About US Westward Movement: People and Places
One of the great adventures in US History, the westward movement was a constant from the day the first English colonist arrived until the whole continent had been occupied and settled.
The Westward Movement had many heroes -- and also many sad consequences. We (the US) believed it was our "Manifest Destiny" to settle and "civilize" the whole continent, and if you were in the way, whether you were a Mexican, a Native American, or a buffalo, you were going to make way for us.
This is the place for anything about the US westward movement: the people (Davy Crockett, Andrew Jackson, Lewis & Clark, John C. Fremont, Sitting Bull, Red Cloud), places (the Alamo, Chimney Rock, Independence Rock, Ft. Laramie, Promontory Summit), trails (Oregon Trail, Santa Fe Trail), canals, etc., involved with the movement west. Obviously, the western movement included both the people moving west as well as the people, places, animals, barriers they encountered/collided with on the trip, so photos of the Native American and Mexican people/places, the natural obstacles, etc. are appropriate as well.
