YOUR MUM RANG™ HISTORY
Any body who knows the work of SOLO-ONE (UK) or SHEPARD FAIREY (OBEY - USA) would know that the profusion of the sticker tag is one of the most advantageous and time-economical ways of getting up. You can prepare hundreds of ready-made stickers for an evening out and then return relatively hands clean.
This application of adhesive matter is still called criminal damage because of the removal costs and mess left on the streets. Lots of street surfaces are really dirty (especially in cities), making any adhesive difficult to get to work. The POST-IT™ has temporary adhesive technology on the sticky tab. This method of fixing messages outdoors is not illegal, akin only to littering or dropping vigarette butts, as the notes can be removed easily. No damage caused.
The first POST-IT™ note that got decorated with a 'YOUR MUM RANG' slogan was at a launch at the GLOBAL CAFE in Golden Square (Wednesday 1st August 2001). It was a Beat13 event with a show of work by the lovely Lucy McLaughlan. CHU was there with Stef, and were ready for going out, setting off to FORM later and stuff, just hanging out. It was then that a few notes made it out of the barrel. CHU had got hold of some for making notes at home on the wall.
These notes were on original 3M product, 'POST-ITS'™. Superior glue, and a more light-fast yellow. They seem more hardy to the weather and stick better to surfaces for longer than other imitation office notes. Soon after that CHU progressed to large consignments of POST-ITs™. They were £4.75 for 800! from an office supply store on Ffrith Street, Marble Arch. This was during the time CHU lived with SOLO ONE at the Wharf Rd squat, in Paddington Green (another story!).
CHU was taking out around 200 notes each day and plastered any surface possible such as the streets and shops, people and vehicles, aswell as venues holding launch parties and club nights at The Medicine Bar, 333, Pool Bar, Embassy, and loads of others attended during that heady summer of 2001 in East London™. All on POST-IT™ notes!
Realising the potential of the adhesive format, and the desire people have for things they can 'use', it wasn't long before CHU began to get the messages printed traditionally via silk-screen onto vinyl, or litho onto paper. These were then circulated around the country and the message spread into peoples homes and decorated their own neighbourhoods. For xmas one year, CHU gave away cards having the 'Your Mum Rang' emblem on the front, with a small red sticker on the inside cover, whenever he met them. This ensured the cards placement on fireplaces, bar shelves and other places usually out of reach of the average styler.
