We got up early to climb Dune 45 in Namibia. I felt so lucky to also have seen the dunes in such a beautiful light.

In the foreground is a 900 year old skeleton of a dead camelthorn acacia tree. The lifeless trees in this parched and bleached white former lake pan are the reason this vlei was named "Dead Vlei." In the background is one of the world's tallest sand dunes "Big Daddy." AKA "Crazy Dune."
The summit of "Big Daddy" is 245m above the vlei.
Dead Vlei is 1.2km across and approximately 570m above sea level.

Kolmanskop
van dyck print

In 1908, Lüderitz was plunged into diamond fever. People rushed into the Namib desert hoping to make an easy fortune and within two years, a town, Kolmanskop, complete with a casino, school, hospital and exclusive residential buildings, had been established in the barren sandy desert. Over 1000 kg of diamonds were extracted before World War I. However, the amount of gemstones greatly diminished after the war. Furthermore, considerably larger diamonds were found to the south near Oranjemund, causing Kolmanskop to become a ghost town.

Young Springbok Antelope, Etosha National Park

Etosha National Park in Namibia was first established in 1907, when Namibia was a German colony known as South West Africa. At the time, the park’s original 100,000 km² (38,500 mile²) made it the largest game reserve in the world.

Aloe dichotoma, also known as quiver tree or kokerboom, is a species of aloe indigenous to South Africa, specifically in the Northern Cape region, and Namibia. Its vernacular name comes from the fact that its branches and bark are used by the bushmen to make quiver for their arrows. Modeling of Aloe dichotoma in South Africa and Namibia has contributed to understanding of protected area needs in response to climate change. Known as Choje to the indigenous San people, the quiver tree gets its name from the San practice of hollowing out the tubular branches of Aloe dichotoma to form quivers for their arrows.

These shots were taken near Keetmanshoop, in a spectacular field called "Giant's Playground" because of the huge boulders piled as if a giant had played with them.

The kudu and giraffe agonised for ages over whether to risk drinking here, as there was a sleeping lion at the far side of the waterhole. In the end, thirst won out. The giraffe is in the worst position to make a quick getaway!
