***EVERYONE WHO HAS RECEIVED MESSAGES ACCUSING THEM OF POSTING PORN OR OF ACCUSING SOMEONE OF BEING A PAEDOPHILE..............PLEASE READ THROUGH THIS DISCUSSION !!!!
Your account has not been hijacked as a result of any of this.
You have done nothing wrong.
Flickr knows you have done nothing wrong.
Please ignore any threats of being reported to any authorities.
The owner of the account(s) have not blocked you, it is the 'person' who has hijacked their accounts that is likely doing so.
The owners are almost certainly an innocent party in this.
Please calm down and don't worry :-))

I have received the same or similar e-mails. All sent at 7:34 on Sept 18th. I am also accused of leaving insulting comments or accusing them of being pedophiles. I have left them in my inbox for further investigation but I would appreciate an update as to what one can do for this not to happen again.

Folks- I think we got this batch of guff scrubbed from your FlickrMail.
No one is really accusing you of anything, rest assured- we know this is bogus. What is happening is someone who has been able to steal user IDs and passwords to log in and send this junk.
How are they getting IDs and passwords? Please read this about phishing.
In a nutshell, someone visits a website outside of Flickr and is tricked to entering their ID and password, which is then recorded by the phisher. In some rarer cases they may install a backdoor application to record the same. They then use that ID and password to login to that account on Flickr and send these disturbing messages.
We'd love to be able to say we can prevent this 100% of the time, but the reality is that it is easy to fall prey for people to get tricked by these scams and hand over their ID and password. Dealing with this is an ongoing issue and we take this assault on the Flickr Community very seriously and are sorry that this has happened to you.

Whoops, I deleted the 3 emails I had received, I didn't even want to leave them there or see them.
So - since the user's haven't actually blocked me, why doesn't it give me the ability to comment on their photos? Seems like I've been fully blocked. You think the people who are sending out the emails have the ability to do that?
Craziness.
Update Kevin: So, all we have to do is change our passwords to stop it for now? :o)

The same thing just happened to me - I received 3 messages saying that the member was going to call the cops and another accusing me of posting porn on their photo - I never even went to that member's stream.
When I tried to reply to the message - my email was blocked.
I do not need this kind of thing happening to my account - I never post porn images and never will - I need to be assured that my account is not compromised and that I am not going to be accused of this type of activity again.

I have never given my ID or Password to any internet site outside of Flickr - there is a security breech and something needs to be done or soon we will have our account seriously compromised.
The Flickr folks need to see if anyone is posting photos with malicious code attached - there may be a trojan horse type of thing being done via this community - where a photo is presented on someone's computer and it has code that runs in the background to install something on the users pc. This could be very bad news!
Help us all by thoroughly checking this out Please!

Hi Ray- Please take a moment re-read my post again if you can- it's the people who own the accounts that the email came from which is the problem- they are the ones that followed the bogus links and dropped their ID and passwords.
These are not malicious trojans attached to image files or code embedded in Flickr- they are simple offsite links left on photopages which encourage people to visit a fake award site or somewhere for "private photos" that then ask them to enter in ID and passwords- we know about these links, and we clean Flickr of them when they are reported to us.

I, too, received three Flickr mails with horrible accusations. I cannot tell you how upset I was. Another of my wonderful Flickr friends helped me through this mess. The 3 messages were automatically removed. I'm wondering if I should post the three 'supposed' Flickr members that sent these messages? I checked and they have blocked me even though I can get in to see their site, but cannot send them Flickr Mail. Should these names be made public, or are these folks innocent bystanders?

They're innocent bystanders; check out the announcement at the top of the page - the accounts that sent you the FlickrMails are being used by people other than the owners.
If you post their account details, they'll receive a flood of abusive FlickrMails, when they haven't done anything wrong. The same thing happened to a Flickr firend of mine a few months ago - she was so upset by the nasty e-mails that she immediately deleted her account, and won't come back...
But, it's great that you asked before posting their details - a lot of people wouldn't have...

It doesn't help that yahoo tends to require you to keep entering your password all the time. Once your used to that another Enter your details here page is nothing out-of-the-ordinary.

Ok, I think we have the last several incidents that were reported taken care of.
A reminder again- please do not post the identifying information about who sent you these messages to the Forum here. Please use Report Abuse (link at the bottom of the page) and give us the specific information there. The members who the messages appear to be from actually are not the ones sending you the messages.
Those of you who got these, please do understand we do not in any way believe you are sending these.

This happened to me, today, as well -- three different emails, sent from different IDs, all sent at 12:34 pm 20 September 2007.
It's quite distressing to receive messages like these (and, worse, not be able to reply to them), but I'm glad to know that the Flickr staff knows what's really going on.

"................ I hope flickr will solve it fast and give us the real explanation. "
Did you actually read any of this discussion apart from the posts from those, like yourself, that received the messages ?
Please read the very first post with a link to a staff member's explanation as to what has happened.
Along with many more explanations as to what is happening.
It is not the fault of Flickr, but that of innocent parties being duped into handing over their account sign in details.
And it is the real explanation.......really.
It has happened before and will very likely happen again.
It's not nice, I know. But this current rash of hijacking will be sorted out soon. Until the next time ;-)

I'm sorry, Stevekin, if it sounded like I was accusing flickr, did not mean to. English is not my native language.
What I wanted to say was, I hope this problem on flickr will be solved fast. And that a final explanation would be given.
Actually I did read every single part of this discussion thoroughly, and there were many suggestions along the line. So I wasn't sure if the explanation in the very first post was the real final explanation.
I am very fond of flickr and all the wonderful people here. Let's keep it a good place to share photos and positive thinking:)

It is not Flickr or Yahoo that is 'letting' it happen Andrew.
It is the owners that have, one way or another, 'handed' over their sign in details (to their Flickr accounts).
They didn't mean to, they were phished.
There really isn't a lot Flickr or Yahoo can do to legislate for someone who hands their info over, innocently or not.
If accounts are being set up by ne'er do wells to send stuff like this, then that is something Flickr can do something about. Terminate the accounts as soon as they become aware of them.
And a lot of that depends on 'us' being vigilant and reporting wrong doings.

It should be simple:
Andrew you know the messages are spam and that they'll be deleted by staff in a little time, don't you? Then don't read them!
If you go to your FlickrMail and see them and know them for what they are, then step back and follow with what you were doing. If they reach your external email just delete them.
edit to add: and if you're so pissed off, just block them.

Andrew - the person doing this is after attention. Probably a big reason why you keep getting more, is they like seeing your reaction. We saw yesterday that the person is definitely reading the forum, and so every time you post here all upset, he probably enjoys it.
Believe me, flickr staff are doing all they can. But you need to stop panicking, and maybe don't check your flickrmail for a while. Every time you come here and post it seems you get more mails. He's doing it to get to you.

could flickr staff please response to case354429 related to these emails?
i got about 10 of these emails and reported them via the abuse link. after i reported them, my account got locked down. i thought the sender accounts were compromised, not the recipient accounts. unless my original account sent and received the same type of emails? doesn't make sense to me.
since my account was disable and no one has responded to my flickr support help request, i have to create another y! account to post here asking for a response.

case354429 - just out of curiosity, did you recently click on a link taking you to a "private photo" that you had to log in to see? Besides the accounts this person probably had in holding, there have been a few who've followed a link recently and entered in their login details (to a fake site, unfortunately - flickr would not ask you to re-log in to see private photos) which gave the phisher access.
Posted 57 months ago.

nope. i'm not the type who likes to see private photos anyway.
i ran full system scan with symantec antivirus - even in safe mode - and it found nothing on my pc. i also run blackice on my system. so i'm quite confident that my home system has not been compromised. my flickr photostream appears to be in good order. so based on what i know, it is unlikely that my home pc has been compromised. if flickr staff believes that my original account was phished, they should have very good reason(s). it just doesn't make sense to me right now how that is possible.
edit: just to be clear, i don't need my flickr account access to be restored. that's the last thing i want to do. i just need some more info from flickr staff to get to the bottom of this.

LandonsMom06, make sure to use another computer to change your password for access to Flickr. Don't use the computer where you got these e-mails that accuse you of any wrongdoings. Also, if you can, do virus and spyware checks on your computer. And like Stevekin says to those being accused, your accounts are safe. I have never received such e-mails myself and hopefully won't. If I get any questionable messages from certain Flickr members, I block those persons. And for non-Flickr members, any questionable e-mail showing up in my GMail inbox gets moved to the Spam folder and then that folder is immediately emptied.

Yep, happened to me too. Same four exact emails. All blocked replies.
I'm wondering if the blocking is a two prong approach for them to keep the infected users ignorant of the fact, and also to phish more user accounts using those replies.
Anyway, thought I'd report it here as well as to "Report Abuse".

Sadly, users who hand over their login details and passwords to phishers are the problem, and it's leading to distressing results for innocent people like Wingdingo and others.

Ths just happened to me -- and I know I haven't responed to any phishers. So not sure that the users are at fault, here. Seems to be a pretty broad problem.

Reading through some of the replies here it seems some people still don't understand the nature of the problem.
The accounts that are sending the mails are the ones that have been compromised.
The accounts that are receiving the mails are generally safe, at least as far as just receiving a mail is concerned, obviously I cannot comment on any other actions from the users.
Don't panic guys, flickr do as much as they can to sort things out, but the real responsibility lies with you, ensuring you keep your own login details secret...

Just happened to me too. Eek! How nasty!
Ok, so I guess the only thing to do is get the word out via my groups and maybe a short blurb at top of my profile page.

Ok, Addicted to tea, you can do anything you want. But I do believe cancelling your account and leaving flickr would be a little excessive. If you're going to do anything online, you just have to learn how to deal with things like this. Flikr is good at keeping us informed of what to do and not do, and as to what is happening and what they're doing about it. Just my opinion, of course, but I say give flickr a chance. Whatever you run into here, you are entirely likely to run into elsewhere.

For the record. I've just recently (earlier today 06/10) received four similar messages. Have reported the matter to flickr.

Also, if you can, hide your e-mail address from your profiles just to be safe unless you already have your profiles set to not show your e-mail address.

Is there nothing that can be done to keep porn off flickr? I did a general search for something innocent last evening and a real big collections of hard core porn pictures came up and I nearly got sick as I realised I could have been a child doing a simple search and bang (pardon the pun) there it was, all on show. I've flagged what I could without having to see too much but it ruins one's day!
