happening is that the Uploadr is saving that information out to all the images and then to a file on disk once each minute. None of your metadata has been lost. This issue will be addressed with the next incremental release. This is the issue many have experienced with metadata fields suddenly clearing themselves.

pureguava: So far you've not authorized Flickr Uploadr 3.0 to access your account. When you start up Uploadr, click the blue Sign In button. When it's ready to authorize you, a prompt will come up offering to take you to the Flickr website. This will open your web browser. Go there and follow the instructions. When you're done on the website, come back to Uploadr and click the big READY! button. Then you'll be all set!

WeeScot and LexnGer: The Picasa issue is a known one. If you use the Uploadr to add the titles to your photos you should have no problems.

myfear: obviously I don't work there, but I can say from observation that one way the Flickr team adopts new features (and occasionally even hires new people) is when someone simply goes out, does something, and shows that it's useful in practice.

Given that the community of people hacking on the uploadr is likely to be fairly small, I don't think anything 'official' is really required. Hack away, join a group like 'flickr hacks' to show off what you've done, and go from there. That would be my take on it, anyway.

Guy- other connections may work fine, but if there is a routing problem specific between you and our upload servers, it may cough up that error. I can see a routing drop off where latency goes way up on some hops on NTL's network and then on the last hop there is about 30-35% of the traffic lost before it's filtered out on it's way to you. If the route back to us is the same, that may be what the problem is there.

jaberella: The Internet connection suggestion in that dialog is there because large uploads (like photos) are more sensitive to network issues than your average webpage. I am headed out of the country tomorrow for the week and will not be able to respond to forum posts. I'll be back around New Year and catching up on everything here. Leaving the old post below because I don't like to airbrush history....

3.0.2 would probably be really cool if the "SIGN IN" button did anything. Of course that is better than 3.0 which let me work a long while setting tags and titles and descriptions on 60 pictures before throwing all my work away. At least this release hasn't wasted a lot of my time.

WinXP SP2, Firefox 2.0.0.11 is default browser.

I am getting the boink issue repeatedly too, and Houston we definitely do have a problem seems like I'll be back to 2.x until the beta testing is finished .:)

All previous 2.X versions worked for me.

Nothing in the console, direct connection (DSL) to the internet no ISP proxies being used. MacOS 10.5. Rebooted the machine as well.

Interesting thing is it is always at the exact same percentage point, version is 3.0.2.

Update: I removed all the photos added a single one back from the set with no tags or sets etc. and that worked. It would seem like an uploader problem. I have also tested 2 photos one private and one public and that seems ok. Hope this helps

Problems with 3.0.2, using Win XP, SP1:

(1) It keeps signing me out and needing authorisation every time I want to upload something. Older Uploadr versions automatically signed in upon loading.

(2) When it asks for permission yet again, clicking OK loads I.E. rather than opening a page in Firefox which I'm using at the time. Is this something to do with I.E. being my default browser?

(3) The Upload button keeps disppearing, especially when I right-click a file and select "Send to Flickr". After signing-in (again!!) the Upload button still isn't shown and I have to click +Add and then close that window to get the button to appear.

No other bugs to report and apart from the above I'm happy with 3.0.2.

Downloaded the new uploader yesterday - seemed very good indeed. Like the way that you can get it all ready B4 uploading BUT
today I tried it for the first time.

1. Installing the new software automatically knocked off the old one from my computer so I didn't have the option of "still using the old one"

2. Clicking add defaulted each time to "My Picture" altho I store my potential uplods in I folder I call "Flickr pics" so each time I had to re-set it to that folder.

3. Most annoying - it was stilll uploading 30 minutes later with no result, so I cancelled it and the re-intalled the previous uploader.

Any answers??

It's no good if it is going to take forever - I only added 7 pics.

I know it's not a problem on my end, as Azureus consistently uploads at around 90 KB/s without interruption (not while the Uploadr is running, of course).

@Harry_S "Can we go back to the old version?"

The old version is still available, on the Tools page. It uses the same directory path in a default installation. You can change this by selecting a new folder when you install, and upload into that. But, a post I made earlier may apply for your situation as well from some routing tests I am doing specific to your access point. You are in a very similar NTL network as the member who was having a similar problem, above my post. But do let us know if you see a change using the older version.

Sometimes the caret (text cursor) vanishes from the input boxes, like tags when entering text. Usually its not a big problem, but when you need to go to a certian position to insert or delete text its annoying as you need to click with the mouse to set the caret position. Sometimes then the caret returns upon mouse repositioning.

Here are some issues I've noticed with Uploadr 3:

Attempts to upload large batches of photos inevitably fail several times, requiring babysitting and multiple "Try again" clicks. When this happens, none of the photos get placed in the appropriate sets. It's possible that Uploadr also loses the descriptions, tags, and other metadata, but I haven't tested that.

If the "Try again" message comes up while I'm in the process of choosing, rotating, tagging, etc. more photos to upload (a cool new feature of Uploadr 3), the "Try again" button includes the new (incompletely annotated) photos. I think when that happened to me recently, Uploadr also crashed after the upload completed.

Is there an official place to report bugs or request/vote for features? It would be nice if there were a bug database I could search to avoid reporting known bugs. I could search the forums, but that's a lot of noise to sift through.

Woody: The words [Official Topic] in this, The Help Forum, aren't enough for you? ;)

This IS the official place to report it. Try searching this very thread. Although multiple reports of the same bug may themselves be helpful.

It would be very cool if flickr could detect duplicate images (ideally before uploading) and provide some options (including "upload anyway" and "add to other sets").

Duplicate checking wouldn't need to be fancy (i.e. able to detect resized images as duplicates) for it to be useful to me. Comparing file hashes would be sufficient. To avoid generating hashes on all previously uploaded files, you could pre-filter on size (and hash files of the same size) and other easily accessible metadata.

It seems like the savings in storage and bandwidth would be worth it.

Brock,

This thread doesn't provide all the bug tracking functionality that I would like. For example, I can't easily track the status of a bug (i.e. is it being worked on, has it been fixed in a particular release, are they having trouble reproducing it, etc.), and in a forum I'm more likely to be flamed by other flickr users.

If this forum is all that is available, it's what I will use, but to answer your question, "Official Topic" was not sufficient to communicate to me that this was the only means of reporting bugs or requesting features.

Some positivity your way.

I'm always one for minimalism and simplicity. Old Flickr uploadr served me very well despite its very simplistic nature.

But yes - version 3. It's everything I thought I wanted and not a drop more, and for this I LOVE it.

My fave feature is the ability to start a new batch whilst continuing to upload the last batch, and then the addition of the latest batch to the queue.

Brilliant, simple, elegant.

Another Uploadr 3 issue:
If I select some images then rotate them, then select a few others, the images being rotated are each re-selected as their individual rotate operations complete. This effectively prevents further tagging/rotating/describing operations while I wait for the images to rotate.

Another Uploadr 3 issue:
It is not possible to select photos until their thumbnails are displayed. This is a problem adding a large number of photos to the same set, since I don't need to see the thumbnails, but have to wait for them anyway.

The multi-threadedness of Uploadr 3 is very nice, and I look forward to being able to take better advantage of it as these quirks get worked out.

Here's a screenshot of the errors I am getting, as requested earlier by rcrowley. I tried to upload 3 photos, the first three error lines appear when dragging them into the uploadr. They then appear only as exclamation marks in the uploadr. The following three lines appear when I click the upload button. At this time, some of the exclamation marks disappear. Just like with mll, WeeScot and LexnGer this problem appears when the images has Picasa added tags (or keywords). Things seem to work fine if you don't add them.

rcrowley, you say it's a known issue. That's good to know. But I hope it is being looked into, thanks. The solution you suggest (of using the uploadr for tags) is not an option for me. I want the metadata to be stored in the picture, including the copies I keep on my own harddrive.

What I find strange though, is that I seem to be the only one who has not been able to to use any of the previous versions of the uploadr either.

Thanks for replying (see below) but when I click the sign in button
and the prompt comes up offering to take me to the flickr website my web-browser doesn't open up. That is the problem I tried to explain in my first post. Thanks anyway, I'll come back to 3.0 when it can open my browser for authorisation.

"pureguava: So far you've not authorized Flickr Uploadr 3.0 to access your account. When you start up Uploadr, click the blue Sign In button. When it's ready to authorize you, a prompt will come up offering to take you to the Flickr website. This will open your web browser. Go there and follow the instructions. When you're done on the website, come back to Uploadr and click the big READY! button. Then you'll be all set!"

No problems on this side, I like the way the "batching" works now.

BUT, and I find this particulary annoying: why is there a default text in the photo description box? in my case "OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA", since I shoot with olympus (I assume it grabs this from the exif).
If I add text:
- selecting all images
- typing some text
the text is added to the above description!
Is there a way to disable this ugly default text? I couldn't find anything in the preferences for it!?

thanks!

Ian Tindale  Pro User  says:

I really don't understand how to use this. I've installed it. I've run it. There's absolutely no way of selecting any specific album, any specific event, any individual photo, or at the very least level of basic functionality expected, any way of selecting just the flagged photos. It seems to simply not see any of the thousands of photos that are definitely there, at all, whether iPhoto is running or not.

On the other hand, the '1001' software, which I find hideous to use, actually does work - it allows me to select just the 'flagged' photos to upload, preserving keywords etc, but in a comparatively clumsy sequence of actions.

I was expecting this flickr uploader to be slicker, but it actually has no functionality at all - can't see any of the photos that exist, can't select anything, can't perform the job. Pretty useless.

Running Mac OS X 10.5.1, the only issue I've come across thus far is the disappearing metadata and tags for batches. It's VERY annoying to be entering data, pause for a second or two and have it disappear, being entered incompletely.

Otherwise, the app seems to run very smoothly and effectively for me.

I do prefer the old interface (v2.3.1) with Batch and Photo tabs for entering batch and photo specific tags. I also wish there was a way to adjust the size of the photo previews. The previews rather small and makes it hard to distinguish one photo from another if they are similar.

I really like the ability to drag and drop the order the pics will be uploaded. A very nice touch.

Thanks for coming out with a new version for OS X and for your continued work in providing free and flexible uploading tools.

Hi all. I'm using Mac OS 10.4 on a PPC iBook G4. I just downloaded Mac Uploadr 3.0.2, and get the "Bonk" problem as described above, with the error "Houston, we have a problem."

I downloaded jUploadr, and it uploads just fine. I like the control the Flickr Uploadr has, and would love to use it instead. Any solutions pending?

Nathan Cooper  Pro User  says:

I like the interface, but there is a bug when batch updating Title, Description and Tag fields.

With multiple photos selected, as you begin entering text, the text will disappear without any warning or indication that the text was added.

My first thought was that it was deleted, so I entered the text again. It wasn't until I uploaded my photos that I found the first entry was added as was the second duplicate entry in the Description and Tag fields. Afterwards I had to remove the duplicate items from those fields.

I hope this will be corrected and that the text entered in those fields will remain displayed when batch editing (assuming it's the same for all in the selection), so that you will know what has been entered.

oledoe: Thanks for pushing for the Picasa issue - I just tried to upload photos for the first time since 'upgrading' Uploadr and have exactly the same problem. I also don't see using the Uploadr to tag as an option because I want a local copy of my tags and descriptions.

Just so you know, I was able to use the previous version of the Uploadr (which I'm going back to now), although I did have occasional problems with it breaking partway through a batch and pretending it had finished. Oh, and I had problems to do with sets as well, I don't think it would ever add to existing sets or create new ones.

Anybody else seeing slow uploads (Leopard/OS X)? I tried 3.0.2, that was failing all the time and was slow. I went back to 2.3.1 and now my uploads either fail or are too slow to ever complete. I've now tried to upload one 8 MB picture for almost an hour. Previously similar update took maybe 2-3 minutes, max.

Is there any way to check if Flickr is experiencing some service issues or should I troubleshoot my end of the cable? All other net stuff works perfect so I really doubt that something is wrong at this end...

Another 3.0.2 issue:
When selecting multiple photos using ctrl-click, if you accidentally ctrl-click in the space between photos, all selected photos are de-selected. I would expect that from a normal left-click, but not a ctrl-click.

That might seem like a really minor issue, but if you're selecting images for rotation from a set of 300, that one mis-click can result in a fair amount of lost work.

This would be less of an issue if you could select smaller groups for rotation, then begin selecting the next group. (Unfortunately there's another bug, which I reported earlier, that makes that impractical.)

"All other net stuff works perfect"

This is a common misunderstading. :) Every website you view takes a different network path to get from A (the website, and in this case the upload target) to Z (you), and can be different from Z to A. There are usually several other transition networks which neither your ISP or Flickr has any control of in getting data to you. I can tell you that from this end, eunetip.net which feeds your ISP is dropping a load of network traffic betwixt us. Those problems usually go away, if in fact, the badness is the same on the way back to us from you.

Thanks Woody and all, Richard will appreciate the input upon his return. :)

my long awaiting feature for flickr uploadr and still don't have it - integration with iPhoto!

flickr uploadr is always the best looking interface design i can find on the web. this newest flickr uploadr 3 look even better, easier to use. but when or will iPhoto integration be added into it? it will be great that those name, description and keywords from iPhoto can be automatically loaded into flickr uploadr. just select an album or event of iPhoto right inside flickr uploadr, and upload right away, isn't that great?

1001 do exactly what i want, but the interface design is poor.
