[Official Topic] New Global Navigation Bar -- Bugs

Flickr Staff

Thea Lamkin says:

Hey all!

As we've announced in the blog, we'll be gradually introducing a new global navigation bar to all of you! (If you haven't seen it yet, just wait a day or so.)

Please let us know here if you notice anything breaky, funky, or untoward with this change. As usual, please include the browser and operating system you're using in your descriptions, along with versions for each. Enjoy!

All the details in today's blog post!

Where's the option to search one's tags? It's disappeared. I hope that is a "breaky, funky or untoward" issue, not something that is purposeful.

Inconsistency:

If you are looking at your photostream, and mouseover your buddy icon, the link isn't using the alias for your pretty URL, it's using the "@" user ID. Mouseover the icon dropdown menu, and you see the pretty URL, back to the buddy icon, and you get the @ ID again. When I click my buddy icon from my photostream view, this is the URL I get.

I don't remember this happening before the new nav bar, so I am guessing it probably changed at that point. Perhaps I am wrong!

That's fairly inconsistent across the site for me, and I don't have the new nav bar yet.

On some pages (Help Forum, for example), hovering over the buddy icon shows the original URL -- including NSID, while on other pages, the buddy icon gives the personalized URL.

There is a banner informing users of the new iPhone app (as staff clarify above, this is an announcement by the site you joined of a new site service, not an advertisement). You can dismiss the banner. If you are seeing ads from third parties - the usual cars, detergent, prescription drugs, whatever - see this:

Bug:

Using the "icon menu" at upper right, when I hover over the icon, I see the drop down list as expected. But if I move my cursor diagonally (down and to the left) in order to click on something in the drop-down menu, the menu disappears before the cursor gets to the items.

My solution: move the cursor straight down and *then* left.

Better solution: the menu shouldn't disappear that quickly.

One of the things I love about the Help Forum is learning how people actually use web browsers (and how they often don't). The UI insight is really interesting. I pass a lot of it on to my husband, though the product he's working on these last several years isn't a web product.

I didn't either, but only because I so rarely visit the Home page. And when I do, I usually get there by clicking the Flickr logo. (The "Home" link used to directly under the Flickr logo, so the cursor movement should be nearly the same for anyone who does visit that page regularly.)

You're viewing the new navigation page. Flickr has changed the design so things look different.

As Lú_ explained, your flickrmail is now hidden under your icon in the upper right hand corner. There is no more envelope. When you have new flickr mail, you'll see the badge with the number of unread flickrmails. Click on the badge to go to your flickrmail.

You can also access flickrmail by hovering over the icon on the upper right hand corner and then choosing "flickrmail" from the drop down menu that will appear.

Clicking on the flickr logo on the upper left takes you to the home page. Typing www.flickr.com in the address bar will always take you to the home page.

It's not a bug. There were tweaks to Organizr as well, as part of the new roll-out. This isn't a bug but by design.

It was noted in the beta test that language is confusing because it pops-up whether or not you have unsaved changes. I believe staff responded that it was too difficult to code it for every possible use case (or something to that effect).

There's a new button in Organizer to take you back to your photostream. One of the beta testers pointed out it would be very annoying if you spent ages creating a custom batch and then inadvertently exited the Organizer (there's no function to save a batch). So the confirm was added to avoid this scenario.

"There's a new button in Organizer to take you back to your photostream."

Testing with old nav bar (this account) and new nav bar (other account), I don't see a new button in Organizr.

In this account, there's a "Your photostream" link at right top. In the other account, there's a "Your photostream" link at left top. It only appears to have been moved from right to left.

"It was noted in the beta test that language is confusing because it pops-up whether or not you have unsaved changes"

When I click the Organizr "Your Photostream" link in my other account, I don't get a popup about unsaved changes (unless I had unsaved changes).

Well that was enough to generate a long and involved debate in the beta group. The confirm option as originally implemented popped up anytime you exited Organizer, but the devs did their best to limit its appearance to match where the user had been working with a new batch.

I'll take your word for it -- that there were tweaks and that they were beta-tested.

But in this roll-out, the only tweak I can find is the new location for that single link (and the popup warning which only appears if I have unsaved changes). If there are other tweaks, I haven't found them yet, and no one else has mentioned them here, outside the beta.

I often have open a whole string of tabs in Opera, both when opening up a number of images of my contacts to comment on subsequently, or when in groups, for awarding. Means I constantly have to switch tabs.

Every time I move my mouse cursor over the new nav-bar, sub-menus pop open.

Doesn't distract much since I'm fast & focused, but completely pointless. Old system was imho a LOT better, I'm not too lazy to click once or twice.

Still a firm thumbs down from me. Also read my comments on the feedback page please

I don't know if it browser dependant but I find that you do not need to click any of the menu items; hover the mouse pointer over the menu item is enough for it to provide the menu items as a drop-down. It easier to type click though so for that reason alone I can see that explanation.

Something I only noticed recently is that not only do the pop up menus (You Contacts Groups etc) on the nav toolbar fold out instantly (annoying when changing between tabs) but they also leave a residual shadow lining underneath. Sometimes 2 at at time are visible. They stay there unless you scroll the page or hover/move over another pop up menu, effacing the last one or two, but instantly creating a new one in its place

I use Opera 11.62

As you may have surmised by my posts, I still don't like the toolbar one bit, even when these are minor quibbles that will no doubt be sorted out any time soon

I've become absolutely convinced by now the reason you want us all to have this toolbar is sheer visibility of the flickr-yahoo logo all the time, not any purported 'improved navigation', but might it not be an option to have a short cut key to disable/enable it? I already use shortcuts a lot, great feature of flickr old-style

99.9% of the time on flickr I don't navigate through this nav toolbar at all, so why have it there all the time....oh, I forgot again, silly me ;-D LOL

Have you tried disabling any add-ons you have in Chrome? There haven't been any other reports of the problem, and it's a commonly used browser.

Maybe I'm missing an add-on? I only have exif viewer and avg, both turned off and it still doesn't work...

+1 to this. An account option would be good, along with the missing one to turn off "justified view" or at least be able to select one's default view.

I didn't really want to go and read any other bugs but I you should be able to hover over your picture and get a drop down menu. I haven't been able to access this. Its kind of annoying because I need to check my mail and I don't remember what the url extension is for it so I can't access it -_-
