About LABELS
LABELS : Flickr’s new ‘Post on your Identity’ group.
A friend of mine when confronted with the ethnic genocide in Baroda, Gujarat said that situations like these force you to adopt certain positions of your identity (Hindu, Muslim) that you may have not dealt with or wish to undermine.
Do you think about your identity, as woman, man, and whatever else it is that society labels you in order to recognize, categorize and place you?
In this group you are invited to share photos about your identity, in ways that play with any aspect of your identity.
By identity I mean assumed, choice less already existing identities (such as nationality, colour, race, gender, ethnic and religious), identities that you may have taken on such as internet identities or professional identities, and identities of fantasy you aspire to make for yourself.
I think clothing oneself plays a large part in performing ones identity and has a lot to do with who you are. You are encouraged in this group to use clothes and external accessories to play around with or inhabit a certain part of your identity.
This group is a part of a participatory project called Labels in which performance and clothing design will be used to create for people ways of coming out with and celebrating their identities.
This project is not about laying out one's identity as their primary life concern. Its also about celebrating multiple idenities and being comfortable with them.
Chosen photos will be displayed on the project blog, www.whosebody.wordpress.com.
You are also welcome to take part in this project physically if you live in Gujarat, or Bombay or Bangalore in India.
The project involves garment design and production for the people who are willing to work with me in more involved ways than this this group pool.
The clothes I make will then be worn and performed by the participants in spaces of their choice. These performances will be photographed or videotaped and shown to public audiences or chosen audiences depending on the performer’s comfort.
