12 Feb 08 - Welcome to Minolta XD. We thank you for visiting us and hope that you will elect to join this small group of photographers who enjoy the satisfaction of owning and shooting the Minolta XD's. This group is open to people who shoot with the XD11, the XD7 (European designation of the XD11), the XD5, the XD or the XDS. We aren't overly burdened with rules and will probably always be a small intimate group where we can get to know each other better than is possible in some of the large groups.

About Minolta XD

This group is intended to provide a showcase for any photographs taken with the trusty XD11, XD7, XD5, XD, or XDS cameras. Please try to provide us with the type of lens that you used for the shot and the film. You may post two shots per day. And commenting on others' photos is, of course, encouraged.

XD-7, cardinal red goat skin
This beautiful Minolta XD7 belongs Peter Serbe. It is is from the same generation as the Olympus OM-1, the Nikon FM2 and the Canon AE-1 and was built to the same demanding specs to compete head-to-head with those legendary cameras. Minolta considered the XD-11 (called the XD-7 in Europe) its flagship at the time. The finish on the black XDs was not paint, as it was on Nikons, Canons and Olympuses. Instead that finish was anodized black chrome, which Minolta licensed the use of from Leitz. The XD-7/11 was developed by Minolta in conjunction with Leica, and the body became the basis for the Leica R4, and later, as the chassis for the the Leica R5, R6 and R7.

This camera was never built to take a mercury cell and, therefore, the batteries for this are the widely available Eveready 357's. It has both aperture and shutter priority and will work on a dead battery in either "B" or "O", the latter providing a 1/100 exposure.
