"Wave Organ"
-- from Koocheekoo - (?)
California, San Francisco (October 2006) - by Peter Richards and George Gonzales 1986
Sponsered by the Exploratorium and dedicated to Frank Oppenheimer.
Sound is created by the movement of waves in and out of a series of pipes extending into the water. They also used old mauseleum stones and PVP piping in creating the wave organ.

"Florida to Alaska on a Bicycle [#1] April 1st - Starting Point: Largo, Florida"

Largo, Florida (April 1st, 1997) - In 1997 I took a 6 month long bicycle trip from Florida to Alaska. I'll be posting the story here on flickr.
- April 1st, 1997 - I sat on a bicycle in my driveway in Largo, Florida. The bike was loaded with camping equipment and supplies that tipped the scale at 150 pounds. As I pulled out of my driveway I had really no idea of what to expect - I just started riding - with distant thoughts of someday ending up in Alaska... read the whole story.

"Florida to Alaska on Bicycle (#18) May 1, 1997: Natchez State Park Campground

Begining of the Natchez Trace Parkway: Campground - Natchez State Park, Mississippi (May 1, 1997) A typical camping spot found in state parks... (#18) back
In 1997 I rode a bicycle from Florida to Alaska. I'm posting the story here on flickr
...Having made it to Natchez State Park, I felt I was beginning an entirely new chapter. The Natchez Trace itself was something I had wanted to explore long ago. A desire of mine that existed independent of my bike to Alaska plans, now was a part of the same trip. The trail is one created many thousands of years ago. Created by the footsteps of animals and ancient hunters, countless years of walking has eroded the land into what, in many areas, is a large ditch several feet deep. The Natchez, Chickasaw, and Choctaw Indians used it for many years – as did the Spanish, French, and then America settlers...read the whole story.

"Florida to Alaska on Bicycle (#50) June 9, 1997: Field of Dreams Movie Site"

Dyersville, Iowa (June 9, 1997) - "Field of Dreams" movie site. I didn't even know this was here. I just stumbled upon it...(#50) back
In 1997 I rode a bicycle from Florida to Alaska. I'm posting the story here on flickr.
I am, once again, in the Mississippi River flood plain, a very flat low-lying terrain. My path takes me three miles off the main road to a free campground on the Mississippi River called Blanchard Island. There, I meet this guy camping who, it turns out, lives in the area and is just camping out at different spots for the hell of it. Barry Wakeland is 18 and I hang out with him and drink beer and make fires. His girlfriend and sister work in a factory across the river in Muscatine, Iowa - a large city for what I've been used to with a population of almost 40,000. I will be passing through Muscatine when I leave, but I get a preview of the city several times as I drive with Barry to town to get beer or to take his girlfriend to work. They live in Illinois, but their postal addresses are for Iowa. The Illinois side of the river is so sparsely populated. I wind up hanging out with them for two days and three nights. It is the first time on my trip I really hang with the locals. I meet Barry's father, Pete and a friend of theirs, Jim. We went out to a piece of property they bought with money Barry's aunt won on a Mississippi River boat. We did 360's in an old truck on the property and partied some more with Pete, Michelle, at the campground. I could have ended up staying there forever if I didn't eventually motivate myself to leave. It was too easy to stay, since I was having so much fun. Barry wanted me to go to some races on June 8th, three days after arriving there. I wanted to but I had to get going...read the whole story.

The first time I came to the Big Island of Hawai'i, in 1995, this was the place I stayed. It was on the north shore near the end of the highway at Pololu at the bottom of Rick and Sophie's garden. It was very small and the shower was a hose, but it's a beautiful area. There are no lights nearby and one of my greatest memories is of seeing millions of stars - I had never seen so many stars before.
This building was completely destroyed in the earthquake of October 15th 2006.

Rugby, North Dakota (July 3, 1997) The geographical center of North America...(#70) back | next
In 1997 I rode a bicycle from Florida to Alaska. I'm posting the story here on flickr.
JULY - The Great Plains and into Canada
July 1st. I have been traveling three months now. I am in Minnewaukan, North Dakota, on a cold, very windy, very rainy day. A group from an organized Adventure Cycling tour, going from Seattle to Maine pulled into the park some time after I arrived. The entire landscape has been altered in this area due to flooding. The park lies on the shore of a very large lake. On the map, the lake is nowhere near the city, much less the park. Entire roads have been swallowed up, and new boundaries have been drawn on maps. This would be the only time heading west, that the wind would be blowing from the East. I could ride with a strong wind at my back today, but I choose to take my day off.
Tonight would be even worse as far as the weather went. Gale force winds tossed and crushed my tent all night. I had to leave the tent to pound the stakes back in as several were uprooted. By the following morning, the wind had calmed down, but the nagging rain remained. I put on my full rain suit for the very first time. I even had the hood on under my helmet. It was so windy, cold, and wet. Heading west on highway 19 through the strong winds and rain was miserable. When the rain finally subsided a bit, I was greeted by a medium sized, brown dog. He started playing chase and run with me about 8 -10 miles from Esmond. He would run this way then that, and followed me all the way to Esmond. ...read the whole story.

Scanned photo. Telephoto shot from across Zion Canyon in Zion National Park, Utah. We hiked the Angel's Landing trail to Scout Lookout (elevation: 5,350 ft/1,631 m), where I took this photo of a sheer mountain face across the valley about 2,000 feet above the canyon floor. Notice the size of the trees for scale.

'Ohi'a lehua tree - Mauna Loa - Hawai'i
Metrosideros polymorpha - Hawaiian endemic. This 'Ohi'a lehua tree is at about the 2,000 metre elevation on Mauna Loa, the Big Island of Hawai'i.
The wood is hard and can be used for making furniture. Traditionally, the bark and young leaves were used medicinally.
Versatile and hardy, the 'Ohi'a can grow in dry lava fields and is often the first tree to grow in new lava fields.
