Target0008 - London Stone

Time has clearly not been kind to this location. St. Swithins church was pulled down 1967 but the stone was kept in place. There was also a really obvious change in the height of the street level, I reckon a good 7-8 inches difference between the original and today.

Missed a bit of the tree, but like the way the runner has replaced the nicely dressed man. Very appropriate.

The fire station and 'Old Street' in Shorditch have moved slightly, leaving the old firehouse from 1926 as a rather trendy bar (which doesn't have any dessert). Most of the exterior features are still intact including the dedication plaque and doors.

One of the more difficult shots for the group, the original 1926 photo was shot from what is now the centre of the road in Oxford Street. Trying to take a photo from the centre of the road in Oxford Street nowadays is much like jumping off a cliff, in that it has a high chance of making you quite dead.

Thankfully not much has changed in the 80-odd years since the original was taken. A few traffic bollards (which do seem to be spreading throughout the country), a few new trees and a bit of a change to the road but this landmark still does remain in a 'quiet corner' of London.

The Royal Exchange remains the same, the Bank has had a few modifications and there is a statue on the right of the Exchange of James Henry Greathead, inventor of the Greathead tunneling shield. Apart from that and the rather large buildings that have sprung up behind, nothing has changed. Well, you can't climb up the Mansion House steps to get the height the original photographer did these days.

I couldn't get into the office building on the corner of Cornhill and King William Street (which I think was there at the time of the original photograph and looks to be the place where it was shot from), but this pretty much lines up. The central building (Mappin & Webb) was pulled down in 1994 and replaced with the pink thing that is No 1 Poultry (where I used to work). The Mansion House abides.

"I suspect the original was taken from a little further away with a longer lens, but it's hard to tell. It was also from slightly further to the left, but that woould have meant standing in a flower bed with a big bush stright in front!
Whilst the Pagoda itself hasn't changed, it looks like a lot of the vegetation has been cleared so it is all rather more open today.
Just as I was finishing taking a few shots a mum and her two daughters walked by, so I took the plunge and asked her and the youngest one to pose!"

We weren't too sure about this one. Whilst the gate certainly looks similar to one in the original, the buildings in the background clearly don't look right. The gates were locked so we couldn't get in to look around to see if there was a more accurate spot so if you think you can get a better one, go for it.
The stone wall in the 1926 photo has been replaced with something which looks like a fence from a prison yard, which judging by the seedyness of the area nowadays is probably a good thing.

Target0063 - Scotland Yard

This was an interesting one to do. The building in the photo now forms part of the cabinet office and security is naturally quite tight what with all the MPs and cabinet staff working there - permission was needed to photograph the site.
It remained the headquarters for the metropolitan police until 1967 when 'the yard' moved to its present location of 10 Broadway. This complex is now a grade 1 listed building.

Target0052 - Downing Street

This one was completed thanks to PC Lewton and a few of the other people in the relevant places. Getting access to the street was rather nervewracking, but was really worthwhile, it is kept unbelievably neat and tidy and there is a quietness down there that makes you forget you're in central London. It was like walking back in time as English Heritage have been rightfully anal about what can and can't be changed. The streetlights are the originals that stood in the 1926 version of the photo.
One of the officers in the street explained that the brickwork of the building is actually yellow which is painted black to reproduce the dirtying effect of the smog back in the 1800's.
As for changes, there has been many, but not a lot are visible. During the blitz in World War II, a bomb exploded in Treasury Green, damaging the kitchen and some of the state rooms of number 10. Repairs were undertaken and Churchill moved back in immediately after the war was over.
In the 50s it was decided to gut number 10 and restrengthen as the bomb damage had increased existing structural problems. It was during this time number 12 was rebuilt.
It would appear that it wasn't until some time during the premiership of Margaret Thatcher that the heavy front gates which now restrict access to the street were added.

Well 80 years has seen a lot of tree growth; it now completely obscures the dome! Incredibly the paths are stlll the same, including the unofficial one through the grass! Complete fluke with the couple walking through the shot this morning..makes a great link with the original, though...

Target 0014 - Greenwich Public Clock

Although the clock is definitely the same, everything else has changed. There is no wall surrounding it now, only an iron fence. The dials and gauges at the bottom have been added, and there are now a strange outcropping of skyscrapers in the background...;) The pathway has also been altered, as - unless the man in the orginal picture is 7' tall - it is no longer possible to stand at that height in front of the clock.

Target 0070 - Libertys

Unsurprisingly given it's uniqueness and location, this place is barely altered in 80 years. The major change is to the front where some of the white panels have been painted (or covered over) black and the new store sign is in white and protrudes from the surface.
It's still a posh store, so I'm guessing inside it's changed somewhat... The big difference in these photos is the thousands of people walking around, I could try again on a Tuesday morning, but I think you'd still hit the crowds, to replicate the original you'd have to wait till Christmas day or something.
I'm not too impressed with my version of this shot, the other one seems to have been take from a few metres closer and a bit to the left, but it's probably near enough.

Once again, not a massive amount of change here, the layout of Fish Street Hill remains almost identical to as it was in 1926. The spire of St. Magnus the Martyr still clearly visible. It does look as though the monument got a new sign at some point though.

The reason I've not cropped this one exactly as the original is because if you look at the large size of my photo you'll see a framed photo on the wall that is the original from 1926 :)

Strand Lane (Target 0072)

Even though things don't look much different from this picture, both ends have now been sealed off and the only public entrance is from the Surrey Steps via Surrey Street. When I took the picture on the left there was a lot of workmen around doing work in Kings College which has an entrance behind where I was standing, towards the Strand.
In Strand Lane there are some 'Roman' baths but doing a Google on them and looking on the National Trust website (who manage the baths) they probably date from the Tudor times. I did have a look through the window there and tried to take a few pictures, but they were very dirty and I could not see much.

Peter seems to have a shorter neck and his haircut is in need of attention aswell, could be 81 years of London weather on bronze or it could be that my photo is at a slightly off angle to the original. This statue really adds to the tranquil nature of this part of the park.

I could not see any obvious difference between then and today. Even the door looks the same. While I was there someone entered using a very large old fashioned skeleton key which makes me think it's all still original. There are now railings and window boxes whereas before it was just the wall. The pavement is a lot wider and there are now bollards in place. Very little change overall.

Lots of change here. The lamp looks the same and that's about it. The lamp holder looks shorter. The door has moved and the windows are fewer in number. The most obvious difference is the narrow pavement, the new building opposite, and the missing or obscured church across in Fleet Street. The Pret a Manger nicely dates it to the 21st century.
