It's a good idea, but it would be nice to be able to browse the apps in categories with some sort of descriptions beside them. In the current display, many of the names are cut off, and even those that aren't are pretty ambiguous. There's no real way of knowing which ones you might want to know more about.
The view when you search is better, but that assumes you know what you're searching for, which isn't the case if you just want to see what's out there.

It would be really great if the "Apps you're using" linked to the App page itself, rather than the off-Flickr site. I have some apps listed there that I'd like to comment on, but I can't get to the App page from that list.

I agree with what andyscamera said about browsing the apps. It's visually very busy, and ultimately, you don't glean much information from that grouping.
I (stupidly) spent a lot of time looking for a search apps feature not realizing that (a) "Explore Apps" is a search box; and (b) the regular search box at the top of the page was showing "search the App Garden." I think this is because the design is so visually busy, it just slipped under my radar.
I just like to see a little cleaner interface; there's quite a lot to use and it's all crammed into a very small space.

Very cool update, this is like thank you note to all the developers out there. It makes me want to polish up my private apps and release them.
Some feedback:
* If the application has a public page in App Garden then it would be nice to have links on "Apps You're Using" page, right now they link off-site
www.flickr.com/services/auth/list.gne
* It's nice to have "Favorite Apps" page, but it is confusing and useless because it's unreadable. www.flickr.com/services/apps/faves/
Much better layout would be if it's similar to "Apps by..." page.

When clicking on the goto website button, you get a warning message which includes the following:
"...you will be taken to a site that isn't reviewed, controlled, or endorsed by Flicker."
Whilst the warning is a good idea and I get that you don't control the external website, is it true that you're not reviewing them before letting the app into the App Garden?
Surely the fact that they're in the App Garden is an endorsement itself?

i don't think so really. my understanding is that pretty much every app can end up in the app garden if a proper page is created for it.

I like that idea of adding some kind of "watch"... tracking updates would be hard... but perhaps it triggers new comments on that app to bubble up in your recent activity. (faving and app might be the same as saying watch?)
Also the ability to "watch" a particular developer... and get notification of their new apps. An RSS feed for the "other apps by this developer" might be the way to go there. In that vain... an RSS feed for the comments on an app page might satisfy some of the "get update notifications" need. Maybe two versions, all comments, comments by app author only?

I created a page for my App Shattered (which is now completed and going to be submitted to the App Store soon) and I could see it listed before when I searched the associated tags, but now it's mysteriously vanished from the App Garden: I can't find it except through my own user profile. chuanchihchou, sorry about the lateness of our update. That's not in the search because of a change we've made to the App Garden.
We've been looking at the apps being created and made public so far and in addition to the great ones (and there are many) it looks like there are some being made without an image, description, or URL filled out and some where the key is for an app not developed by that member. (i.e. If you are using an open source photo album app that you didn't develop on your website that requires you to get your own key.)
We are going to make a few changes to the garden to try and make the results more useful. The first is that the search only returns results from Apps we've noticed (of which there are quite a few and more being added all the time).
This doesn't change anything else about your apps, they are still public and available from your account or anywhere else you want to link from, they just aren't in the search automatically when you make them public. This may not be permanent but it's something we've implemented at the moment.
We're working on a couple other things to make the results more relevant which we hope to release shortly. When we do we'll update in this thread with more information.

That kind of sucks because you know that there is app called something-something, but if you search it, the result is empty. Even, if that app is in your "Apps You're Using" page, you still can't find the app page.
Apps Garden just took a huge step backwards, uncool.
There must be better ways to filter out unwanted apps.
I agree with clickykbd, RSS feeds would be nice, app feeds for developer, tag, app comments. RSS feed for noticed apps.

OK...I haven't gone much beyond the basic Flickr experience but I have used Dopiaza's excellent stuff, and BigHugeLabs and so on. I have a few API-partner type sites authorised to access my stream.
When I go to the Apps Garden, there's nothing in the main part of the page except one random "App we've noticed".
When I click on the "More please" button (which I assumed would give me more randomly selected apps to browse through), thumbnails of some new apps appear on the bottom right hand side of the page. But when I hover the cursor over them they jump about and reorder themselves.
It just looks really untidy and not at all Flickr-tidy like I'm used to. Are they meant to do this?

In light of search not including all public apps automatically... I do agree that the "apps your using" list should behave more like the pages "more apps by this author" and include the thumbnails and app garden links etc, in addition to the permissions bits and external links.
It also seems like we've moved to a two phase approval system for apps now. First, request your key (depending on the nature it may require approval), second build it and list it publicly... which may require an additional step of approval to get in the app garden completely.
Granted "unnoticed" apps still function fine... but the app garden in theory removes the need to publicize your apps on your own site or other ways... which is a core aspect of releasing something. So now there is an approval step ("sort of") for that.
Better auditing and approval of apps out there has been a long requested feature, but this mode of doing so kinda feels like an afterthought? (Just opinion).
It does feel like "black-listing" or "blocking" individual apps and their keys could be a logical next step (re: personalized auditing)... preferences/defaults could be set to deal with non-public apps/keys as well. If for some reason an app doesn't meet your "noticing" criteria... seems reasonable we should individually be able to say "no thanks" to allowing our photos to be delivered to an api key. This would encourage better development practices and enforce respect of usage and licenses.... which has been a long standing complaint against many misguided app developers.

I'm hesitant to say +1 to a blacklist for the following reason. A blacklist, means that the user (not the API developer) constantly has to be checking to see what's out there and ever vigilant to add new apps and/or developers to their blacklist. Or maybe I'm misunderstanding what is being requested.
Posted 31 months ago.

No that's about right. And yes, there is a vigilance necessary, but to my mind, it's better than no tool at all. For most people, it's for the capability of blocking an API use once they've become aware of it. So yes there could be all sorts of API uses out there happening without our knowledge, but when one comes to light that we don't agree with, it would be great to be able to block them.
In light of the new definition of "non commercial" in the API terms, I think an ability to block is more important than ever.

But wouldn't a white list be better? No API could access your photos or account until you've placed it on a white list? So you don't have to search for all applications, only those you're interested in. (Or do we already have this functionality?) It seems that right now, there are many API apps that can access my photos, regardless of whether I've authorized the app or not.

Hey there RubyMae, you mention,
It seems that right now, there are many API apps that can access my photos, regardless of whether I've authorized the app or not.
If you have not opted out of the API by selecting the last two check boxes on this page:
www.flickr.com/account/prefs/optout/?from=privacy
Then your public photos can be accessed by the API without you needing to authorize your account. Of course, we do expect developers to conform to any privacy or permissions on the photos, as per the API's Terms of Use.
You could also opt-out of the API, but then authorize yourself to certain API applications, so that you can use those services to see your photos there.
So, that's how the system currently works (just wanted to clear up the technicalities) but the feedback is great; we're listening, so if you have it, give it. :)

(Yes, now that you've mentioned it, that's actually how I have my account configured - I've opted out of the API and then authorized certain API accounts. It was why I asked if we already had this functionality; I was having a senior moment. Of course, now that the account settings are multi-tabbed with so many options, it gets really confusing to remember what you are and aren't doing with your account)

ColleenM , api related changes often get little news and excitement. Examples... API results as RSS and those little magic squirrels running around marking up things (machine tags) in the sidebar are damn cool... but hardly any average flickr user knows about that stuff.
Thanks for the update Mike. Showing an app screenshot thumbnail/icon (the primary?) would be cool on the "apps you are using" page too. ;-)
The whole blacklist/whitelist topic has been hashed over numerous times in Flickr Ideas... it just came up here because it now seems like we have a logical interface to put such a mechanism toggle. IMHO whitelisting is not the way to go... even though arguably the "safer" model. It would just remove too much content from developers (from the get go) and diminish the appeal of even trying to write cool applications. I don't feel blacklisting or blocking "as you discover" them would have the same downside though.

@Zyrcster
You -> Your Apps page indeed has this set of links at the top I am after... but I was hoping that they persist across all App Garden pages. Right now they go away when you visit specific apps and only the broad API related links persist.
I was trying to avoid the additional clicks from any given App page.
PS, I'm loving that we now have an easier to find "on flickr" url to refer people to when we are recommending apps/tools! I just did it in an Ideas topic.
PPS, ColleenM, I did read that as a joke actually, just think I went a little overboard with my directed reply and lost that somewhere. ;-)

i noticed a small bug with the app garden search.
when the search gives a multi page list, the "relevant/recent/interesting" sorting option you have chosen seems to get lost when you click to another page in the search results, as it appears to revert back to "relevant" each time.
@Richard, to list all apps in the garden, try this search:
www.flickr.com/services/apps/search/?q=+&sort=recent
according to that search there are approx 106 apps in the garden at the moment.
btw another small bug is that the number of pages of results for the above search is 6, but if you click to page 6, no results are shown

Feature request: Alternative way to add a screenshot to app.
My photostream is only for my photos and I don't want to add screenshots to my "photo gallery".
If upload functionality is too difficult to implement then maybe option for other users to suggest screenshots to me? This would be very cool because this ways other users could show me how they have used my app.

It took me a really long time to find "My API Key" in the new garden.
i finally found it behind a small link on the page that lists the API routines...

Hey there loupiote,
The apps you've made (meaning, your keys), are both linked from the front page of the App Garden here on the right side where it says "Apps by You"
www.flickr.com/services/
As well on on this page, which is linked from the You menu:
www.flickr.com/services/apps/by/me

Thanks for that report, I've opened a ticket on pagination and sorting in searches.

Also, we now think we squashed that layout issue with IE8. Thanks!
