Have a question thou - will click on "i" icon be considered as a view of the photo?
Thanks

Hi @virt_: Right now we are not counting the "i" (info layer) as a view of the photo. The only place we currently count as a view of a photo is the main photo page - where the photo is shown larger and with more context.

Are you aware that clicking the Rhubarb Pie link in the blog produces the following message?
We couldn't find anything matching your search
Would you like to try a search for food, dessert, apple, baking or cake instead?
A few suggestions:
* Check your spelling.
* Try more general words.
* Try different words that mean the same thing.
Not a good advert for the service.

Hi @Nicholas Blake: Good news - you actually can hide your own photos from search results. One of the new features we've added is the "hide" link that appears next to the photographer's name. You'll see it if you click on the "i" icon that appears when you hold your mouse over a photo, or when you use the Details view. You can hide up to 1 photographer from search results, including yourself!

There doesn't appear to be a specific section of 'search' entries in the FAQ. If there isn't one already planned, some that deal with using new features, like hiding a photographer from a search or which search parameters are remembered, might be helpful in the long run.

There are a few things I'd like to see carried over to pool-searches... which seem to have only half of the new niceness.
- Why is "medium" size results not an option in the pool search context?
- Remember result mode state between searches (small , medium, details ) etc. Which seems to be working happily on the general search but not pool searching.

Also...
Flipping between "tags only" and "full text" in the new search will erase/revert your query line if you have not yet done a search against the string. Would be nice if it kept whatever was typed in there at the time.

I wondered where this had gone, and now it's back! I like how it shows more results on a larger browser window. That's great for diving in.
I do with the "More info" button, after clicked, showed the Medium-sized (as in 500x500 max) version of the picture. The current dimensions aren't substantially bigger than the thumbnails.

The new search looks great, actually.
I do have a suggestion though. I find Flickr is an excellent place to source wallpapers - a simple search for "London HDR" brings up plenty of nice photos which make amazing wallpapers. This, for example.
The problem is, with monitors in my house ranging from 1280x800 all the way up to 1920x1200, ideally, I'd like to be able to find wallpapers with an "Original" version available that I can download. Some people allow that (myself included), but other people prevent Original downloads, or simply upload a small version of the photo.
I'm fine with that - there's plenty of choice for wallpaper material anyway, but it would be nice if I could search for photos with an original version available, and nothing else.
Would it be possible to add that in as a feature sometime?

@William
Good advice would be to do an advanced search and tick the appropriate "Creative Commons" license.
A) Many believe (and very validly) you don't have permission to create desktop backgrounds using All Rights Reserved content.
B) Creative Commons uploads always have their original sizes exposed to the public.

When "tag clusters" is a relevant sidebar in the result... there is no way to jump to the nice "clusters page" for a given search.
Example: Panda Search
www.flickr.com/search/?q=panda&w=all
Sidebar can be expanded to show 3 clusters (although there are more). One has to step into a cluster in order to back out to this page:
Panda Tag Clusters
www.flickr.com/photos/tags/panda/clusters/
Seems that could be linked more readily somewhere in the sidebar box for clusters? As cool as the street-art pandas are, I feel bad for the neglected ones at the National Zoo in DC ;-)

Using clickykbd's panda search string, I'm confused when I try to see search results related to the locations.
When I select Philedelphia I get panda photo results. For all of the other suggested locations (Camden NJ, Glouceter NJ, Naceville PA, Pine Crest NJ), there are no photos found. That's odd - I would expect to see something (I have my safety filter set to moderate), otherwise why make the search suggestion?

That's weird. My places list looks like this (safety set to ALL)
Washington, District of Columbia
San Diego, California
Woodley Park, Washington, DC, US
Dublin, DUB
Chengdu, Sichuan
Something fancy being done that affects what places we will see?
edit, even weirder is that my link for Woodley Park related panda photos returns no photos, empty search result. www.flickr.com/search/?q=panda&e=2523456 But all other places did return pandas and panda-like-creatures.
The "place" page for Woodley Park seems pretty sparse of photos too, though it does have all-time-popular tags listed.

@ John© & clickykbd: While I know that ARR images are pretty much "don't use this for anything", I personally think that using it for a wallpaper counts as "fair use", since, really, it's only myself and anyone else who walks into my bedroom that will see the photo being used. Besides, if I ever did link to, say, a screenshot of my desktop, I almost always provide credit with a link. :)
Still, you have a fair point.
And I didn't know that about Creative Commons images, so thanks for the tip!

@William
You're welcome. Also a common misconception about Fair Use relates to attribution/acknowledgment. From the US Copyright Office on Fair Use: Acknowledging the source of the copyrighted material does not substitute for obtaining permission. Also the fact that it is displayed privately has very little bearing, and is not one of the 4 factors in determining fair use. I encourage you to read more, as it is a fascinating subject... but we digress and risk getting way off topic for this thread.

On the CC Advocacy (and Rights education) front...
When not searching within a license already, I would love to see the related sidebar contain a box right at the top that helps searchers choose to further filter by how they intend to use the image (if they intend to use the image).
If helping them choose wizard like fashion is too cluttery, even just a static info box linking to www.flickr.com/creativecommons with appropriate language to steer the searcher.
We have the extra screen space for such things now, educating searchers on this topic while searching could be a huge improvement from the two separate modes previously?

I know I'm probably the only one that cares, but I found myself inconvinienced by the lack of an indication on whether individual photographs are geotagged - at least without clicking on them. Hi LiamCH - we care about geotags, too! Try clicking on the "Details" link at the top of any search results page next to the other View links. That view displays the geo info for photos that are tagged, along with some other relevant bits. Also saves you from having to click on the "i" button on photos if you know that you want to see all of the metadata for all of the results.
Thanks for the feedback everyone - keep it coming!

I don't know which thread to add this feedback to - this one or the one for the new 'help'.
Anyways, with the most recent and seemingly never ending 'how do I get my photos to show up on my TV' thread, I decided to search the FAQ.
The search www.flickr.com/help/faq/search/?q=tv produced the following FAQ response:
Would you like to try a search for topics about television, transvestite, cd, tower or crossdresser instead?
I selected television and got a reply that suggested I search for tv amongst other various words. Basically I was in a loop going nowhere.
So my feedback - whatever engine is being used for searches needs to be tweaked for relevancy, at least. And does there need to be an FAQ for viewing flickr on televisions?

@SF Lighthouse: confused about why Flickr only allows you to only hide 1 photographer from a search
This is something we're considering, so it's good to get the feedback from you and others. We designed and built that feature to be as simple as possible ("just hide this one photographer, please!"), but it may be that hiding a couple/few people would be way more useful. If we do decide to allow searchers to hide more than one photographer it will take us a little time to get the code in place. Thanks for the feedback.
@lalalovie: It's possible that you came across some photos that were not properly moderated. You can click on the Report Abuse link on any photo page to have Flickr staff take a look and the image and flag it properly. Read more about that here.
And lastly but not leastly, picsbymac: that suggested search loop sounds both frustrating and not quite right. I'll let the appropriate people know to see if we can tune up those suggestions a bit. Thanks for letting us know!

Hi Yatzi - we removed the "uploaded on" information in search in an effort to simplify / reduce the amount of text we're showing in the Detail view. The basic thinking is that the date the photo was taken is generally more important than when it was uploaded, at least in the context of search.
I'm not sure why we're displaying "uploaded on" for some photos in search results, but I was able to reproduce it. I'm treating this as a bug and we'll look into it.
I also took note that you miss the uploaded date information from search, and we'll keep track of that.

@pkingDesign - Thanks!
Why do I need uploading date?
I'm regularly searching photos with a specific word for one of my groups. And then I, for example, know that I have looked at all uploaded, recent, photos, until July 22. And start at July 23 next time.
If the photos are sorted in Taken on date I will never see a photo taken on June 15 and uploaded July 23.

I think the new search is great with one exception -- I've gotten into the habit of command-clicking the numbered page links below the search results to open a number of pages in new tabs, and this no longer works.
I can still right-click and select "open in a new tab" and it works fine, but command-clicking the link just loads the new page in the current window.

Hi Yatzi - Sorry that we've made things difficult for you with finding the latest / greatest photos. The case you're describing sounds like something we need to think about a little. In the mean time, I'd suggest trying out advanced search: www.flickr.com/search/advanced/ . If you look in the "Search by date" section you'll see a menu allowing you find images either *taken* or *uploaded* before / after a certain date or between specific dates. Here's a sample search from a rather nice redwood forest: www.flickr.com/search/?q=muir+woods&d=taken-20090401
We'll do some thinking about what dates we show, but perhaps advanced search will give you some more precision in your searches.
Artificial Memory - That's for letting us know about the problem you're seeing with command+click. That trick doesn't work when you're viewing results in the Small size, but it does work if you switch to medium. Check out the links for different view options just below the Search button.
The Small view uses some special coding to make the next page of photos load quickly, which has the unfortunate side effect of making command+click not work on the numbered page links. We may not be able to easily fix that, but it will work in the other views.
Thanks for the feedback!

There's one other thing that bothers me a bit but I'm not sure if it is fixable. When viewing the detailed view of photos, they seem too crowded in the way that an extra line space between each photo would probably make it look a lot better. I remember that the old search had a fairly good space between each photo which helped distinguish each one. The new search kind of blurs them all together.

Perhaps the results should show (and be sortable on) the date type searched upon when using advanced to narrow against one or the other? Otherwise display the default minimal date details?

I'll take a look SF Lighthouse. I think we kept the spacing between photos in the Detail view the same as in old search, but its possible that we changed it unintentionally. Different searches will vary because of different amounts of metadata, of course...
If I'm reading you right, clickykbd, it sounds like you're suggesting that we display Date Uploaded if you search by upload date, and Date Taken if you search by date taken. That's sounds like a good idea to me - should have thought of that when I removed Date Uploaded. I'll chat with Scott and see if we can sneak that change in there. Otherwise we'll keep track of it and try to implement it soon. Thanks!

How do you filter out a user when you do a search? I can't find any kind of "exclude user" option.

Click on the "i" at the bottom right of a photo. After the person's name in the pop-up box is a link "hide".

I absolutely love the new search features and layout. What I would love even more is if these features and layout could be carried over to group photo pools. It would be really great to be able to choose the size you want to view group pool photos in and maybe be able to organize them by more than just top five contributors. There could be similar group suggestions on the side as well.

@Maclaine Diemer: I very much agree that a medium sized view for group pool viewing / searching would be good. I have done some talking with Mr Schiller, developer extraordinaire, about adding a medium sized view into group pool search results. Hopefully we'll be able to turn that on in the next month (sorry that I can't be more specific). We haven't talked as much about changes to pages within group pools, but we may do something in there if we can squeeze it into another project. Thanks for the suggestions!

I hate the new search page....i have to constantly move the page down to move to the next page whenever I do a photo search here and the monitor size and using full screen does not make any difference here.
Also, is there a way to block photos from being seen from people you have blocked here? Some of my photo searches in the past is clogged with not related photos and I have blocked those, but would like to have the option of when you block somebody here, those pictures of theirs also do not show up, as long as they are blocked.
I prefer the older search style here.

On Flickr, blocking has nothing to do with making photos visible or not. If someone blocks you, you can still search for and view all of their public images.

if would be nice if the new search result page could ALWAYS display the "number of items found".
currently it only displays the number of item found if there are more than 26 (i.e. more than 1 page).

@pkingDesign staff says:

i am against that, because it defeats the "noindex" metatag for members who don't want their images indexed by search engines.
that's because flickr does not prevent access to their search pages by robots (e.g. with robots.txt), so a lot of flickr search URL's are indexed by google and other search engines, and they end-up in google image, with images from members that do not want their images indexed (and have the noindex on their pages).
medium-size images in flickr search result pages would be ok if:
1) flickr put the noindex metatag on every search result page that show one image with noindex on its photo-page
2) flickt would block all search pages from indexing using robots.txt

Love the new search but still curious when you do the "panda search", why is the "most interesting" photo NOT of a panda? ( I know the reason, but help me make sense of it?)
