Lost 1.25 - the finale! (predictions and reactions)
|
There are still a few hours before tonight's two-hour finale, and I'm looking forward to it. I'm curious to get everyone's reaction, but beforehand, I thought it might be interesting to hear people's predictions, speculations, desires, fears, or other thoughts. How do you hope the season winds up? (Once the episode has aired on the east coast, I think people can post their reactions, so if you haven't seen it and don't want to be spoiled, keep off this thread.)

A few things I hope we get answers to:
-Who are the others? How did they get there, and how many are there?
- I'm hoping they open the hatch and at least some of its mystery is revealed
– I hope we get a sense of what's happening to the raft folk, even though I fully expect their fate to be left as a cliff-hanger
- More about Claire's baby and why it's so important
- a few more answers about the numbers, and about why everyone was brought to the island
- At least a glimpse of the beast
- some more background about the frenchwoman, and whether she's good or evil
I don't hope or expect all the mysteries to be answered, by any stretch, but I do hope for at least a few mysteries to be answered and for some much more solid information about the big questions - the island, the beast, the others - than we've gotten so far.
As for predictions, I really have no clue, but here are a few:
- I'm guessing the Frenchwoman isn't being totally up front with everyone. I'm sure she lied about where she got the scratches (perhaps she is "infected," whatever that means?) and i'm thinking she might have designs on Claire's baby.
– I'm guessing at least some of the other passengers from the flight are on the island. That would explain why they were focusing on Michelle Rodriguez's character last week - i can't imagine a reason for that flashback, unless she's going to turn up, somewhere, on the island. (and it could also clear up the mystery of just what Boone heard on the radio, and if, in fact, the voice said "no, WE're the survivors of flight 815").
- I'm guessing they'll get the hatch opened, but we won't see what's inside (which would be kind of lame, i have to say)
- I'm wondering (hoping?) if maybe they'll kill off Artzt (or however you spell it). His character seems so useless and uninteresting, but they've been giving him a lot more lines to say lately. The only reason i can think of is so we know him before they kill him. (the other alternative - that he'd become a regular cast member - isn't particularly appealing...)
- I'm guessing Locke might finally come clean about what he saw when he saw the beast. (maybe that's more a hope than a prediction). I'm also going to guess that he's good after all.
That's about it for me. Honestly, i have no clue what to expect. I really hope the episode isn't a disappointment, but for now at least, i"m looking forward to it!

Here are my predictions:
In tonight's episode, Jack and Sawyer finally make out (there are tiny bottles of booze involved), Kate actually shows more than one expression, and the hatch opens, revealing every sock you've ever lost while doing laundry. So that's where they went. Hey, there's my argyle!
Oh - also, everybody dies.

I enjoyed it but the characters have all become too likeable and nice. I guess when that happens you need to introduce an outside threat. I'm wondering if this whole hatch thing has a point. Series like this make you really wonder if there is a plan or if it's all in the anticipation.

I really enjoyed it! Cracked myself up when the annoying science teacher guy was, well, being annoying I commented to my family that "I hope he blows up". And a few minutes later he did! I saw that coming the second he started lecturing about the dynamite. Also, I was right about Danielle taking the baby but I was wrong about why. I was worried the whole time that it was a trap for the rest of the people back at the camp with both Sayid and Charlie gone and Jack, Locke, Kate and Hurley too. I only became suspicious that something was truly wrong was when they shot of the signal on the raft. I thought it was odd that there weren't any lights from the boat and when I saw it was a small boat I knew it was the others. At first, I just thought they were there to force them all back to the Island but when they said they were taking "the boy" is when it got really creepy. Poor Walt!! And what will happen to Michael, Jin and Sawyer?!! Well, I predict they'll be fine and that there will be enough of a raft for them to try and make their way back to the island but it will take a few weeks after the new season begins and we won't see anything of them until they show up some night - arriving in the dark like Claire did so you think it's something else and Surprise, it's the three guys! And I loved the reveal of the hatch! Just a long way down with a broken ladder!!
And I loved, loved, loved Hurley's flashback! And I hope Charlie didn't take the drugs for himself to take but only took them to give to Jack for medicine or because he wanted a Virgin Mary statue (my daughter pointed out that Charlie had been religious before his drug problems).

I really enjoyed it too, Fflan. I enjoyed it even though we still don't know very much! But there were startling developments. Finally, we know that The Others are real. And that they created a diversion with that black smoke. But how did they know that Walt was going off on the raft? Were they spying on our people? Must have been. Very, very creepy. Actually, that whole Others scene on the water made my blood run cold. It wasn't just creepy guys on that boat, either - there was a blonde woman who threw the dynamite out at them. Shudder. Poor, poor Walt. Why do these creepy people need to steal other people's children? What is their childhood trauma?
I also loved that the hatch went nowhere. I guess there goes the "hope" that Locke was talking about. Maybe that was a sign to Locke from the Island that their favorable relationship was no more? First the scary smoke-monster almost dragged Locke down a pit. Then Locke's hopeful hatch with the alluring light ended up going nowhere. Whoops. I think Locke's off the favored list. For the first time I found myself fully siding with Jack against Locke in their science vs. faith talk. Locke sounded delusional to me. Wake up and smell the coffee, Locke!
Both Locke and Sun theorized that all of them had been brought to the Island for a purpose - that they had been selected. Locke's interpretation of this is more hopeful. Sun's is the darker one....they're all being punished. I wonder.
Must sleep on this. But before I do, thank GOD the annoying Arzt was blown up! I was about to reach into the TV and strangle him. His peevish, endless complaints and high-handedness. Either they hired an actor who was that way naturally or the guy did an amazing job of playing under-your-skin-annoying. Maybe he played it too well. I laughed when he blew up. Probably not quite the reaction the Lost producers wanted but I couldn't help myself. I was just so relieved Arzt wasn't going to become a regular.

Heh, phleb, me too! Arzt wasn't worth the powder it took to blow him up! Buh-bye, REDSHIRT!
Yeah the "Jaws Boat" people were freaky. Anyone threatens a child, they got my creep factor in spades. I'm still healing from *DEADWOOD SPOILER IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT, DON'T LOOK!*
Little William's death on Deadwood. Now THIS? What is this, kid in peril year on the telly?
Anyway, I've pretty much left LOST. They pissed me off so terribly with their cavalier treatment of the fans this year. I watched because I was hoping for some resolutions, but they just gave us more angst. If I watch next year, it will be because of pure curiosity. I no longer care who bites it or who gets home or who is a criminal. They killed my momentum, my fannish interest, and my viewership with their network jerking around.
SEE YA, LOST!

Not enough info. Its not even evident that the hatch is a deadend and if it is why the numbers? To build more suspense? I hate ploys with no payoff.
I can see Lost developing the Alias syndrome. I mean they didn't really tell us anything we didn't know.
There's other people on the island. We knew that.
Walt is special for some reason. We knew that.
Jack and Locke are going to butt heads.
I like the Artz guy, it takes talent to be that annoying. I seem to remember him playing essentially the same character on Alias or some other drama. I thought maybe he had the MacGyver gene for a second until he started waving the dynamite like a parade baton and blew himself up.

Okay, did I miss something? Did they say the people on the boat were the Others? (Luckily, I taped it, so I can go back.) That whole scene was terrifying—just kept getting worse and worse. Did Sawyer get shot?
Yeah, I both knew and was, um, relieved that Arst blew up. Hurly's line,"Um, Dude, you got some...Arst on you" killed me. Actually, most of his lines did. I was glad he saw the numbers on the hatch; I figured he would, but I couldn't think of how. And, yes, that shot looking up from the hatch was creepy.
I thought Hurly's flashback went on too long, but I loved the part when the flight attendant flirted with him, and then he hugged her. If I'm up, I guess I'll watch Good Morning America to see the scene they cut due to time; maybe I'll wish they'd cut some of Hurly's airport run for it.
Loved when Locke's expression turned from eagerness to fear when facing Lostzilla—he did that great. And I don't think that hatch is going to be very useful tonight, somehow. Not that they'll even need it. Maybe. Glad that Claire got her baby back (well, for now, anyway). When Danielle asked his name, I couldn't help it, I said,"Turniphead." It's as good a name as any. I could have sworn she named the baby, though.
I wondered, too, about Charlie's Virgin Mary. Of course, I figured at first that he took it with the heroin, but it did occur to me that he took it for the religious meaning. So, it's either a mislead (big surprise there), or, more likely, he'll be struggling with his addiction next season. I think he would anyway, now that he knows there's a virgin-load of heroin out there; how could he not?
I really kept hoping Kate would blow up. But I guess there was not chance of that, since Jack somehow put the dynamite in his own pack.
Whatever Arst's shortcomings, he had a great haircut. Yes, they messed it up, but it certainly hadn't grown out in the month on the island!
I felt so bad for Jin in the flashback. Poor guy. Also, hadn't Michael given him back the watch when he axed the handcuffs? Should have been keeping all the taped ones. Oh, well.
Later!

Hmm. I guess I liked the finale, even though it didn't answer as many questions as I was hoping it would. Enough happened, and there was enough tension, that it's still keeping me on board till next year (though i do wish that at least one of the big mysteries – who are the others, what's in the hatch, what is the monster, why do the numbers have their power, etc - had been answered).
I was sure Arst was a goner, and I *loved* Hurley's "you got some.... Arst on you" line. Kind of too bad that producers had to make him SO annoying, so that everyone cheered when he blew up instead of feeling at least a teeny bit of remorse, or at least a sense of danger. I kept hoping to my boyfriend that Kate would bite it too, but we both knew that wasn't going to happen.
I didn't see the abduction of Walt coming at all – poor kid! Too bad he couldn't use any of his telekinesis to stop it. I guess Rousseau foreshadowed it - didn't she say something about "they said they were coming for the boy"?
Gaudior, i definitley assumed the people in the boat were The Others. I don't think that was stated specifically, but it was implied. Who else would be out there, looking for them, and wanting to kidnap the boy? I wondered if the blond woman on the boat might have been Alex. (and whether it's even occurred to Rousseau that she might not be able to get Alex back any more - she'd be a 16 year-old now, raised by others, with her own mind, who probably has no interest in returning to her mother).
As for the hatch - I guess i'm at least glad they didn't end the season on a shot of all of them looking in, without any sense of what they were seeing, as I feared they'd do. I found the long hatch tunnel deeply foreboding. I didn't see it as going to nowhere at all, Phleb. More that it's now even more strange and mysterious, since it seems to go down so deep. I'm sure a big piece of next year will involve searching for what's down there. Not so useful for hiding in, of course, but I guess they don't need to now that the others aren't coming for them after all.
(Hiding there never struck me as that sound a plan anyhow - i mean, they didn't know what was in there, and once they'd blown the top off, wouldn't the others be able to get in as well? It certainly wasn't a good enough plan to merit carrying 6 sticks of highly combustive dynamite, that had killed one guy who did nothing but hold it.)
The monster was - weird. It sounded so mechanical. And i wondered if a lot of the tree-stomping, etc., was all just special effects. Especially after that weird little puff of animated smoke that happened after they dynamited it. The monster DID eat the pilot, right? how come it now seems so elusive? It'll seem like it's RIGHT there, but no one sees it. More than ever, it does seem like some sort of "security system" that was built, and is mechanical, but that raises even more questions.
And Jack/Locke? We're defintiely headed for a science v. faith showdown next season. (I wish they hadn't spelled it out quite so blatantly in Locke's speech. Just as i also wish he'd stop saying dumb things that are supposed to sound deep but aren't, like "you do too. You just don't know it yet."
It'll be interesting to see more conflict among the survivors. Up till now - the first 40 days on the island - it makes sense they've mostly banded together to try and survive. But at some point i'd expect them to get into more Lord of the Flies territory.
Oh and Hurley? loved him in this episode. All the "dude!"s, the Arst comment, reading the polar bear comic, and that flashback. It was perhaps a bit gratuitous but I still enjoyed it (and fun how they sprinkled his lucky/unlucky numbers all over the place in his race for the plane).
So, I can wait for september, no problem. This didn't leave me dying with anticipation. But I did enjoy it, and I'm looking forward to seeing how some of these things get resolved, and the fate of Walt and the raftees in particular. I'm sure they'll all (or at least 2 out of 3) make it, probably hanging onto wood and drifting back to the island, but it'll still be interesting to see how. I wonder if Rousseau will join up more with the Lost-ites next season? (She really is a nutjob). And what will happen with Charlie's heroin addiction (OK, I know Sayid didn't know about the addiction, but probably still not the smartest plan to randomly tell anyone that there's a plane full of heroin in the woods). I don't buy that he took the virgin mary as a religious ornament. And, of course, i wonder what they find down that hatch.
Thanks for all the thoughts/responses everyone! it's been fun reading them after every episode.

Oh, and Phleb - i also liked the twin fate suggestions (hope/punishment) from Sun and Locke. I guess it's a natural human instinct to ask questions like "why is this happening to me?" when something terrible happens, as Sun was doing. But it does sometimes make me wonder if *everyone* on this island (except Jack of course) is obsessed with fate and destiny. There's so much talk of it. So much dialogue like "this wasn't supposed to happen," "this wasn't part of the plan," "we were all brought here for a reason," etc. And again, I didn't think we needed it spelled out quite so baldly ("You're a man of science, Jack, and I'm a man of faith") as Locke did. It was already laid out that way.

What a ride! Throughout the “previously on Lost”, I couldn’t help thinking how long ago the plane crash seemed and how in the dark the audience was about the characters back then. I think we’re still pretty much in the dark about what the heck is going on, and now there are even more unanswered questions, but I guess it’s just the way they want to tell the story. I’m glad it’s not all about instant gratification and crowd pleasing (okay, Arzt going ‘kaboom’ was a crowd pleaser!) even though I’ve had my share of frustrations. I hope any future flashbacks will be of the ‘multi-character, short-burst kind’ because you get the idea without it dragging down the momentum.
My memory is faulty concerning Danielle’s time on the island, but are the child snatchers on the boat the other members of Danielles’ team? I also mean that as 'Other' members.I know she said they had gotten the sickness but I still think it was a mental sickness. Even if they were all dead, they might not have stayed that way.
I have mixed feelings about Hurley’s flashback. Things started out with the audience’s sympathy about how difficult travel must be for a man of his size and as he bought the scooter from the old man with the hip replacement and perspired more and more, it felt like it was going on too long. We know he’s large. They even had Arzt add to his personal obnoxiousness by pointing that out to him earlier in the episode. It bothers me that they keep using it to define the character.
I almost felt sorry for Shannon when she was trying to drag her luggage and hold on to Vincent as you could tell she was feeling overwhelmed. And they Sayid had to come and spoil it. Let her take care of herself for a while!
And the monster security system is… an underground mine fire? Was the black puff of smoke that tried to drag Locke into the hellmouth –jungle pit, excuse me--the manifestation of whatever it is or is that what it leaves behind like squid ink? I don’t trust Locke anymore now that he’s pissed off the island. I do think the look of fear on his face (especially when you compare it to his look of wonder the first time he saw it) was a great ‘Oh, no! Oh, crap!’ moment and him asking doctor Jack if he had ever played the game operation and then going “bzzzz” when they were handling the dynamite was funny and kinda sick.
Down the hatch, people, like Alice in Wonderland.

"Was the black puff of smoke that tried to drag Locke into the hellmouth –jungle pit, excuse me--the manifestation of whatever it is..."
LOL! That cracked me up, Bloodflowers, especially since that scene kept making me think of that awful hellmouth monster that emerged when Buffy died, the first time, in "Prophecy Girl." Something about the tentacles trying to drag him down the hole...
And yeah, i also liked his look of total fear this time - compared to the rapture we saw on his face the first time he saw it.

Oh yes, two more things I wanted to mention. That clanky chain noise when Locke was being "reeled in"...big hint. And did anyone else see those wraith-like things before the puff of cgi smoke? Jack said "I saw it too" in response to Locke's look. Reminded me of the things that hit the engine, making it explode, when they first crashed on the island.

Oh, a couple more thoughts, and then i really have to get to work. I'm curious if the slaves from the ship have anything to do with the others. While there were a few skeletons, they made sure to show a few empty shackles as well.
Also, mines were mentioned somewhere in there. That, along with all the underground stuff - the thing reeling Locke in (and yes, it definitely seemed clanky, WIllowy), the hatch going down forever - made me wonder if mines will figure into this in some way.
I did notice the wraith-like things when they were walking through the woods, though I don't remember things hitting the engine when they first crashed. I'll have to re-watch the pilot whenever it airs again. It was interesting to me how odd and unreal and mechanical everything having to do with the security system/monster was. It either sounded kind of clanky, or it had a CGI appearance that was so animated it looked like it wasn't *supposed* to look real. Everything seemed manufactured.

Wow, Willowy - good catch! That's got to mean something for sure.
Y'know, I'm with you, sTalking_Goat. Last night kind of left me frustrated. I started watching the clock and thinking, "Oh, great - still not going to be a payoff of any sort to tide me over the summer." I figured it was Walt "they" wanted after all...what ever prevented them from snagging him during his whole time on the island?
And why would Jack, being a doctor and all, (arguably one of the people I'd most want to keep alive if I were stranded in a fledgling society on a tropical island), be so damned insistent about carrying the already proven to be deadly dy-no-mite? Oh yeah, it's a television show.
Grumpiness over - I'll still be watching to see what happens in the fall, but I'm still feeling a little "scammed" by last night.
BTW, woo hoo to all of us going to see the BDM tonight!!

I also wondered if the woman/girl on the boat was Danielle's daughter. We didn't get a good enough look at her (which I'm guessing was deliberate) to judge her age. And the men all seemed to have beards, at least the one guy who was talking, so again hard to judge their ages.
I also loved the Hurley comment about "you have some Arnst on you". Cracked me up! I was really worried about Hurley when he started running trying to put out the lit dynamite! I thought he was going to be a goner. And yeah, was also hoping Kate would blow-up. And did know one think to argue with Jack that the biggest reason he shouldn't carry the dynamite is because he is the only doctor they have and the only known person with a blood type that could be transferred others (not The Others but his island mates). I loved Anst complaining about the "in" group. I thought that was kind of funny because I was thinking that it was at least a bit odd that we do hardly see any of them interacting with anyone else on the island.
Acp, I also wondered about the empty shackles and wondered if they were the people who became the Others. Did anyone else think that ship looked to be in excellent condition? And what didn't make sense about that is that it was so intact. Wouldn't any survivors who were aware of it have long ago taken much of it and what's on it to use to build things?
One reason that I do think Charlie may have not only taken the heroin but used it was he was having an extremely hard time keeping up with Sayid to the point were Sayid said they were going to have to rest soon because Charlie was going to collapse. They then come across the heroin and the next thing you know, Charlie is able to keep up with no problems at all. They then come across Danielle, Sayid has already explained why he thinks Danielle did this and she confirms it with her words and Charlie is still extremely cold towards her and calling her all kinds of names, "deranged" and "sick" come to mind. He doesn't show any compassion for this poor woman who had her own infant snatched from her days after it's birth. To me, that seemed to be out of character for Charlie and the only explanation, to me, is that he was high on heroin.
I thought the smoke screen of making us think the Others was coming to take the baby and not Walt was done fantastically. Danielle shows up, takes a look at Claire and the baby and then proceeds to tell a story about how she had given birth to her own child, then she saw the smoke and they came and took her child. She does then mention having heard them say they were coming for "the boy". Because of her initial story and the fact that Claire just gave birth it was normal for us all to think "the boy" referred to the newborn baby boy. If she had just come and said she heard them say they were coming for "the boy" and then told her story, our first thoughts would've been on Walt and then we may have thought she was talkinga bout the baby after but still, that thought that it could be Walt they meant would've been in our heads. So I think the way they did it was brilliant because they set it up so that it never crossed our minds that it would be Walt who was taken.
As for them knowing where Walt was. Yeah, I'm sure they were watching the group. They saw Walt's father being the one in charge of building the raft. They probably even saw Walt light the first one on fire so they may not have been sure if they would even succeed in getting off the island. Walt must have had a preminition of what was going to happen if they stayed on the island - remember, his father tells Walt they can stay and Walt insists that they go - maybe he saw in his mind what happened to Danielle's group when they took the baby - this would make sense when he first saw Danielle he seemed more than scared of her. So, yeah, I'm sure the initial plan of the Others was to go and massacre the survivors while they grabbed Walt. They didn't have to do that so I think the rest of the survivors are safe (for now) because the Others grabbed Walt and think that they killed the three men who won't be able to tell the rest of the people what happened. Of course, once they (or at least one of them survive) get back to the island and tell them what happened there will be a search.
I hope they all survive. I'd hate for Michael to die just because he and Walt had been seperated so long. And Jin, poor Jin, has had so many bad things happen to him and I love him and Sun together. And Sawyer, I like the growth we've seen from his character and would love to see where they are going with him. Yes, I do think he was shot because it was the impact of that which sent him flying off the raft.
That's where I thought they messed up though. They realize that something is up with these people in the boat. I know Jin can't speak English but I'm sure he sensed that these people were being threatening. They shoot Sawyer and Jin jumps off the raft to go and help him, and leaves Michael and a child alone to defend themselves. I just thought that was a bit odd and made no sense. I liked that Jin wanted to save Sawyer but they were under attack.

Yes, it bugged me about the doctor carrying the dynamite too – jack's "I must sacrfice myself and be the lonely hero"; attitude often bugs me, and in this case, i thought someone should have pointed out that it would be better for the group as a whole that he not die, and let that factor into the decision of who carries it.
But frankly, as i said before, that whole twisted logic of the brief scene where they debated taking the dynamite bugged me (Total paraphrase here): Jack: "Maybe we shouldn't take this dynamite that is clearly unstable and just blew up annoying science guy just because he picked it up."
Locke: "Oh, but we have to. it's our only hope of survival. The fact that this plan isn't well thought out, actually seems rather convoluted and unlikely to succeed, and we could probably think of a half-dozen far better plans if we thought about it, shoudln't dissuade us at all."
Jack and others: "Oh OK, you're right."
I hate it when shows aren't at all logical!

I also thought that logic made no sense at all. I thought when the guy blew up that they were going to decide it was just too risky - but they end up taking six sticks of dynamite. And why did they have to carry it on their backs? Couldn't they have rigged up a long stick, put all the dynamite in one back pack and secure it in the middle of the stick with one person on each end carrying it? They all were sitting pretty near the guy who blew up so it didn't seem like they'd need an extremely long stick.

I rewatched the Walt kidnap scene (taped). Granted, the picture wasn't too clear (and it was dark), but no one looked familiar. I slowed it down when the woman through whatever blew up the raft, and she certainly didn't look 16.
Maybe they need Walt since he's closer in age to Alex than is Turniphead, uh, Aaron, to reproduce with her (Alex, that is; rather unclear sentence).

For some reason I've been assuming Alex was a girl, but now I can't remember why - maybe the French woman referred to her once using a feminine pronoun, or maybe I just totally leaped to conclusions with no basis. Does anyone else remember if there's been a reference to Alex's sex? It's certainly a unisex name....

esg & apc, I believe Alex's gender (female) was revealed in the previous episode when Danielle talked about her baby being abducted.
Did Locke's speculation that what was beneath the hatch was "hope" remind anyone else of the myth of Pandora's Box? After Pandora opened the box and released all the evils therein the only thing that remained in the box was hope. I don't know if that's significant or not to the show. It could mean that opening the hatch was a bad thing (as Walt and Hurly seemed to think) or a good thing, since the bad stuff is already out.
I'm also interested in the relationship between The Numbers and the castaways' backstories after Kate's revelation/reminder that the farmer betrayed here for $23,000. Does anyone remember the numbers coming up in any other flashbacks? I was too busy watching the show to recall any numbers. I guess I'll have to wait for the DVDs.
I did a little research on-line, and the invention of dynamite didn't occur until 1866, (just) after slavery was abolished in the US. My understanding is that the US was one of the last major western nations to abolish slavery, although that doesn't mean it didn't (doesn't) continue some places. The juxtaposition of slavery and dynamite seems odd to me, but, to paraphase Danielle, "What show am I watching?"

I guess I took the reference to slaves loosely – a more likely explanation, given the place, might be British convicts going to Australia. Also, although i think they made it clear the dynamite was older than 16 years, when Danielle came to the island, it doesn't necessarily mean it was brought on the ship. Slave trade aside, that ship looked like it predated 1866. Also odd that the boxes had the word "explosives" (or something like that) painted (spray-painted?) on them. It somehow seemed incongruous with the ship setting. But i don't think there's any reason the dynamite couldn't have come wtih someone else - perhaps travelers have been getting shipwrecked/marooned on this island for centuries...

I think they led us to think that Alex must be a boy, but when Alex was first mentioned, Danielle said Alex was "my child." And she did say "they took her" in last week's explanation.
Somehow, I was thinking that the plume of black smoke would be from the same area it was when Danielle saw it last, thus 5 km inland. So I was surprised that it was coming from the beach; wonder if Danielle was, too.
Anyone notice all the great sea and rock shots they've had in these two episodes? Guess they're packing it in in case they don't film on location as much next year.
BTW, TV Guide, in an interview with JJ Abrams, said that Boone really hears "We're the survivors of Flight 815"—but we don't know if his own message bounced back to him or if someone else said it (which seems like an odd thing to reply. "No, we are." "Nuh, uh. We are." Okay, devolving quickly here. Must be the 93 degree heat.

Back when Danielle was first introduced she referred to Alex as "her child" and never said the sex of the baby. A lot of people assumed it was a boy but some pointed out it could be a girl. Last week, she does clearly say it's a girl when she's telling what happened to her baby. Gaudior, what you say makes sense about them needing Walt as a potential mate for the 16 year old girl. Not because the Others can't mate with her but their bloodline has probably already been mixed too many times if they are supposed to have been on the island for many, many years. Native American tribes (and probably tribes of people all over the world) had rules about not being able to mate with someone from the tribe because the bloodlines could be too close. Some tribes mixed with people from other tribes or kidnapped females & males from other tribes so the kidnapping of Walt for that reason would make a lot of sense. Doesn't mean that they don't won't Claire's baby. They could be waiting until he's older and doesn't need to be breast fed.
Acp, I also thought the word "Explosives" on the box seemed to modern looking and unneccessary. Would they have marked a box like that if the crate is supposed to be pretty old?
And yeah, it could've been prisoners in those shackles and not slaves. Slaving boats didn't have people chained up like that.

FF, interesting thinking about bloodlines and such—way beyond mine (despite being an Anthro. major in college).
I've been reading some of the TWoP forum postings (they were up to 40 pages when I last checked). A lot of people hated the episode and felt very cheated and don't plan to watch next year. Most felt that it should have ended with the kidnapping scene and not the hatch scene, with which I agree (I think).
I didn't feel the need to see what was down the hatch (at least not at present!). It was enough that it was a deep, narrow chute with a broken ladder. In any case, no one was going to be able to see much at night with torches and a weeny flashlight.
I think ESG is right: "the hatch opens, revealing every sock you've ever lost while doing laundry. So that's where they went. Hey, there's my argyle!" Hee.

All I could think when I saw the Othere was "OMG THEY ARE DEMON PIRATES." lol. The ship and everything, it all ties together in my mind.
I mean they had a zombie apocalypse on Alias, J.J. can do anything.
Honestly though, I really liked this finale. Lots of great character moments, good rising tension, a few nice reveals (although not many) I liked the monster scene etc.
I guess some people are going to be dissapointed that there weren't any real answers, but this is Lost, I really don't expect to ever get any. So yah, I'm good with the mystery as long as the story keeps me interested, and it has thus far.

The men on the boat were to me, obviously decendents of pirates that have been drawn to and trapped on the island for decades, possibly centuries.
Perhaps they want the children since they can't reproduce and make more men - they get them while they are young and train them to follow their ways.
They also might be responsible for the plane crash, shooting down everything in grasp to loot for their own?
The only thing I can't explain is the opening of the hatch - it must be tied to the very cause why everything is attracted to the island in the first place - yet all we get is more guesses, such a tease.
Ignore the slave/prisoner ship as a distraction for other explanations, it's only meant to show us just how far back the island has been attacting things - perhaps the hatch is there to study this effect in safety. It would have to be a post world-war one creation, so it's no older than that.
As far as the magic numbers being elsewhere (4 8 15 16 23 42) I am sure everyone saw gate 23, flight number 815. The others are seat numbers? The six soccer players Hurley goes past have the magic numbers on their shirts!
here's Latitude: 4.815 Longitude: 162.342
here's all the numbers in the series so far
Was I the last to know there is a series of fake websites tied the show around the net? Check this out:

Arzt means doctor in German - does that mean anything to anyone or is it just nothing?

Well, they kept referring to him as Dr. Arzt. I suppose he may have had a Ph.D., but I doubt it's required to teach high school science (biology, wasn't it?). Or maybe it was the writers' little play on words.
