Park(ing) Day is a one-day, global event centered in San Francisco where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into “Park(ing)” spaces: temporary public places.
The mission of Park(ing) Day is to call attention to the need for more urban open space, generate critical debate regarding how public space is created and allocated, and improve the quality of urban human habitat … at least until the meter runs out!
A quintessentially “open source” project, Park(ing) Day has been adapted and remixed to address specific social issues in a variety of urban contexts around the world. Since its inception in 2005, Park(ing) Day has expanded to include a broad range of interventions well beyond the basic “tree-bench-sod” park typology first modeled by Rebar. In recent years, participants around the world have built interventions ranging from a free health clinic, urban farming and ecology demonstrations, political seminars, art installations, a free bike repair shop and even a wedding ceremony.
Park(ing) Day has effectively re-valued the metered parking space as an important part of the commons - a site for generosity, expression, socializing and play. And although comprised of temporary interventions, Park(ing) Day has inspired direct participation in the civic processes that permanently alter the urban landscape on a number of occasions.
