About Yorkshire Dales National Park: Three Peaks

The Three Peaks area of the Yorkshire Dales National Park is internationally famous for its limestone landscape, associated vegetation and the three mountains – Pen-y-ghent, Ingleborough and Whernside. Together these factors produce stunning scenery, and over 60% of the entire region is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest or a National Nature Reserve.

These natural features have always made the Three Peaks area a popular place for outdoor recreation. Over a quarter of a million people access the Three Peaks every year to stroll around the villages or to challenge themselves to complete the 26-mile, strenuous trip over all three peaks in 12 hours or less. Many also head underground to the UK’s most dramatic and extensive cave system that includes the Gaping Gill chamber, which is big enough to contain St. Paul’s Cathedral.

You can also help maintain the network of well-trodden paths in the area and the unique biodiversity by becoming a Friend of the Three Peaks – visit our website for details.
