Lake St. Peter
![Lake St. Peter HDR [2]](http://farm1.static.flickr.com/46/111717653_71c72f59b8.jpg)
Our cottage is on Lake St. Peter, east of Algonquin Park on the western reaches of the Ottawa Valley, in north-eastern Ontario. The lake is quite varied in depth and has two large sections. The lake is known for its provincial park and has been the subject of one (or more) of the Group of Seven's paintings. We are only 1/2-hour from the entrance gate of Algonquin Park and 40-minutes away from the Visitor centre.
Lake St. Peter is smaller than most lakes, but has been a popular cottaging lake for many years. This is related to the fact that the government released good, cheap crown land in the mid-40s. They offered 2-acre, water-access lots for $1,000. The only stipulation was that the buyer build before winter. As a result this has been a recreational lake for many years.
Our cottage was built in 1945 and love the fact that it has so much history. It is small; the electrical is "antiquated"; and our family loves it.
There are plenty of stories I would love to capture of people who live on the lake. For instance, our neighbours met as teenagers on the lake in 1961. They married and until 2 years ago cottaged in a 2-room cabin at the end of our bay. They raised 2 children and visited the cabin for almost 40 years before they rebuilt it into a size suitable for their children and grand-children.
Our cottage has gone through many hands before we acquired it. A journalist for the Toronto Star owned the place before we bought it. He thought it would be a quiet, peaceful place to write his columns. I think he found out the place was more suited for play than work.
We already have a lifetime of memories from this place.

Otty Lake
Eastern Ontario, just outside Perth
It's a landlocked lake (spring fed, with a non-navigable outflow to the Tay River), today a popular cottaging lake with an increasing amount of permanent homes. There is great concern about further development as the suburbs of Perth are starting to encroach on the lake. By the 70s the lake was in pretty rough shape, an ill conceived dam on the outflow raised water levels and pollution was taking it's toll, luckily the dam was removed and the pollution situation is much improved and the lake has bounced back a fair way.

This is at tiny Musselmen's Lake, north of Toronto, but this corner reminded me vividly of the Atchafalaya Basin in the Louisiana delta. Thankfully, very few gators here...

This is a small lake just north of Sault Ste. Marie. It is commonly know as Lower Island Lake (yes, there is an Upper Island Lake), but some of the people on the lake have taken to calling it "Long Wind Lake", as per some property deeds.
