advice needed re replacing sony camera

view profile

annadunford says:

Okay as some of you know already my 1st digital camera ended up in half an inch of saltwater too much and is now being recycled somewhere. I'm currently (rather paranoidly) borrowing a camera and need to get a replacement before christmas as it's wanted back!

So with several hundred mb of sony memory stick kicking about I figured another cybershot or similar would make sense given that money is decidedly an object and it makes sense to be able to use what I have!

However being out in the sticks I can't wander in someplace and have a looksee and play, I'm no camera junkie and basically have always used what I've been given so have no idea where to even start looking for advice and in anycase my questions are things like 'will it fit in my pocket?', 'how heavy is it?' and 'is it easy to learn to use?' rather than techie stuff =)

I'd like a reasonable zoom but other than that I'm not really that fussy... altho an easy to see screen would be a bonus I tend to use the viewfinder.

I figured that as many of you (a) know far more about camers than I do (not difficult though!) (b) are familiar with the kind of images I take and most importantly (c) are lovely people not on the hard sell here was as good a place to ask as any =)

So what sort of Sony model numbers should I be looking out for? Come to that does anyone have one they want to sell? (if so Flickrmail me rather than this ending up like a branch of TradeMe!)

Soo... ummm...

You know, you can probably buy a 1GB memory stick of most sorts for about $30 now, so you might be best to look more broadly than the Sony gear. You could save more than that by avoiding the Sony brand name.

+1, Jim.

Anna, I had a good run out of the Canon G5. It might be a little old-tech now, you should be able to pick up a used one for around $200 these days if you are going the used route?

Ultimately it's a matter of bridging the gulf between your wallett and your requirements. Your skills are certainly up to a camera that allows you a good deal of control. Whatevery you buy, it's got to handle well in your hands.

I agree with Richard. My first camera was the Canon Powershot G2, and it was a great camera. I still use it. I think the G5 is the latest version of it.

Although it wasn't an SLR, it allowed me to use manual settings if I wanted, and it took great shots.

It gets the big thumbs up from me.

The G9 is the latest version, and is very whizz-bang with a return to the RAW capability. since the G5 there has been the G6 (not entirely successful), and the G7 (slated for lack of RAW).

thanks for the help guys. I think the Kodak place in town just has Kodak, Olympus and Practika but I guess I can look online too.

By the way Richard what's RAW?! I don't do techie remember nor geek-speek =) SLR I understand, although one won't fit in my pocket...

RAW is the native format in which a digital camera stores all the image information. It usually processes this information into a JPG or TIFF.

Here's another definition:
"The RAW file format is digital photography's equivalent of a negative in film photography: it contains untouched, "raw" pixel information straight from the digital camera's sensor."
www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/RAW-file-format.htm

Shooting in RAW gives you most control over an image... you can do things with a RAW image that you are unable to do with JPG or even a TIFF, such as compensate for under or over-exposure.

Once you shoot in RAW, you never really go back :)

Hey Anna,
The Olympus waterproof series are getting pretty good reviews - and this way, they wont be ruined the next time you drop your camera in water!!!

now you're talking =) That dratted dog has a lot to answer for....

However unless I start borrowing this computer to upload as well it may take me a while to get anything up now as my laptop has just given me the blue screen of death.... I can go off technology sometimes, I really can.

Deep breath, count to ten and wait to see if the boss thinks the college techie bloke can have a look at it for me before I scream....
