we tend to trust images more than words
Which is odd, given that images are very easy to manipulate. Even without Photoshop, the photographer can slant an image simply by being careful with the framing. Add in the possibility of posed 'candid' scenes, and photography can be very deceiving indeed.

Nobody will block it, sure!
But they can block my extension. After that, you should upload it in your weblogs and file-sharings so others can use it!

"sure, in theory. maybe when flickr finishes Chinese localization (flickr, 加油!), it'll start to happen.
so the good news is that with this blocking, the gov't. has given publicity to a site that wasn't even that popular in China, and generated worldwide attention on the GFW. for what--a porous, temporary block? keep up the good work, guys! ;-)"
I'm looking at the June 2007 issue of the Chinese magazine, "Photographers' Companion" right now. It has an article about the top photo sharing websites in China. It lists Flickr as number 3.

I live in Xiamen and I avoided the protest because I am not only a foreigner but a tall blond woman foreigner and I'm easily noticed here. The day after the protest march against the chemical plant, a Chinese friend, who used to live here in Xiamen and now is going to school in England, sent me a lot of coverage of the protest which he clipped from news sources there. He uses Flickr and also sent me a link to the Flickr photo page of a friend of his in Xiamen who had just posted a few early photos of the demonstration.
I eagerly clicked on that link - immediately I lost my connection to Flickr. And I have not been able to see photos since then - the day after the protest. Much longer than other people have been experiencing China's block. I had no idea that other people in China were unable to reach Flickr until, tired of waiting for the problem I've been having to go away, I fiinally checked this forum to complain.

@ FHKE ... LOL >> WIKI has been blocked for ages ....
THis has either to be a 'content' issue .. or a 'corporate' issue .. If it is content then FLckr will never come back on line because there is no way for a government to effectively police what is published.
If it is a corporate issue the it has to be with something yahoo has done ( coverned the roits in news groups ) or something they haven't done ... ( give the government the emails of the pseuds used in flickr - as you all know flickr is a blog ((technically)) and all blogs are required to be registered in china) -

Things now running out of my imaginations. Suppose everyone knows that flickr has hit the Chinese Firewall and we are not able to see any photos there, I visit flickr and blogger by using OperaTor. It's slowly but okay, then since this morning, tor doesnt work. Whatever I change the Privoxy Setting, it dumbs. So, alright, alright, I move, I download FireFox+access flickr 1.5. Lovely little add-on isn't it. But problem comes again, during I was reading some post posted in the Chinese Group, it suddenly shut down saying "connection was reset". Then in less 3 mins I cant open any flickr page. After that I'm not seeing any group pages, I only care about mine okay? But too bad that when I check out my flickr mail, same situation happens.
"connection was reset", so hey, what's the hell is that?? So what can I do now? Keep blindin' or shut up??

mmonk: "don't tell the communist party".
Too late. Judging by some of the posts in this thread, the communist party is already here, watching everything (and quietly suggesting that the "problem" images be removed and everything will go back to normal.) So if the work-arounds are blockable, odds are they will be shortly.

Proxies may be useful, but the point is that many sites deep link to flickr galleries and those sites become virtually inaccessible if you are relying on geeky work arounds to solve the problem.

Dear Hamad,
Is there a way for Iranians to access myspace.com? I lost many Iranian friends when it was blocked. And when I try to talk to my friend in Iran on yahoo messenger, it is very slow and impossible to carry on a conversation. Does the Iranian government not want it's people to be friends with the rest of the world? They can't stop us, once we became friends, we will always be friends and will find a way.
I applaud you for your help in helping the people of China gain access to Flickr again.

do we hear anything from Flickr staff on the issue?
all I've seen is a pretty much "gratuite" statement 3 days ago when it happened.
awkward position of Flickr: they have a "not so good" reputation on freedom of expression (deleting groups, users and pictures) and the mother company is chasing dissidents together with the Chinese government.
maybe that's why they are silent ...
and as far as the GFW is concerned: are we still buying Cisco (Linksys)?

As Flickr stated, the Notice is updated when there is something to update.
As far as Flickr reputation is concerned, they have quite a good reputation when it comes to freedom of expression and only delete accounts that have been set up just to spam or else take action when there has been flagrant abuse of the ToU and a member refuses to correct their behaviour.
If Yahoo.cn had any control or influence over Flickr you can bet this thread and any similar ones would have been deleted by now.

I've seen innocent (as far as pics is concerned) groups deleted just because they opposed to Flickr's censorship policies.
And we all know how Yahoo helps Chinese government to trace dissidents who, based on Yahoo delivered evidence, get convicted for many years because of their writing.
Back to the GFW: if Flickr does not make any effort to make that their (paying) customers have access to the service again; than there is nothing to update ... Right?
I don't know how many customers Flickr has in China. What I do know is that in case a service is unavailable, whatever the cause, most companies will communicate with their customers directly by e-mail or at least give frequent updates with regards to their efforts to make the service available again.

As a paid up 'Pro' account holder in China I would hope that Flickr's parent will do something to either compensate its PRC users or is using whatever influence it has in the system (via Alibaba) to resolve the problem swiftly. If Yahoo can afford to pay $1 billion to have Alibaba take over its operations -- and can afford to pay spin doctors and lawyers over the Shi Tao case -- surely it can cough up a bit of change for end users.
Or would that go against the "Public Pledge on Self-discipline for the Chinese Internet Industry," that Yahoo signed?

@myrickblog: I don't think there is too much Flickr can actually do. In the end this is a government-induced blockage, not a technical problem caused by a few bad servers.
In China you cannot just start complaining as you could in Germany or the US. There are totally other structures and regulations. Even with a lawyer claiming it could take longer than a year before any change occurs. And only then if the right person feels convinced. For a company not as established as Yahoo! in China it is clearly complicated to start a persuasion process through all government institutes. And even during the claiming process, I doubt that Flickr would be allowed accessable.

Hamed, no, I have to use another proxy to see it. Your extension works just fine for Flickr, but the blog is hosted by Wordpress (it can't be hosted by Flickr or it wouldn't still be accessible when Flickr goes for its massage). Seeing the blog isn't really that important, I'm just a little bemused that Flickr chose to host it on a domain that's blocked in China and has been for a while.
Oh, and thanks Flickr staff for finally updating the official thread... even though nothing's changed, it's nice to know you haven't forgotten users in China and are still working on the problem!

I paid $25 for my yearly Flickr Pro account. As far as I am concerned, the Chinese government has stolen my money . And this isn't the first time. It happened six months back when Xanga was censored, and still is. I had a paid account with that site as well. If the Chinese government insists on censoring these sites, they should do so selectively. 99% of all content is harmless. It's completely childish, destructive, unfair, and disrespectful to punish and entire community of users for the actions or content of a few. Furthermore, the slim percentage of the population that can actually read and understand English is probably already informed of the very things they are trying to censor anyways. It makes no damn sense.

as far as I know Flickr is still blocked everywhere in China and we're getting used to using the workarounds.
mission completed for the authorities. I think they don't care about the few people who managed to install a workaround. they are more concerned about blogging of Flickr pics that would reach a larger audience.
like in art: bashing Mao is OK in art, but nowhere else.
allow those people, who need to let their steam off, a place to do it and if it gets too big: ban it.
i.e. neutralize the desire for freedom by allowing it in a controlled environment.
that's where we are right now ... :-(

Looks like the bad news about the short-lived good news, was short-lived. I can see some images again. There appears to be a pattern:
1. I can't see any images on located on farm2.
2. I can see some images on farm1, but only if the file-size (i.e. the resolution) is small enough. For example, here are different sizes of the same image of mine:

farm1.static.flickr.com/226/505832821_11dd85e53c_s.jpg

farm1.static.flickr.com/226/505832821_11dd85e53c_t.jpg

farm1.static.flickr.com/226/505832821_11dd85e53c_m.jpg

farm1.static.flickr.com/226/505832821_11dd85e53c.jpg
The first two ["square" and "thumbnail" size] are visible to me. The next one ["small" size] loads only part-way before timing-out. The "medium" size does not load at all, nor do any of the sizes larger than that.
Can anyone else in China confirm a similar pattern?

@xyb553166
Before it's clear where the root cause of this problem is, I wouldn't accuse anybody like that. The fact is that Flickr appears to be perfectly accessible from everywhere outside mainland China (I do not regard Hong Kong as mainland china)
It might indeed be a technical problem, but then again, can you access wikipedia.org or news.bbc.co.uk?

xyb553166 - as has been said before, Flickr is being blocked by the Chinese government. It's not a problem caused by Flickr, let's be clear about that :-).
And this is the first time I've been able to access this thread all day (the rest of the site is fine through a proxy) - whether through a proxy, plugins or not... as other users have reported, the block seems to be inconsistent. Which I'm thinking must be cause for hope!

Apologies if this has already been posted:
news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6747095.stm
"Yahoo shareholders have rejected plans for the company to adopt a policy that opposes censorship on the internet."
Read into it what you will...

@ dvd3141: I couldn't see any of the individual photos, either. The computer would make an attempt and then display a message: "Safari can’t open the page “http://farm1.static.flickr.com/226/505832821_11dd85e53c_s.jpg” because the network connection was reset, which sometimes occurs when the server is busy. You might be able to open the page later."
Of course, the server wasn't busy when I used Firefox with the Access Flickr! add on.

Gosh... same here in Shanghai!!!
It shouldn't be govt restriction coz i still can see the pics from my local friends.
Please can the Flickr team resolve this ASAP?
It's my main way of connecting with friends and family back home...
Many thanks!
