Eclipse Viewing Meetup?

view profile

-Nicole-  Pro User  says:

Since Anna's plans have changed and she's not going to be in Wellington the Tuesday of the Eclipse I thought I'd start another thread to see if anyone else was keen for a meetup to try to photograph the eclipse.

And if nobody is keen, do you know of a good place where I can go watch it? It's really hard to see the moon from my place. :-p

EDIT: This is the official meetup information

18:30-19:00 Meet at Espressoholics
19:00 Travel to Te Raekaihau Point and meet up with anyone who is joining us there
19:53-01:21 Lunar Eclipse is taking place

Someone else suggested to me that Red Rocks might be better, given that it's darker down there. Anyone know the likely direction? I'm an idiot with these things.

I suggested Te Raekaihau/Princess Bay. A little more remote from the lighting of housing etc. One can move out onto the point to keep the moon clear of the hill behind (might have to check that a night or two before)

-Nicole-  Pro User  says:

Te Raekaihau/Princess Bay sounds good to me :-) Not that I'm 100% sure how to get there, but I'm sure that I can figure it out in the next week and a half ;-)

Times for the eclipse are supposed to be (so we can plan what time to meet):

19:53:39 28 AUG Penumbral Eclipse begins
20:51:16 28 AUG Partial Eclipse begins
21:52:22 28 AUG Total Eclipse begins
22:37:22 28 AUG Greatest Eclipse
23:22:24 28 AUG Total Eclipse ends
00:23:30 29 AUG Partial Eclipse ends
01:21:01 29 AUG Penumbral Eclipse ends

I think that necessary gear will include the tripod and a warm blanket... and if ellipse is bringing the marshmallows, I'll bring the chocolate... now who's gonna bring the biscuits? ;-)

And who is going to bring the gear to start the fire to toast the marshies? Are there good stores of wood around there??? I'd definitely be interested - should be interesting to play with my new-ish digital and see what I can get from my film camera with the black & White film in it...

anakiwa_forever (on holiday, back eventually!)  Pro User  says:

The only issue I can see with Princess Bay is that theres a good chance of getting aircraft flying through in the early stages of the eclipse, and you will still get city lights...

The 28th is a full moon, and when we are in standard time, moonrise is at sunset and moonset is at or about dawn. That means there is a good chance that the best part of the eclipse will be behind the hills to the north from Princess Bay at midnight???

Someone who lives in that area and knows should correct me if I am wrong...

TELPortfolio  Pro User  says:

See the times above

I checked both Te Raekaihau and The Quarry last night.

It is less likely that the moon will be behind the hill at Te Raekaihau/Princess Bay than at the Owhiro Bay Quarry.

I note the times provided by Nicole. The moon itself rises about 5.30pm (Nautical Almanac www.hydro.linz.govt.nz/astro/moonrise-set-2007.pdf) and should be reasonably high around 8pm and the eclipse proper doesn't start until nearly 9pm.

But yes an aircraft could still get in the way. Added character

anakiwa_forever: Yeah, I'll leave the logistics of where we'll get the longest view of the moon to those who know better :-) I just know that by my house I only see it for a very short time.

And even if an aircraft or 2 does get in the way, I'm with TELPortfolio... added character ;-) Besides, the planes must stop at some point.

A Different Perspective: Sorry you're gonna miss it. Hope you get a good view where you are :-)

anakiwa_forever: What about suffering for your art and all that ;-)

Don't worry about being all confuzzled anyways... Practice is fun... and I figure that during the 5-ish hours that the whole thing takes I'll have to manage at least one or two good shots. And nothing wrong with diving into the deep end.

Hmmmm, speaking of how long the whole thing is, maybe I need to see if I can find a cheap laser pointer or two to play with light painting while I'm sitting around :-)

Yes, next Tuesday, the 28th of August.

Umm, I don't think we've quite settled on a time and place. Tentatively it will be Te Raekaihau/Princess Bay, but it's all still getting ironed out. And tentatively probably about 7:00-7:30 meetup so that we have time to scope a spot and set up gear before the eclipse starts.

We should probably get some of those details figured out, but...

Watch this thread for more details. I'll update the first post when times / places are confirmed.

-Nicole-  Pro User  says:

Ok, obviously now would be a good time to start talking about... well... time.

Two scenarios for time here:

1. We meet at the location. I'm thinking about 30 minutes before the whole thing is due to start. Gives everyone time to get there, get their gear set up, and all the general stuff that takes time before anything actually gets going. This would be about 19:30.

2. We all meet somewhere for a drink to warm up (at ellipse's suggestion) then head out as a group to the actual location so nobody gets lost in the dark trying to find the place. Then, I'd say maybe about 18:30. Gives people time to actually get to the meeting spot and have a drink and then gives us enough time to get to our shooting location.

Any thoughts on which scenario is preferable to most people?

Note: Suggestion 2 amended to add the suggestion of meeting a bit earlier

Moon from Te Raekaihau

This was taken tonight in the carpark at Te Raekaihau (which is the western head of Lyall Bay). The only hassle that I had was a car came into the car park and someone was testing the same as me. The other thing was that it was damn cold.

Te Raekaihau can be accessed fron the Lyall Bay Bus terminal (its about a 15 minute walk to the south). The group would need a couple of cars for warmish shelter and transport back to the city afterwards.

Ok, while everyone figures out the best route to get there...

How about meeting up at Espressoholic on Courtenay Place at 6:30... that way, people who want a bit of caffeine before we head out can get some. (Nobody suggested a meeting place yet, and this was the only one I could think of).

In case people are planning to join up with us later, where exactly (or approximately) will we be watching the eclipse from?

Espressoholic is fine with me, but since I'm new in this group, how do I know which one are you guys? :D

I did some test last night because I saw the sky is clear, but after Im finish setting up my gear, there was thin haze covering the moon, so I have to wait couple more minutes. But I manage to get some shots.

GIALIAT You rock for bringing a camping stove for marshmallows!
