About Temple Newsam House - Restoration Project 2009
This group documents the restoration of Mr Cutt's Room and Sir John Ramsden's Dressing Room at Temple Newsam House, Leeds.
History
The rooms have been restored with the support of a £72,000 grant from the DCMS/Wolfson Foundation Museums and Galleries Improvement Fund/Building on Success which enabled these two rooms (and a third, the Darnley Room) to be restored to their eighteenth century appearance.
It has taken well over eighteen months to complete the project which involved a huge team of experts including curators, conservators, carpet weavers and hand printed wallpaper makers.
The rooms are in the oldest parts of the House which dates back 500 years. Using evidence from inventories, bills, scraps of wallpaper and material the rooms have been returned to their late eighteenth century appearance.
Restoration
The focus of the restoration of these rooms is to undo the damage done during the late 1930’s, when the interiors were altered to make Temple Newsam a suitable space for displaying art works. Both rooms have had replacement fireplaces, wallpapers, curtains and carpets to bring the rooms back to life as close as possible to their 1760s appearance.
