Sounds like the Chinese Firewall is blocking access to our image farms, which seems to be confirmed by www.greatfirewallofchina.org
lifeimage or jwsun - if you open Terminal.app and run "traceroute farm1.static.flickr.com" what do you get?

This happened earlier this year and it was a flickr problem, not a Chinese "firewall" problem.
I'm pretty sure China's not one big system, but rather it's controlled by each ISP, which means it's unlikely they would all kick in at the same time - which seems to be what has happened today with flickr.

And if you visit farm1.static.flickr.com/192/497269393_f65a57506d.jpg ?
Assuming there's no image, what does the browser say? "Connection timed out", "Can't find host", or another error message?
Finally, are there any mac folks with Terminal.app who can paste the results of running "host farm1.static.flickr.com"?

Hey guys.
Everything you've posted so far suggests that something's pretty effectively blocking any attempt to access any URLs with hostname farm1.static.flickr.com and farm2.static.flickr.com
These are where all our images (including buddy icons) live.
Since many of you can see the images using other aliases for those machines, it doesn't appear that we have any network/server issues which would explain this.
So far I can't see anything to disprove my original theory that those URLs are being blocked for users in China. :(
We'll have more ops and support staff around in the morning, and look into this further (it's nearly midnight here in California).

Google also has a Chinese Google that cooperates with the Chinese government so it's possible you won't see this Blog either
hkdigit.blogspot.com/2007/06/18th-anniversary-of-tiananme...

The firewall works by detecting proscribed words, when it forces reset of transmission.

@1980Nic
It's just an automatic device which operates against a list of words. I think that is why the Christmas day earthquake was so disastrous here - everything internet has to filter through a single firewall point. When the backbone was lost, it was unablem to reconfigure round, so there was a logjam there. Still not quite right yet, as everything's a lot slower than it used to be.
NB just my interpretation. Not likely to read about it in China Daily, and Taiwan Times is blocked too.

It's just an hypothesis, but, to answer your question if Flickr.com was to be blocked it would not block the images as they are hosted on farm1.flickr.com. An image is worth a thousand words especially when the words are in a different language and images can be linked to Blogs...but, we'll see.

OT: I doubt flickr staff read Chinese, so to be productive, it's best to keep this in English. (illusion.den - I know you wish to "protect the mother-tounge" but trust me, it will be safe - even if we use English here!)
Interesting that the image farm would be blocked and not the entire site. Makes me think that some blog or group of blogs got blocked and the flickr image farms got caught up in the sweep. Hopefully this is an error and Yahoo China can smoothing things over and get us back online in China!

I want to hit my head hard... I can't even see the Flickr itself after refreshing the page from time to time. Tech problems? I hope it's not a prelude.

Yahoo! China has nothing to do with Flickr or Yahoo! US... it's totally another company.
OK if it has something positive, I hope Yahoo! US could rethink the decision that they will close Yahoo! album this fall.

Not "totally another company"
"Yahoo China, operated by Alibaba.com which is 40 percent owned by Yahoo"

It's just like a first warning to flickr, blocking images and allowing text. I guess Flickr have to make a compromise with China gov before block removed. Deleting all images about anti-gov maybe the first thing Flickr have to do no matter what is the truth or not.

@Steve Webel
Here is one Blog hkdigit.blogspot.com/2007/06/18th-anniversary-of-tiananme...
It is owned by Google and Google China cooperates with the Chinese Government. The Blog will probably be linked with other Blogs and the images in it are hosted on Flickr. Jonmperry has already confirmed he cannot see images on that blog. Albertuscan has confirmed that by using tor he can get around the Great Firewall of China and see all images on Flickr.
@Albretuscan
Your question has already been answered here

As far as what they may not want you to know about it is a major incident that happened 18 years ago in Beijing which is so taboo that only the older generation really know about it.

greatfirewallofchina.org does indeed seem to be blocking farm1.static.flickr.com as Hitherto stated earlier in this thread...

OK I don't use the proper words... I do think that Y! China don't want to get into trouble if it's really has sth to do with Great XXwall... and they may know it already.
I can't reload this page from time to time... I hope it's just my problem because of poor speed... I hope.

I am Guangzhou, can't see any pic. or images too from today's morning.... :-(
What happens?! pls recover it, ok?
我从今天早上9点钟开始, 一直都看不到任何图片啦....
And for me, there is one more question, a few days ago, when I opened Flickr, there is a pop-up window continuously showed up even I press the "confirm" button, it said "Run Time Error, Line: 52, Error: "F.output.date_strs" is blank or is not object"
How can I solve this problem?
