Official Thread: New Flickr Pro Account pricing

Flickr Staff

George says:

Hi!

As some of you may have read on the Flickr Blog, Pro Accounts have changed a little... they're cheaper, now US$24.95 per year, and now you can upload more per month, and free accounts show 200 photos instead of 100.

(Here's a link to the FlickrBlog post.)

We're sure you'll have some questions about it, so this thread is the place!

Anyone who paid $41.77 for their pro account will get:
1) Double what they paid for, and
2) 2 free pro accounts to give away

väcäpinta - I think you're supposed to give them to your friends ;)

I had Pipes order my pro account for me last October with her credit card (I sent her the money which was easier at the time.. the international money order thing confused me) so that counts right? It wasn't a true gift account so I just wanted to know if that means I'll be treated the same as "anyone who paid 41.77 for a pro account"?

Hey, George--I think that Quas tried to use one of his free invites to sponsor a user via the "Sponsor this user" link. He naturally got dunned for $25.

The e-mail that Bees mentioned should have its own, special procedure for using the invites, right? So that Quas could go through the special procedure to "sponsor" his user for free?

P.S.--No, thank you.
P.P.S.--Apparently, judging from the blog post's ruler, pro users start off at six inches and go up from there. That's a really nice benefit. ;-)

It looks like some of the emails that were sent out will give the error that Matt reports above, thanks to bit of scripty weirdness. (That's the technical term.) But, visiting your home page will provide you with the link you need to start giving things away :)

Don't worry - everyone's accounts are fine! It's just the link in *some* of the emails that got corrupted.

MrJennings  Pro User  says:

Carst, I'm sorry but I just don't understand what you're upset about. What did you discover later on that wasn't in the email?

You got the same thing that I got: an extra year, two pro accounts to give to your friends, 2 GB uploads, and the warm feeling that the support that you gave Flickr early on is appreciated. (Well, maybe you didn't get that last one.)

When we ponied up our $41.77, we were agreeing that that was for a year's service. Flickr was under absolutely no moral, ethical or legal pressure to give us anything more than what we agreed on when we signed up. As jcroft pointed out, the cell phone industry is a perfect example of making you stick to your agreements.

Flickr did the right thing. And I for one love them even more for it.

By the way, carst, it seems like your math is wrong. You paid $41.77, and you got two years (now worth $49.90, but would have originally cost you $83.54) plus 2 one-year gift accounts (also worth $49.90). So how is Flickr the bad guy in this?

People will always complain....

Hey George, I just thought I'd mention that I was a little bit confused by the line "you'll see a note on your home page telling you what to do" in the official gift email. I wrongly assumed that would mean my photos page, but it's actually plain www.flickr.com. I reckon most people would go straight to their photos page when visiting flickr rather than using www.flickr.com as a starting point. I reckon you should have a small note about it on each pro users photos page just in case others have the same trouble finding it. Then again, maybe I'm just stoopid...

Can we have a civilised discussion please?

When I lower my overall pricing scheme, I do not package this as a discount to some of my customers, only to have them discover later on prices were lowered anyway.

It's pure business logic.

I just wondered if I am the only one noticing this.

carst, look at it this way: flickr is under no obligation to reduce the price for what we've already paid for. I paid $42 for one year, and most businesses would expect me to just put up with the fact that they're selling the same thing cheaper now.

if I were to renew at the cheaper price I'd have paid $67 for two years. as it is I've paid $42. you may think of that as "only fair", but it's certainly not standard behaviour.

I paid $41.77 for my pro account. Based on current prices (I'll grant the assumption), that should have gotten me 1.67 years of service. Now, I've gotten 2 instead. That's a bonus.

I've also gotten two accounts that I've given away. That's a bonus (or two).

The new limit for uploads is 2GB. Does it apply to everyone? Sure, but who cares? Can I really only enjoy myself if others are suffering? So don't call it a bonus if you don't want to. That still leaves two free bonus gifts at the very least.
