About Wildflowers of the Yellowstone Ecosystem
Bears, geysers and....wildflowers?
Yellowstone National Park, USA, is a perfect place to glory in mountain wildflowers. Many of the millions of visitors to the first US national park eventually learn to lower their gaze, and when they do they see the wonders of wildflowers spread out before them. Then they want to learn their names...and that is what this group is all about -- a resource to visitors, naturalists and the generally curious who want to look deeper into the Yellowstone wildflower world.
What is the Yellowstone Ecosystem? Flower seeds know no boundaries, and species that occur in the northern Rocky Mountains above 1800 meters or so, and in the southern Rockies above 2200 meters, are certainly survivable in Yellowstone. Of course, there are introduced species from even further afield.
Rules? Who needs them? But let me offer an important idea to prospective members: please try to make your contributions useful! I will reluctantly remove mis-identified or mis-located photos because I want this group to be a useful resource, not because I don't like your photo (and not just to be mean). Please post photos that meet the above criteria in this group...along with, obviously, any photos taken within park boundaries. So that photos will be useful, please post as much of the following data as you can with each photo: binomial name, family name, common name(s), color, petal numbers, state, county and geotag. While we recognize that this much data may be "over the top" for casual flower fans -- please make some effort to include as much as you can. You will add immensely to the value of the resource.
Unknown flowers are welcome long as they meet the ecosystem criteria and are clearly labeled as "Unknown" by including that word in the title. Please include date and location information in the photo description so that people can help determine an ID. Perhaps group members can help identify your flower.
For other help identifying plants/flowers try Wildflowers, or the flickr group ID Please. If you've already got a name and want to verify, USDA Plants database.
