Do you lend your books to others ? Has it been a good experience for you?

I've lent some of my books to friends and acquaintances and I usually have a hard time getting them back. I know--I could keep a record etc. Lately, however, I cringe when someone asks me to lend them the book they see me reading.

Do you lend your books? Do you get them back easily? How do you do that?

uh...well, i warn the person to give me the book back. sounds a little mean, lol, but it isn't. i have a way of making it sound rather polte if anything. but, simple thing really, if you've lend a book out and you know what they are like then dont give it to them. or if it is to someone you have never lent a book to, then tell them it is available from a library or that you are currently using it for something, that works for me.
however, there are many times i've had to say no because someone has either bent or ruined the book (in one case beyond recognition)...

You might want to check the thread started by kcinfocus called
"Don't You Just Hate Lending Books?!" because it also addresses the good and bad experiences some have had when lending books :-)

I don't, um, turn anyone on with my book-lending, as far as I'm aware, but I do do it. Only to certain people, though - my brother, who I live with and thus can't run off with them, a guy I work with who likes reading as much as I do, and my best mate, who last time I lent him something managed to cover it in raspberry-and-orange juice and offered the excuse that, 'I had to keep it in my backpack to take it into work!', but did buy a new one for me (though it's not the SAME, is it?). He'll have to do something or other to convince me it's safe to lend one again...

Unless it's a particularly nice edition, I don't have a problem lending books provided the person is a genuine lover to reading. That's all I ask.

Very rarely, as i learnt my losses of books outweighed my emotional gains. Now I only lend books I'm willing to lose.

But if i do lend - I have created a simple bookmark in word. It goes with the book.

" I borrowed this book from Winston on...........
And I will return it by ..................... "

A little bit of clipart or something to pretty it up and no one gets offended. Acts as a constant reminder to the borrower.

Here it is, note the top bit (I keep) which allows me to keep track of what I have lent out.

well, I lost some of my favourite books this way, but it is great if you have a really good book and you can talk with your friends about it. I think this more important than holding them back.

I have a fair sized private library and lend out my books constantly. Knowledge is meant to be shared. 98% of the time I get my books back. I only lend books to people I know will read them and return them.

Word is a virus meant to be spread.

If it's a book I really, really like and really, really don't want to lose, I buy a second copy for lending. Otherwise, I'm not too worried about it, and there are some books I give to people with the encouragement for them to give it to someone else when they're done.

I really like Winston's bookmark idea. Might have to borrow that one.
Thanks for mentioning it, Winston.

Not anymore. They never came back in good condition and I ended up replacing them. Would've been easier to just buy my friends a copy of what they wanted to read.

I've lent books in the past and regretted it when they didn't come home. Now, I still lend, but only books I won't miss if they aren't returned.

I used to but not anymore, and never my hardbacks. If a friend is interested in a book I'm reading, I'll go out a buy them a copy as a gift.

I've had the same experience. One of my "friends" borrowed a book from me and then moved to Tennessee, never returning it. Now, I make people who want to borrow books from me sign a contract, saying that if the book isn't returned by a certain date and in the form I lent it to them, they either have to buy me a new copy or give me the money so I can buy it myself. That works pretty well, because no one wants to pay someone for a book they had only intended to borrow.

Not anymore.... my parents lent some of my books, to people who never returned them.
You MIGHT be able to read some of my books, at my own home.
Forget about having the privilege with the Faulkner ones... or Joyce. Those are "unlendable" (those, I might give as a b'day present to family and very close friends:)

I only lend out books that I don't really value. Generally paperbacks I hate or are old enough to consider replacing. With more valuable/cherished books I'll often say NO!, which never goes down well, but I usually make a mental note of the title and eventually gift a copy. Unless it was ridiculously expensive, obviously.

It's great to have books in common with people really.

I lent half my books I guess... actually the more I like a book the more I want to share it with my friends. and the more sorry I am later when I don't get it back.
I really loved winston's solution with the marker.
my solution was more of the spaceship type - I made a web site for lending and borrowing site - just google "Traxtuff" if you are interested :)
now I lend and borrow much more, BUT since the site is young I guess I still wait to see if it really works - that is if knowing where my stuff is will guarantee that it does come back to me...

I give away my books through Bookcrossing.com... there are only a limited number of books I keep in my permanent collection these days. I only have a select couple of friends that I will lend a book to and have never had a problem getting them back because of my thorough screening. ;)

When I was little I lent some of my books to my second cousin and got them back a year later, after I had forgotten about them. I guess she remembered them before the next family reunion.

I lent my first copy of the first four books of the Hitchhiker's trilogy to a boy I had a crush on, and he never gave it back. I have hounded him for two years about it and he keeps making excuses, like "well I gave it to my roommate who was in your class which is the one that you dropped" and ignores my facebook messages. I've been half-tempted to call up his place of employment and talk to him on the phone, or leave a note, because there's no other way to get ahold of him. That book has special meaning as it was sent to me from England by my first boyfriend... but at this point, I've sorta given up hope of ever seeing it again.

Now, I lend books with the intent of giving them away to the person who reads it. And that's usually what happens, as the person loves the book so much I tell them to keep it.
