About Wild Wairarapa
Photographs of the Wairarapa, focusing on the natural world. Photographs from this group will be considered for selection in an upcoming book called 'Wild Wairarapa, a natural wilderness', to be published in 2012.
Instructions: Please submit any and as many photographs of the Wairarapa region as you please. However, note the following guidelines:
Be creative and original. Each photograph should be characteristically ‘wild’ – whether it be in movement, colour or subject. Avoid civilisation’s interference where possible – focus on the natural world. Photographers should experiment with slower shutter speeds and aperture/depth of field, trying unusual perspectives but generally keeping with basic rules of composition. Be aware of the foreground and background. Experiment with macro lenses and extreme close-ups of micro-flora and fauna. Capture images of birds and animals, but don’t ignore the subtle shapes and colours of moss, lichen and small insects. Place emphasis morning light and the moments before night claims day – on early morning frosts and approaching storms at dusk. Include baked and bare hills in summer, howling winds, gentle streams, snow-clad peaks, high seas, lonely trees, crumbling rock-faces, morning due and fog. Explore themes of desolation, wide open spaces, dense bush and active geology. Ensure each photo uses light and dark, time and space, shape and colour, rhythm and expression to good effect.
The book will include over 100 photographs selected from this group and elsewhere.
