Help dark reception
|
Ok I have only done a few weddings and receptions can be pretty dark. Usually can bounce flash off ceiling, walls, anything white. This reception area is black ceiling. I have a 430ex canon flash which I dont like much, and I rent a 580 canon flash which I love.
Any ideas on how I should light the scene without killing the mood?
I was thinking of renting two 580 flash, use the 430ex and sync them together.
What do you think?

The key is fast lenses - shoot the whole thing at f2 or below - which may mean you have to hire lenses.
Then you can supplement it with flash. Bad things happen when people try to shoot in the dark with cheap gear and think they can make up for it with lots of flash!

Tripod and shoot slow. Or learn your speed flash but practice first. Open the aperture as much as possible. I shoot with available light and you might surprise yourself. I also usually shoot with a ring flash unit any more. The speed lights seem to create hotspots so find a good flash that will sink with your camera. Or practice with manual setting 1/125, 1/100, 1/60 most flashes will sink to one of these shutter speeds. If your just getting hot spots try rubber banding a piece of parchment paper curved over the flash its a poor mans diffuser. Also practice what this does. If the flash is sinking fast the front half of the photo will be exposed and the back half dark. A slow sink will do the opposite.

I also think Nikon does better with people I use Cannon for nature and wide landscape.
