Maldives, officially the Republic of Maldives, is an island nation consisting of a group of atolls in the Indian Ocean. The Maldives are located south of India's Lakshadweep islands, and about seven hundred kilometers (435 mi) south-west of Sri Lanka. The twenty-six atolls encompass a territory featuring 1,192 islets, roughly two hundred of which are inhabited by people. The country's name may stand for "Mountain Islands" (malai in Tamil, meaning "mountain" and teevu in Tamil meaning "island") or it may mean "a thousand islands". Some scholars believe that the name "Maldives" derives from the Sanskrit maladvipa, meaning "garland of islands", or from "mahila dvipa", meaning "island of women". Others believe the name means "palace" (from Mahal in Arabic).
Following the introduction of Islam in 1153, the islands later became a Portuguese (1558), Dutch (1654), and British (1887) colonial possession. In 1965, Maldives obtained independence from Britain (originally under the name "Maldive Islands"), and in 1968 the Sultanate was replaced by a Republic. However, in 38 years, the Maldives have had only two Presidents, though political restrictions have loosened somewhat recently.
Maldives is the smallest Asian country in terms of population. It is also the smallest predominantly Muslim nation in the world...more

In the Maldives, the British Red Cross will spend approximately £17 million on reconstruction and livelihood projects over the next two years.
The recovery programme will provide homes for local communities, benefiting at least 4,600 people on six islands across three atolls, Laamu (Maabaidhoo, Isdhoo-Kalaidhoo, Fonadhoo), Meemu (Kolhufushi) and Thaa (Madafushi, Vilufushi),
Up to 744 houses will be constructed across the six islands and they will be provided with environmental and socially acceptable water and sanitation facilities.

Traditionally fishery is the main occupation and major livelihood of the Maldivians. It is also the second largest industry in the Maldives. The main methods of fishing are pole and line for skipjack tuna. Surface trolling is done for little tuna. The second most important fish caught is the yellowfin tuna (Thunus albacaraes). The main fish products exported are; frozen fish, canned fish, dried fish and salted dry fish. The traditional fishing vessel is a sailing dhoni not about less than 15 feet long. Thatch sail were also used in the early days of fishing. Clothe sails and rowing is common in traditional fishing practice. The Maldivan fishery is famous in the world for its dolphin friendliness.
In the past Maldives exported tuna primarily in the dried and smoked form called hiki kandumas or 'Maldive Fish' to Sri Lanka. Maldives also exported other form of fish products to Japan and Thailand.

Ricordo di un viaggio bellissimo, da qualche parte nell'atollo di Ari: la barca che si vede in lontananza è stata la mia casa per 1 settimana..
Memory of a beautiful travel, I was in the atoll of Ari : the boat that is looked at in distance has been my house for 1 week..

Well... Maakurathu is one of the beautiful island in Raa Atoll, Maldives.
Simply I call the island one & only 5 star island in the Maldives ( which means the real island of maldives ) which is struggling for the development of a harbor & various other developments etc.
My father was born in this beautiful island and I do have many relatives & friends in this beautiful island and I use to visit the island once in a while, when I'm in holiday.
