About Your Prized Possessions - Sharing Our Cultural Heritage
About Your Prized Possessions, Our Prized Possessions and National Treasures
The State Library of WA hosted the National Treasures from Australia’s Great Libraries and the Our Prized Possessions Exhibits in Perth, WA from 30th June to 27th August 2007. These exhibitions highlighted how cultural treasures help to bring our Australian history to life and to tell different stories and perspectives.
These exhibits showed us how important the collecting and preserving of objects, books, manuscripts, maps, ephemera (ticket stubs, flyers, invitations etc), paintings, films, audios and photos can be to our understanding of who we are and the defining moments in our history.
During these exhibitions you got to tell us about Your Prized Possessions by entering our competition and six of these items were displayed alongside the Our Prized Possession exhibits.
The Your Prized Possession Flickr site is LIVE and with your contributions can become a place where you can tell us about the treasures or prized possessions you have that link you to a defining moment of time, place and destiny!!
The State Library of WA has a special focus on collecting and preserving the cultural heritage of West Australians in our JS Battye Library and so we would especially love for you to take up this opportunity for you to tell us what your cultural treasures are and why.
Have a look at some of our Treasures from the Battye Library a collection of our prized possessions and the stories they tell about our early adventurers, explorers, settlers and our convict past.
WE WOULD LIKE YOU TO TELL US ABOUT A SPECIAL ITEM OF YOURS ON THIS YOUR PRIZED POSSESSIONS GROUP
Do you have a local treasure:- an object, person or possession prized for its power to link us to times past, present and future. It might be something old, something new, something you’ve been given or something you've found, a family heirloom or a memento that’s been made especially for you. It can be just about anything at all, regardless of its monetary value or historical importance.
To add your item to the Your Prized Possessions flickr group:
1.) Select your treasure or prized possession from your home, school or community that is important to you.
2.) Photograph it and upload it onto the Flickr Your Prized Possessions group (load it into your personal account area and use “You; Organise” to move to the group)
3.) Add the tags that best describe Your Prized Possession. This might include:
· The type of object it is (book, manuscript, monument, and memento)
· A location tag - where it comes from or where you come from.
(NB: Use the quotation marks to keep a phrase together as one tag)
4.) Once your photo has been loaded you will be taken to the “Describe Your Photo” page, use the ‘Title’ field to give your entry a title, and the ‘Description’ field to paste in your 300 word description of Your Prized Possession. You can also double check the ‘tags’ you have given your entry from this page.
5.) Once your photo has been loaded in go to “You” and select “Organise” to move the photo into the flickr “Your Prized Possession” group area. (Make sure you have joined the group first)
