[Official Topic] Yahoo! Photos closing (Was "Prepare for a flickr flood")

Civilized Explorer  Pro User  says:

From TechCrunch:

I am at a dinner event with Brad Garlinghouse (Yahoo SVP Communications & Communities) and Stewart Butterfield (Cofounder Flickr) are sitting at my table and told me that they will announce the closure of Yahoo Photos tomorrow. The actual closure will occur over the next few months, they say. The service will be shutdown in favor of the newer and more modern Flickr, which they acquired in March of 2005.

According to Tech Crunch, Yahoo photo has 2 billion stored photos versus flickr's 500 million.

civilized: you aren't by chance using my icon in your post, are you? I just changed it, and you just call me "The" on the post (that I can see.)

I wonder if that's a side-effect of things being renamed now if they're replaced (they did it to fix caching issues, which I could see occurring with user icons, too.) which means any time someone uses a user icon in a post, it'll vanish when they change it.

oops.

dbthayer - believe me, while your actual son may not be here, there's plenty of 15 years here who love jackass and it's ilk. You've just structured your contacts, groups, etc. so that you don't encounter them. (I belong to a few groups that are popular with the youngins, so yes, I can say for sure, that they are here - and in droves.) I don't think that aspect will change flickr at all. Flickr I believe has millions of users. I maybe interact with 2% of those million at best (and I'd suggest that even the most involved connected flickreeno doesn't come near to interacting with even 20% of the total flickr population).

As for it being a drain on resources, or interferring with viewing photos, and other non-photographic stills (can we at least drop the charade that this is still a PHOTO sharing site), I'll withhold my judgment on that. I'm not a programmer, nor a flickr/yahoo employee, so I'm not going to guess what their resources are.

I think this is the answer, assuming video will ever be allowed - set up your flickr life so that you interact with your personal community. It seems to be a way of doing flickr now, in fact.

RubyMae  Pro User  says:

It seems to be the way? Unless you're going to give up working, sleeping, eating, and any non-flickr relationships, you can't possibly interact will all the flickr members. And why would you want to. There's a lot of really bad photos, sketches, illustrations, CGI, collages and other static art images out there.

I still don't want video on flickr, but I really think it will be much ado about nothing.

Honestly, that sounds just like some Flickr members who post here.

Hopefully though, this video business in Flickr will amount to nothing.

A year ago I didn't have to wait ten minutes for a page to load because Yahoo 'adserver' or some other Yahoo gadget had decided to hang up on me.

i think it is lame that yahoo announced the closing of yahoo photos before the transfer tools were ready to go. and it sounds like it will be a while before they will be ready. doesn't affect me so much because i just have old photos on there (cause i've been using flickr for some time now) but it seems to have contributed to the confusion. :(

I just hope Flickr are anticipating the increase in user load and upping their hardware/bandwidth accordingly.

Things get boggy enough some nights during "prime upload time" without the punch of new users we're going to get when the transfer tools are released.

Even if there are other competing services for people to move to, some will move to Flickr, and many will do it at the same time.

Hi, I am new here (one of the yahoo photo users) so now I am wondering how to transfer all my photos over here. do I have to resave them all and move them 1 at a time, or is there a way to just transfer all of them at the same time and then go thru and edit them once they are here? Anyone know the answer? I have almost 200 photos on yahoo, don't want to lose them. Thanks, Jeanne

Not quite. It's just that Yahoo isn't closing down photos for a while, so they didn't expect people to jump ship the second they announced. Probably poor planning on their part; why invest any more time in something that's going to go away?

Anyway, the plan is apparently, some time in the Summer, they and/or Flickr will have tools to help you transfer your photos to here, or possibly to a variety of other photo sites as well. You'll still have to do the heavy lifting, probably.

With all the Yahoo transfer 'crap' (IMHO) what will they do about all the saftey filter and permission issues?

Even if we bulk move our (~1000) photos, are we going to have to try to sort and edit each one....

I know, someone will reply about batch editing... BUT, I have had repeated issues where batch prossessing in my sets have failed...

Any techies with a real answer????

The Searcher  Pro User  says:

if you have problems with Flickr's tools, then maybe Flickr isn't the place for you.

Generally, people seem to be able to use the tools, including batch editing, with hundreds of images at a time. So you may have to do it in a few stages, but nothing that would take you days or anything.

striatic says:

i'd guess that the transfer process would move over tagging and album information as well as sharing permissions.

heck, now that flickr account = yahoo account, flickr could possibly even transfer all comments on a photo.

so privacy permissions could be automatically be brought over from existing settings, looks like.

as for safety filter stuff, i guess staff will have to review each account as it moves over. that is unless yahoo photos already has a review process, in which case the review settings could also be brought over automatically.

in any case, unless someone has a lot of moderate or unsafe content coming over then they have very little to worry about.

irian says:

striatic, Robert Kriegar,

Snobbery does reflect poorly on this site. Not everybody here is an artist. Not all users in Flickr are here to look at artsy shots. Many of us just use it as a way to share pics with friends and family. And video support does bring enhancements. As striatic says, many of us take short clips of social events and vacation trips, which we want then to share with people we care about. You know, that video of your friend dancing on last party, or a panoramic view of the last hike completed. I don't care if it appears on Explore or whatever, all I want is for my friends to be able to see it without me flooding their email. For most cases, I won't even want it to be viewable publicly! It's a whole different need. If it is restricted to pro users, the fact that they would have to pay would deter the kind of questionable content that plagues YouTube. And with proper filters for types of content, people that don't want to see other people's video won't have to ever.

What does video on Flickr provide that YouTube doesn't? Finer privacy. Being able to have private videos that only my family can see, without them signing up to yet another service they don't need.

The beauty of Flickr is that by using tags and groups, you can restrict your experience to whatever you want it to be. If I ever want to look at artsy pics, it is easy to do it. If I want to look at puppy shots, that is easy too. And if my family wants to look at our puppy shots, without coming across anything else, it is also possible.

Staff: Heather:
Greetings!
You have made this thread Official Yahoo Photos Closing.
Is it possible to sort/split as distinct thread? Much is about another important issue to some -- video.

After a lot of hubristic propaganda last year, Yahoo Photos which promised permanent, unlimited photo storage/display for free, is collapsing. Many thousands around the world who have spent preparation money and time setting up their valuable material there are PO'd. Thousands don't know yet. Yahoo has not emailed users -- destructive chaos.

A separate thread in Flickr Forum for transferring Yahoo users would be much valued -- the programmes have many differences including the delays for vetting etc, though Flickr certainly has a higher sophistication of programme, (and much better average standard of photography :-)
Simple explanations/discussion for tranferees could save difficulties later.

As an ATT/Yahoo member, I currently have unlimited storage/access on Yahoo Photos. So I'm not at all happy that I only get 3 months of "Pro" access on Flickr. Seems like everyone on Yahoo Photos who currently have unlimited storage/access should all automatically get permanent "Pro" access levels on Flickr, once we are FORCED off of Yahoo Photos. I predict a lot of unhappy folks. And I think it's criminal that Yahoo has not yet notified Yahoo Photo uses of this impending closure of the service. I only stumbled across all of this by accident. Seems like VERY poor planning on Yahoo's part...

The Searcher  Pro User  says:

So.. as a reward for using a free service, you want to be gifted with a permanent paid service elsewhere? I think I'm missing the logic there. How would that be fair to the millions of Flickr users who pay $25 a year? If you had to pay for a service and then it shuttered, sure maybe I could see that, or some sort of refund.

But the three month pro deal is an incentive to get your business, it isn't a consolation prize. There are many free photo storing/gallery sites out there, you don't have to go to Flickr. Flickr's just vying for you with a deal.

Dwaine M  Pro User  says:

@ The Searcher: I'm not using a "free" service. It's a value added service that I pay extra for as a ATT/Yahoo Premium subscriber. Free Yahoo account holders get the same sort of access deal as free Flickr users. I've got no problem with those users getting this deal. For them, getting the 3 months of Pro service is a wonderful thing, and indeed an enticement to pay for and continue to use the Pro service. However, I am not one of those users. I already pay for a premium level service, and unlimited Yahoo photos was part of that. Now I'm apparently losing that. I don't want to be "gifted" with anything. I just want to maintain an equivalent level of service as what I've been paying for and receiving. It shouldn't be my sacrifice that Yahoo bought Flickr and wants to kill an existing service and move to this new thing they bought. It's already going to be an inconvenience to all the ATT/Yahoo users to have to move all their stuff to Flickr. Yahoo shouldn't be taking away existing privileges to boot! You don't see the logic in that??? Whether you do or you don't, I'm still unhappy. And I suspect more than a few other ATT/Yahoo subscribers will be too. Maybe it'll all be better if the MS talks heat up again? :)

The Searcher  Pro User  says:

yah, but that's sort of my point (aside from not knowing you paid for yahoo photo. I've never heard of anyone paying for that.) "all att/yahoo users" don't HAVE to move their stuff to Flickr. They just have to move their stuff. You have a beef with your Yahoo services, I get that.

I apologize, I've never actually used something that originated from Yahoo without it triggering my gag reflex in short order, and am shocked to hear they actually charge people for that crap, so I could see how dissatisfaction can run high.

But a lifetime supply of Flickr, is worth a lot more than whatever yahoo photos was/did, so maybe Yahoo has to offer something from a more comparable service.

As Searcher says, your beef is with Yahoo or ATT not here on flickr, although beefing may be its own reward so it doesn't matter where you beef. :-)

I suspect the reply from Yahoo or ATT will be that they reserved the right to change the terms of service and did in fact change the terms on appropriate notice.

Again, Yahoo photo persons aren't required to come to flickr. There are lots of other free hosting services that don't have a 200 photo max. I'm confident the free 3-months' service is to suck people in with hundred or thousands of photos, then have all but the last 200 disappear one day. :-> Then we'll have tons of posts in the forum about where'd my photos go and rants about having to cough up the money for the paid service to see them all.

Of course, if Microsoft buys Yahoo, we'll all be borged. C'est la vie, as we Americans are wont to say.

You say my beef is with ATT/Yahoo and NOT here on Flickr? But here on Flickr IS Yahoo. It's Yahoo's new photo service. Flickr=Yahoo, yes? Seems like the longtime Flickr folks may not want to admit this, but looking through the threads, it seems like lots of long time Flickr members are already grumbling about the Yahoo-ization of the site.

Well, since the reported cutoff date for Yahoo Photos is in September, I suppose lots of things could happen in the interim. Maybe things will get better, or perhaps worse. I'll just have to wait and see. C'est la vie indeed....

dwaine: yahoo owns Flickr, it didn't create the service. There's a big difference between the things Yahoo makes internally, and the things it buys. The internal stuff basically sucks, thus they've taken to buying more and more things instead. So if someone has a problem with Yahoo photo, that's yahoo, not flickr. if they have a problem with how yahoo is handling its closure of yahoo photo, that's also still yahoo, not flickr.

Once they get here, and can't figure out how to make sets or organize their photos, well then it's finally Flickr.

I'd like video. I shoot small video clips using the same devices I take photographs with, and I need somewhere to share and backup the clips as well as the photos. It makes sense to do this in one place, as the events/places described in the clips often overlaps with the ones covered by the photos. I've been looking for (yet another!!) web site on which to store these clips, hopefully I can just use flickr.

Emphasize photography, but allow video as well. I wouldn't mind if you had to be a pro user to upload video. :) And you could, as people have suggested, have a "Do not ever show me anything related to video clips"-filter for those who have fundamental issues with this.

Don't hold your breath on this one as if you do a search on this topic in these forums you will find many topics on it along with people wanting music on Flickr and the consensus of opinion is that Flickr is a photo sharing site not a video or music sharing site and the majority don't want it. Use something like You Tube which is dedicated to it and link photos too it and videos to photos.

I couldn't agree more.

I can't navigate places like youtube or myspace, without coming over all nauseous. I just checked out myspace to see if I could remember the email/password of the account there (i cant) and was assulted by flashing gifs, annoying muzak, and images of emos.

If you want that sort of stuff then surely sites like myspace are perfect places to put them. Host the stills over here, the videos on youtube, and combine it all with the other tat on myspace. You'll get to reach a wider and more discerning audience that way.
