About West Philly Hybrid X Team

The West Philly Hybrid X Team, headquartered at West Philadelphia High School’s Academy of Automotive and Mechanical Engineering is a team of students and teachers that has built and competed with alternative fuel vehicles for the since 1998, winning recognition and admiration across the country. We are the only high school team of the 43 competitors in the Progressive Insurance Automotive X Prize, competing for a share of the $10M purse.

Here’s what the team said in their application to the X Prize Foundation:

"The next generation stands to inherit the environmental and social disaster we are creating by our unrelenting hunger for oil. Our entry in the X Prize competition will enable young people to address the most serious issue facing our world not only by designing a fuel efficient car, but by engaging their peers and their community in the fight for our future."


The Mission of the Hybrid X Team is to design and build a vehicle that will utilize existing technology in innovative ways to achieve ultra-low carbon emissions and ultra-high fuel efficiency. Unlike many alternative fuel vehicles, we will achieve these goals without sacrificing drivability, safety and style.
