About Elephant Families of Yala
The purpose of this group is to update the demographics of the Yala elephant families. The Centre for Conservation Research has been studying the Yala elephant population since the early 90's.
Given the widespread use of digital cameras and ease of online access, we would like invite you all to be part of a citizen science initiative by tagging your photos of elephant families (herds) in Yala to this group.
Any picture where elephants are visible is fine, we are not concerned about photo quality, and want to see the picture for record purposes. A clear shot of the ears, head, etc would be great.
Yala elephant population is in crisis, those of you who have been regulars visitors to the park may have notices a reduction in elephant herd sightings of late.
This decline is the result of the electric fence being put up in 2005 and the elephants driven into Yala from the buffer zone area outside. The park cannot support so many elephants, and therefore you see the reduction in numbers as well as the condition of the animals.
Please keep posting to this groups so we can keep track of individuals, and you can get to know them as well.
Regards,
