Flickr Shamefully Blocked in China

Shuke, the Pilot  Pro User  says:

digg.com/world_news/Flickr_Shamefully_Blocked_in_China

Flickr has recently been blocked in mainland China in a humiliating and shameful way. Texts on Flickr are left intact whereas photos are filtered. Please spread the news and help the fight for freedom. Thank you for digging this post.

Not sure if other Flickr users in China are currently posting in this thread?; www.flickr.com/help/forum/41998/
"Can't see any images (China June 7th)"

I'm dying to read what's being discussed there!!!

The thread itself is blocked here, and with or without a proxy, the connection is reset in seconds. Anyone want to give us (censored victims) an update from that thread?

EDIT:

"As there's already a thread on this over here: www.flickr.com/help/forum/41998/ I'm going to lock this one down to keep things together."

You realize that all Flickr members in China can NOT access that thread right? Keep them together my azzzzzz. Thanks :-S

As a flickr user (living and working in China) Yantai, Shandong Province, I completely agree with you - Yahoo/flickr should indeed do something or at least comment on he problem - Yes
because of it being blocked (maybe its key words) maybe its something to do with a certain date - of a certain event whatever the reason yahoo/flickr owes its users an explanation considering that it openly cooperates with this extremist regime (read dictatorship)

Don't expect any business to do anything but roll over and comply with any censorchip the chinese govt imposes, in fact they will probably pass any 'offenders' details to the secret police. I doubt Yahoo/Flickr will try and fly the flag for freedom.

news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6724531.stm

Amnesty is concerned that censorship is on the increase.

"The Chinese model of an internet that allows economic growth but not free speech or privacy is growing in popularity, from a handful of countries five years ago to dozens of governments today who block sites and arrest bloggers," said Tim Hancock, Amnesty's campaign director.

"Unless we act on this issue, the internet could change beyond all recognition in the years to come.

More and more governments are realising the utility of controlling what people see online and major internet companies, in an attempt to expand their markets, are colluding in these attempts," he said.

According to the latest Open Net Initiative report on internet filtering, at least 25 countries now apply state-mandated net filtering including Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Burma, Ethiopia, India, Iran, Morocco and Saudi Arabia.

Friends - let's try to stick to the Flickr help related core issue here (there are plenty of other places to discuss politics or, presumably, xylene :)

Unfortuantely, the firewall's administrators don't provide contact details, so we can't just call up someone who makes decisions about which sites are blocked and plead our cases. All we can do at this point is continue to monitor, seek advice from colleagues closer to the region and/ore with more experience.

We definitely haven't forgotten about you, but there is not much for us to announce publicly at this point. As soon as anything changes, will let you know. And we're all rooting for you!

The Spouter, how about this...

www.betanews.com/article/Yahoo_Sued_for_Aiding_Chinese_Au...

Yahoo is finding itself in legal hot water over assisting Chinese authorities in identifying an Internet user accused of writing "subversive" messages about the country's government.
Yu Ling, wife of Wang Xiaoning, sued the company in US District Court for the Northern District of California, accusing Yahoo of violations of Alien Tort Claims Act and the Torture Victims Protection Act.

Yahoo was first identified by the group as the source of the information in April of last year. This wasn't the first time Yahoo had done so; it was the fourth publicized case of the company handing over information to Chinese authorities.

While I commiserate with you on lack of access to your photos on Flickr brought about by your government, I think you may find that you are using Flickr for what it is not intended for. Your Photo Stream in your free account seems to be completely full of the products of your business. Please see the Community Guidelines:
www.flickr.com/guidelines.gne
Quote:

Don’t use Flickr for commercial purposes.
Flickr is for personal use only. If we find you selling products, services, or yourself through your photostream, we will terminate your account. Any other commercial use of Flickr, Flickr technologies (including APIs, FlickrMail, etc), or Flickr accounts must be approved by Flickr.

I do hope what you are doing has been approved by Flickr

If you are waiting for Yahoo to come to the rescue, think again...

news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6747095.stm

Yahoo shareholders have rejected plans for the company to adopt a policy that opposes censorship on the internet.
Proposals to set up a human rights committee which would review its policies around the world, specifically China, were also heavily defeated.

Yahoo has been criticized by human rights groups since 2005 for its role in turning over some political dissidents' e-mails.

The materials were used to prosecute and imprison them.

But Yahoo insists it must comply with local laws in areas where it operates.

Yahoo shareholders should remember that 'what goes around, comes around'. Rather than think about their own short term gain they should instead contemplate these words...

"I am truly free only when all human beings, men and women, are equally free. The freedom of other men, far from negating or limiting my freedom, is, on the contrary, its necessary premise and confirmation." - Mikhail A. Bakunin

As you can imagine I am extremely unhappy about this.

There's another story that you won't see in mainstream media A Chinese woman lived in the US for 10 years illegally. At the 9th year, she got pregnant. At the 10th year, before she was ready to pop out her baby, the US govt caught the woman and wanted to send her back to China. During the process of sending the woman from her home to airport, the staffs used violent and caused the woman lost the baby, because they didn't want the child born in the US and become a citizen automatically.

It sounds like a story that would happen in the China everyday. But it's absolutely horrible to hear it from a country that regards human rights highly.
