Gigantic interestingness fluctuation

carl_lexicon says:

Suddenly my photos are COMPLETELY rescrambled by interestingness, the list looking nothing like it used to, with some stinky photos in my top ten. Is this just a sweeping, sudden reordering by the interestingness algorithm? Has anyone else experienced this? This is the first time this has happened, and I've been here a year!

I am pretty sure it changed in the last few days, seem like it coincided with the 'grey boxes' phenomena in calender view (now fixed).

The last gigantic change before this one was last July, I think.

The reordering defies rationality (terrible photos ahead of Explored photos). But then, I am a complete beginner, and have not honed my judgement of what is "good."

no major changes here.
but if a big change does happen, you'll know soon enough from the fast and furious complaints. ;-)

I'm assuming the OP was talking about the personal interestingness list in Your Popular. I'm not sure when the change occurred but mine seemed to have changed a bit too.

There was a discussion a few months ago about the effect of longevity on interestingness where it seemed the ranking was biased toward those old interesting shots that continue to accrue views and comments thereby staying at the top of the list.

I'm sorry I haven't been able to find the link to that discussion because from looking at my rankings now it seems that an attempt has been made to correct for that. Maybe someone else will come up with that link or correct my impression if I'm wrong.

Ah birdyboo I misread.

For me it seems that the explore ranking also changed -- and at two different levels/dimensions -- my older (6 months and older) photos got more interesting (some ugly ones rotated in -one of a kitty) and does not fluctuate much at all - they stay there fixed at the same position while all my younger ones rotated out completely even those ones that still have a lot of activity. Not that it matters, but interesting how the explore algorithm varies and behaves.

I have heard others have noticed a change as well... so that confirms a change. Possible that only a subset are effected, maybe they are sharing the same behavior or style, or maybe they don't have interesting photos- and it looks like interesting are now drab colors (I looked at the calendar view) so that would count me out, but who knows...

Yeah the individual/most popular also changed...

cooriander Yes I noticed some change in Explore but not as much as in the personal list. They may be related but there were some usually excluded from Explore images in December (including at least one that was just flat out porn) and Silent Observer mentioned that he was adjusting the algorithm. I think any adjustments have a ripple effect.

Ah thanks Birdyboo - hmmm. I wonder if my younger images has inadvertently been marked as indecent... Thanks for the link.

Thanks for the link to a discussion that puts things in better perspective, birdyboo. If I like my photos and the people I share them with do too, that's really all that matters, especially if photography is not a serious hobby. Explore is nice, I admit, but so what?

cooriander I doubt it. Explore changes all the time, in small ways and big. I think dbthayer is right - there may have been some changes lately, but not really any Flickr shaking ones.

carl_lexicon (longpalindrome.com) That sounds good to me too.

I'm not sure if this is related, but couple of days ago we've changed interestingness calculation a bit. Now geotagged photos going to have increased interestingness value.
