About Wood Engraving

This group is for the dissemination of images and information concerning the art and craft of engraving on wood for the purpose of the printed image. Widely popularized by Thomas Bewick in England, and Alexander Anderson in America in the 1790s, this careful craft was the primary method of book and magazine illustration for 100 years. It survived the advent of photo-engraving processes by the diligent and precise work of trade engravers, and was adopted as an art medium in the early 20th century by artists drawn to the clean crisp lines and the dramatic darks and lights made in the surface of the wood. Images from all periods, old and modern, are welcome as long as credit is given to artist (when known) and engraver, and the source and date of the image. Images of tools used in the process and studio space, as well as photos of wood-engravers themselves are welcomed. This site is limited only to images that deal with wood-engraving (the art of engraving by hand on the end-grain of hardwoods), rather than woodcuts (which are cut on the plank), or laser engravings and other processes that are not autographic. Welcome.
