About Yeadon Tarn
Photos old or new of Yeadon Tarn, Leeds.
Nestled between Yeadon High Street and the runway of Leeds Bradford Airport, Yeadon Tarn is a small, beautiful lake populated by Mallard ducks, swans and Canada geese, surrounded by a pathway 0.9km long that is ideal for short walks.
There's also small sailing centre and the tarn is sometimes used for fishing (although the fish stay away from the vachts) and often by plane spotters. There are two car parks, a BMX park, picnic areas and a nice park with climbing frames, swings etc. for kids.
According to Wikipedia "the word [Tarn] is derived from the Old Norse word tjörn meaning pond. Its more specific use as a mountain lake emerges as it is the commonly used term for all ponds in the mountainous areas of Northern England, particularly Cumbria. Here, it retains a broader use, referring to any small lake or pond, regardless of its location and origin...
In Scandinavian languages a tjern or tjärn, tärn or tjørn is a small natural lake, often in a forest or with vegetation close around it or growing into the lake."

During the Second World War the tarn was drained to prevent enemy aircraft using its reflection as a landmark to identify the nearby Avro factory.
