btw, i don't have flashblock or any other plugin that might mess up flash detection installed. (ran into that already on a different machine.)

Try the beta Flash (from an earlier post):
labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashplayer9/
**EDIT:** Linux version is a full release now and can be obtained here:
www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer
I'll leave the link above in place for posterity. *sniff sniff*

Thanks for the tip Kevin, but unfortunately upgrading to 9 does not work. I upgraded to the flash 9 release candidate after reading this and still cannot access the flash uploader in Firefox under Linux (Ubuntu).
I really wish I could get this working, as the available Linux uploaders are not really up to par. I am in the process of making a Linux (Java actually) uploader identical in function to the Flickr provided windows uploader but with school and work I find it hard to find time to get it done.
I wonder why it is that Flickr hasn't ported their Windows uploader to linux or at least released an api friendly source for it so that developers can easily get it up and running.

EzNet: We're beta testing a brand new Windows and Mac Uploadr that's built on Mozilla's XULRunner. Getting it running in Linux as soon as possible is a high priority, so stay tuned! You can follow the beta test at flickr.com/help/forum/en-us/59804/.

Hmm- I have the Flash page working under Kubuntu and I know flickrjo got it going to upload. Perhaps see if a test account on the same system may be able to access it.
EDIT-
It appears you did not install the newer one which is 9.0.64
Your browser reports to us 9.0.48. Please try reinstalling.

@rcrowley: Fantastic! I am glad to hear it and am anxiously awaiting its arrival! Heading over to the beta page now! Thanks again...
@Kevin: I checked my install and it is reporting 9.0.64 as the installed version. I don't know what it would be reporting *.48... Here is a screenshot of my install...

Update:Ok, so I checked the uploader again after posting the above post and I am now getting the flash version... When I went to the upload page I was given the same notice about javascript and current flash, so I clicked on the "the flashy version of our uploader" and was taken to the flash uploader... now when I go back to the upload page I get the flash!!! YEA!!! Thanks... Don't have time to test the functionality this morning but I will post back later on it...
Thanks again!

Well, it turns out that things are not working so well on my end after all. I tried (attempted to try) the Flash uploader after work, and now I get what I assume to be the flash uploadr (picture below) - but only for 1/2 second and then the page auto redirects to the "noflash" version of the upload page.
Going to mess with it and see if I can figure anything out... anyone get it figured out, please let me know.

Edit: Ok, so I have an oddball machine that I am running things on... Update is that things are working. Here's how it breaks down... Everything works under Firefox 2 with the updated flash (v. 9.0.64.0). I thought things didn't work after work because I forgot the fact that I was using Firefox v3 ("minefield" instead of v 2) and appearance the Flickr Flash uploader does not work with FIREFOX V 3, but does work with Firefox Version 2 as long as you are using the updated v. 9.0.64.0 of flash.
@flickrjo:On Ubuntu all you need to do is download the new flash (v9.0.64) and extract it to a temporary folder. Next, goto /usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree as root (ALT+F2, "gksudo nautilus /usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree") and rename "libflashplayer.so" to "libflashplayer.so.BU". Next, move the file named "libflashplayer.so" from the temp directory to the "/usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree" directory and test out flash. If everything works as expected you can delete the file you renamed to '*.BU' for space (or keep it there in case you need it again)

I might be being a bit thick ;), but the link kevin gives only seems to be for Solaris and not linux and there doesn't seem to be a linux download?

I had the same issue, thanks :D. One thing: if you have Flash Block (FF extension) white list flickr in the extension preferences :).

I have the latest flash version and have tried EzNet's suggestion without luck. Thing is, I see the flashy version begin to load before getting redirected and mistakenly being told I need to upgrade. It seems like it'd work fine if I was just allowed to decide for myself if things aren't working.

jais- Your browser is reporting Flash 9, rev 48 to us, which I do not believe was compatible; rev 115 is the current incarnation.

The version test on the Adobe site tells me I'm using rev 115... I'll try a system reboot to see if that fixes anything, but I don't see how it would if adobe is detecting the right version.
Edit: it didn't.

Better solution for Debian/Ubuntu users.
Go to the download page for the package on the main Debian repository. Select a mirror. When prompted to save or install using the package manager, select install.
If you're not using a standard Ubuntu installation I don't know what your exact steps will be, but if you install this package then Apt will be aware of it and automatically upgrade when your distribution catches up.

thanks to DrewK for the link for *the* fix!
i'm using Ubuntu 7.10 on an old Dell Latitude.
ran updates on Ubuntu again just to be sure.
hit the link in DrewK's post.
restarted everything and the Flash uploader within Flickr finally worked!
yeah!
thanks again DrewK.
