About Prisoners of War - Sennelager
The images featured in this Group are taken from a collection of approximately 200 postcard photographs of First World War prisoners of war during their captivity at Sennelager camp, Westphalia, Germany. The postcards date from circa 1915 to 1917 and show individuals and groups from various regiments and countries.
The collection was in the possession of former Sergeant Harvey James Jeffery ("Jeff") who was wounded and taken prisoner at Le Cateau on 26th August 1914 while serving with 1st Battalion, Hampshire Regiment. After more than three years as a prisoner of war, the majority of which was spent at Sennelager, Jeff was repatriated via the Netherlands in January 1918. He was subsequently awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his service in helping other prisoners whilst in captivity.
Jeff went on to see 42 years' continous service in the (Royal) Hampshire Regiment which carried him from the rank of Private to Major. As well as the Great War he saw active service on the North-West Frontier in 1932, in the Palestine Rebellion (1936-37), and in the Second World War. He had service in Bermuda, South Africa, Mauritius, Turkey, Palestine, Asia Minor, Egypt, India and Waziristan.
The images are posted here by the Dorset & South Wiltshire Branch of the Western Front Association with the kind permission of the Royal Hampshire Regiment Museum who hold this collection in their archive.
