[closed] Anyone else annoyed that Yahoo Photos is closing?

Blissful Witch says:

Any other Yahoo Photos users out there that are incredibly annoyed that they are closing and we are being ushered to Flickr. I went from having thousands of photos stored on Yahoo to being offered a measly 200 on Flickr. I went from having a free service to one I now have to pay $25 a year for. I also find Yahoo Photos to have much simpler tools to use and also am a little turned off by an elitist attitude I detect on Flickr. Damn Yahoo!

Yes I am pissed it took 10 minutes to accept 4 photos. It was driving me nuts. I think they are trying to compete with photobucket on my space, but that is free!

I think the bottom line is Money as always. Yahoo owns flickr or a part of it. Don't forget that. It is cheaper to have one site that you have to pay for than converting the yahoo photos to a pay site. I imagine that if yahoo just said you can stay here but now we want to be paid. Now you would probably see a lot of people getting out the money but many would be angry. This is what Yahoo did in a way. Instead of the Pizza story I would more lean towards the storage story. They just don't want to store photos any more for free. I remember when Yahoo wanted me to use them to store my photos. They even gave me more space and upgraded the section to make me want it more. I wonder if they had something like this in mind all along. This is what makes people upset. We hate change but forced change is worse.

also...yahoo photos has been losing audience steadily, while flickr is climbing.

unique visitors

another factor is search engines: pics at yahoo photos can't be tracked, while flickr's can.

yes, I'm annoyed at the closing...and the influx of dissatisfied people who would be better off at another site.

purpletwinkie  Pro User  says:

This post certainly does not apply to everyone, but as I read through some of the responses I kept sensing a general feel about Flickr and the dissolution of Yahoo Photos, so I decided to write a response to a few of the topics.

1) I think a lot of people lose sight that behind all the "free" service websites are businesses. Yahoo offered something that you got to use (for a short while or long) and they are closing it down. Businesses close, and we've all had to face finding new options when it happens. As far as the $25 a year goes (for a Pro account)... that is cheap. That's per YEAR, not per month. There are still many free photo storage websites out there and many have been mentioned in this thread. You have to make it work for yourself. If $25/year isn't manageable (or you simply refuse), the time you took to write a response to this thread, you could have found several (free storage sites) through a Google search.

2) I've used Flickr for nearly three years now. I also used Yahoo photos way back when. I like Flickr. I never had a problem with Yahoo Photos either. It really comes down to learning the program you are working with. There are several mentions in this thread that people don't like Flickr because they can't make albums "I miss my albums", they write. Ridiculous. Those are people who rush to complain before even reading how a new (to you) site works. And yes, you can make as many "albums" as you like with Flickr Pro, but you have to get used to calling them "sets" now. You use the ORGANIZE tab at the top of your home page to make your sets.

3) People who are complaining that they "lost" photos in a transfer... Are you saying that the only place you have digital images and video stored is on a free online website? You upload them and then delete from your computer or external hard drive? If that's the case, then you learn lessons the hard way and have absolutely no reason to complain to anyone.

4) As far as Flickr being "elitist", that's news to me. I've never even heard/read such a thing until reading it in this thread. There were "grandmothers posting photos of grandchildren" on Flickr long before the migration of the Yahoo photo people. That's what I have found to be a great aspect of photo sharing on Flickr: many different people with many different photos.

My experience has been that people use Flickr in the way that suits them best... No doubt Flickr isn't for everyone, but you aren't going to change the dissolution of Yahoo Photos by complaining about Flickr.

5) There are a lot of tools/information to help you with Flickr. You can find most on the website itself, but also by doing web searches (such as Google) for things like "Flickr help" or "Flickr Tools" you will get more helpful information and links than you possibly need.

I'd fave your post if I could, purpletwinkie.

No one *forced* anyone to move to Flickr, in Y! photos there were several sites where to choose from.

It took me no more than a few hours to get the hang of things in Flickr. It is very intuitive. I'm sure it's not organized as Y! Photos was, it's a different site after all...

I don't understand all the complaints about Flickr. What is the problem? People say photobucket is better? Ok, why didn you choose photobucket instead of Flickr? And that's just an example.

It's a great site. It's different from Y! Photos and that's it.

Flickr is often blocked by firewalls - as is my experience. I can't show my pix to some people just because they can't access Flickr web site on their intranets. They could have done so in Yahoo!Photos..

Apart of that, I sort of like the Flickr design.

Why can't they just restore everything back to Yahoo just as it was just for a few days while we transfer elsewhere?

This sure has been an entertaining read. I jumped on flickr the day I saw it mentioned on boingboing, and it eventually took over all my image chores from the homebuilt Gallery install running on my server.

I can sympathize with the people grousing about flickr not being easy to use, as I know a number of people who routinely ask me for help doing e-mail attachments in Outlook and changing document margins in Word.

Anything I've ever wanted to know about the way flickr works has always been a click or two away. Yahoo! photos was a really second-rate offering, frankly, and while I can understand why Yahoo! would want to upgrade by purchasing a superior product, I'm sad as hell that they bought it before Google did.

Lila - It's a shame that the transfer of your photos hasn't gone smoothly. I haven't looked at any fine print, but I'm sure somewhere on the Yahoo Photos website there is an addendum that states you are ultimately responsible for your photos.

I don't know the exact number of Yahoo Photos patrons, but we're talking millions worldwide. It's not fathomable that they can "just restore everything back to Yahoo just as it was just for a few days while we transfer elsewhere". I realize to you, the only issue is your missing photos, but in the bigger picture that is unrealistic.

The point is, you should NEVER upload (hand over) IMPORTANT images or video files to ANY WEBSITE without saving a backup on your own computer.

To do so is reckless on your part and you shouldn't blame anyone but yourself for "losing your photos". A hard lesson learned, but important for the future.

Yes, it is hugely disappointing that Yahoo! is abandoning its free service. When I selected Flickr as my transfer destination, I wasn't aware that it would eventually cost me $25 per year to maintain the same number of images. Also, the Flickr interface just isn't as intuitive or well-designed.

You said
"Anyone else annoyed that Yahoo Photos is closing?"

I say "ANNOYED" Is putting it mildly. Sure I understand their deep down motives as to why they did it. After all. Im am sure it was Costing them a hefty sum $$$ providing FREE online photo storage/share space for an astronomical number of people with, say low side 500+ photos each.
Was it Bankrupting them? I highly doubt it. Was it dipping in to their Profit Margin? Very Likely.
My Question is this..... "Why are they shooting theme selves in the foot? Yes Flickr has some Good Points, but they also have a hole lot of not so good ones as well. Why on earth have they done away with some really great features? Example -- 1, ADD Photo to your Email. I really liked that feature when it came out. Always hated attachments. and we are back to them, OH JOY. 2, Changing (or at the least just putting up 1) Photos on Yahoo! Profiles. and thats just to name a few. Why Couldn't they just Up Grade Yahoo Photos, Keeping the Great Stuff and Adding more Great stuff. Then If the Need for it was there for them just make a few tid-bit features only available to Paid Yahoo Photos accounts????? Thats My Question.

One thing that I have major qualms about, is that on Yahoo Photos, my free account had 5 folders my photos were in.
Those were transferred to 5 sets here on Flickr.
But here's the catch....my Pro account will expire in December and I do not wish to pay.
However, free accounts here are only allowed to have 3 sets, which means that 2 of my sets will be deleted.
This is not a question of increasing space or anything.
I organise my photos a bit, and I would need about 5 sets to categorise them nicely.
But with only 3 sets, there will be pictures that don't fit into any of the sets, and they will have to remain unorganised.
Why is that I was able to have about 5 folders to organise my photos in (I made 5 folders when I was using the Yahoo Photos), but on Flickr, they will only allow free users to organise your photos into 3 folders (or 'sets')?

I don't want the remaining pictures to be unorganised, simply because they don't fit into the 3 categorised sets.

Any solution to this?
Is there a way to organise your photos and categorise them without using sets?
Flickr says free users should only be able to organise your photos in 3 categories, but they seem to forget that some people have more than 3 categories they separate their pictures in.

The Searcher  Pro User  says:

The reason you had something different on Yahoo than you do on Flickr is simply that they are two entirely different services. That's one of the reasons Yahoo gifted everyone with 3 free months of the paid version; so you could get a chance to see how it all worked, and to ease the transition (for all the good that did.)

Flickr knows full well that a lot of people need more than 3 sets to organize their photos (just like they know many people have more than 200 images they want to post). That's why they set a limit, to entice people to pay for the actual service with unlimited sets and collections. The free service isn't an end-all-be-all, like Yahoo's was. It's just a way to let people see how stuff works and to have some basic usage. Marketing 101.

Other simpler online gallery sites allow for more storage/organization for free, if that's what you need. Of course they're usually built around selling you stuff, prints, etc, so the storage is their "loss leader". That's Marketing 102 I think. Regardless, I think you'll find that wherever you go, you'll get what you pay for.

leather_girl001 says:

But paying as much money to get your photos even organised to 4 or 5 categories, instead of 3, is completely ludicrous.
I'm not asking for anything else----it just seems that Flickr thinks free users are SO unorganised that only 3 broad categories are sufficient.
Not only that, paying 25 US dollars just to categorise my photos into 4 or 5 categories is ridiculous enough.

I'm not asking for the opportunity to create all the sets I want, just 4 or maybe 5.

I know it's 'you get what you pay for', but not even allowing free users to organise their photos into more than 3 categories is a rip-off and a disappointment, considering that many other photo sites allow free users to organise their photos into more than 3 categories, sets, or folders (whatever name they call it).
But only Flickr seems to think that free users should be unorganised with their photos.

Yes, I know there is the Photostream thing, but it still remains too broad and unorganised.

Hi all,

The fact that a free service becomes a paid service could be understandable.
What is really not understandable is the impossibility to rescue my own pics from Y!Photos.
The only choice for an old Y! user was to pass to another internet service.
No download and not even a CD (which was something like 7 euros each – 700Mb) to have my pictures back.
So, it’s not only a matter of money.

I just wrote a mail to Flickr to let them have my pictures back.
I really hope they will allow the cumulative download of MY pictures.

Do anyone asked the same thing? Do you get a positive answer?
Or better, do any of you know if there is a way to do it themselves?

Thanks

Regards,
Crivalen
